Multiple Process/Application Instances

I am running GNOME 3.22.2 on a recently installed Debian 9 system. When
I have a process, an xterm or emacs for example, in one workspace and
then switch to another workspace and click on the emacs or xterm icon, I
get kicked back to the first workspace. I did discover that if I do
that to an xterm a little dropdown appears at the screen top. When I
select the dropdown the menu item "new" appears among others, and when I
select it I get a new xterm instance.

Rename terminal/terminal tabs

Hey guys/gals,

I'm sure you've been asked this countless times but is there an effective
way to name terminals or terminal tabs?

I have tried added the following to . bashrc

set-title(){
ORIG=$PS1
TITLE="\e]2;$@\a"
PS1=${ORIG}${TITLE}
}

Then set title by: Kali> set-title "new terminal title"

The only issue with this is after I name a new terminal and copy and paste
a string into the terminal it behaves strangely and the text wraps around
and ultimately can't execute the function.

Thoughts?

Thanks,
Mike

logind + GDbus API

Good day, I planned to write a tiny software for testing purposes that
will use GDbus API to interact with logind, in order to detect user
idle time.
I am still studying GDbus API, and I am also looking for some very
good example of GDbus API + logind usage, in order to learn best
practices in using both of them.
Do you know any? I actually have not found anything yet that fits my
needs, but there should be some for sure.

"application not responding"

Hello group,

is there any way to disable these messages "... not responding".
It's really annoying, some applications just need time to compute. E.g.

limited if this message is shown (is that a bug? I had this issue since

Cannot start a gnome-3.28.x wayland session with elogind

Hi,

Any suggestions on how to start a gnome wayland with elogind (mutter-3.28.2 is compiled against it) would be gratefully received.

I've compiled gnome-3.28.x and can start an X11 session by calling gnome-session from startx.

I know wayland works because I can start weston like this:

$ XDG_SESSION_TYPE=wayland XDG_RUNTIME_DIR=/run/user/1001 weston-launch

..and it reports WAYLAND_DISPLAY=wayland-0

However, when I try to start a gnome wayland session like this:

$ XDG_SESSION_TYPE=wayland XDG_RUNTIME_DIR=/run/user/1001 gnome-session

..I get:

Scripting window position

Hello,

Is it possible to modify a window's position from an external program
such as a python script?

For example, I would like a script to move my current Firefox window to
the left bottom corner of the Desktop and have a size of 400x400.

I'm not sure if this is going in the right direction, but I found the
GTK library has functions to get and set window positions, but I'm not
sure how to specify the particular window instance, such as the Firefoxwindow in the example above.

Mailing lists and attachments

I'm new on GNOME mailing lists (and mailman in general) and I made a post
where I included an attachment. The attachment (a 21 kB PNG image) did not
show up in my post:
<a href="https://mail.gnome.org/archives/gtk-app-devel-list/2018-January/msg00019.html" title="https://mail.gnome.org/archives/gtk-app-devel-list/2018-January/msg00019.html">https://mail.gnome.org/archives/gtk-app-devel-list/2018-January/msg00019...</a>

Is it not possible to include small attachments? Did I do it wrong, or
should I have uploaded it to a service and included a link instead? What's
the normal procedure?

I realize this is a noob question that I should be able to find somewhere,
but I'm sorry to say that I have not been able to do so.

Thanks

Gsettings development

development with gsettings.  I am trying to change a a value in
gsettings (in this case "/org/gnome/desktop/sound/theme-name").  I am
pretty sure all I will need are the functions g_settings_get_value() and
g_settings_set_value().  I do not need to create any new keys, just
modify existing ones.  Please point me to any resources or give me any
short examples on how to do this.

How about adopting Kotlin in GNOME?

I've been thinking about what language I should choose if and when I
start writing a significant program using G* libraries. I don't want to
write GObjects in C any more. All that boilerplate, casting macros,
manual set up of vtables and explicit reference counting. I will make
mistakes with it.

C++ is an improvement, but tends to add more complexity and is still
prone to runtime bugs such as buffer overruns, and there are some quirks
in its G* bindings.

Vala is very attractive, but I'm afraid I have to side with the
doomsayers.

How to change default umask in gnome 3.22?

I login to session with GDM. I then open gedit. Documents I save all have rw-r--r--.

longer.

Where might I find the assignment of default applications?

Recent files in Nautilus not working as a FIFO structure

Hello everyone!

Nautilus file manager (currently ver. 3.22.3-1 in Debian 9 with Gnome
desktop) offers the Recent files list.

As a user who is used to the recent files feature in some popular
applications (e.g. LibreOffice, MS Office, MS Windows Explorer) I
would expect it to work as a FIFO (first in, first out) structure: the
most recently opened document goes on top of the list and pushes the
previous list members downwards.

icons appear on the desktop. They are mirrors; whatever is done with one
icon is shadowed with the other.
Is there a way to have only one icon for cameras?

Facing problems with GNOME Characters

Hello,

I'm using GNOME 3.22.2 as shipped with Debian 9. I find that the old
Character Map (gucharmap, I assume), which was the default character map
application in GNOME 2 has been replaced with a new generation JavaScript
one.

It looks cool, but doesn't show any non-English letter unless you
explicitly search for it. What was the cause for this replacement?

I didn't find anything related to the character map application on
gnome.org to file a bug, and that's why I'm using this list. Should I use
some other list?

How is it that GNOME still does not allow changing date format within a locale?

I am using the en_US locale. I need LC_CURRENCY, LC_NUMERIC, AND
LC_PAPER to be formatted per the en_US locale. But I need LC_TIME and
LC_MEASUREMENT set to international standards (e.g., en_DK). I can set
this in Debian, but the GNOME DE overrides it and prevents it within the
GNOME DE. So why does GNOME not allow the changing of formats within a
locale? Settings > Region & Language only allows changing the locale.
Different locales give different formats but do not allow using U.S.
locale with Denmark's date format (for example). Why not?

Gnome 3 advertisement

Dear Gnome3 Sirs:

First, a little history.
A couple of days ago, the gnome.org website poped up in my PC just when
it had just booted. Because of this (or maybe not, maybe it was just a
fluke) I could not surf the internet for several minutes for the first
time in years. I had to turn off the modem-router and restart it and
reboot my machine and finally, the internet connection was restored again.

I can see you are promoting Gnome3 and so I have decided to send you
this mail. I have been a loyal fan of Gnome for more than a decade.

Why are there no desktop icons with Wayland?

Hi there,

I'm coming back to Gnome following up the announced death of Unity, and had
one question that I couldn't find any answer for: why are there no desktop
icons in Gnome/Wayland? Is this a design decision, or a purely technical
decision that will get resolved in the (hopefully) near future?

Thanks,

Display switching off

Hello Gnome list,
I have a CentOS 7.3 OS with gnome 3.14.0 desktop.
Everything works perfectly, except my dualdisplay setup...
Displays work, I'm happy, but then when I don't use them for X min, they go
in suspend, and only the primary display comes back after typing/using the
mouse.
When I go to gnome settings->display I see my primary display active and my
secondary switched off. When I switch it on all works again...
How can I trigger this change on wake-up of display one?

Or maybe accomplish the same in some other way...

Thanks!

Paperwork : a personal document manager

Hello,

(sorry if it's not the correct mailing-list for this kind of discussions)

For the last few years, I've been the main developer of a program
called Paperwork ( <a href="https://openpaper.work/" title="https://openpaper.work/">https://openpaper.work/</a> ;
<a href="https://github.com/jflesch/paperwork" title="https://github.com/jflesch/paperwork">https://github.com/jflesch/paperwork</a> ).
I'm currently wondering, could Paperwork become part of the Gnome project ?

Quick presentation:
Paperwork is a personal document manager. It manages scanned documents
and PDFs. It's designed to be easy and fast to use.

Since I am interested only in Firefox, I did not install the connector

When I go to the Gnome extensions page, the following is displayed:

Gee. An "unexpected" error. The worst kind.
There is no further information. No log entries. Nothing.

Is there a fix for this?

Gnome Screenshot Aplication Feature Request

First of all I am sorry if I am emailing this to a wrong address but I
could not find any other way to get my feature request out.

Iam sure that a lot people use gnome screenshot application for making
presentations or sending instructions. I would be nice to have way of
taking multiple screenshots without having to close and reopen
application itself.

What I would like to see is an option of going back to main screenshot
screen after pressing "copy to clipboard " right now application closes
and I have to reopen it to create another screenshot.

Customize some keyboard shortcuts

Hi,

I'm having a hard time to configure the keyboard shortcuts of my new
gnome-shell 3.22 session.

I would like:

1- To bind "Emacs" to "Shift+Enter". For some reason it seemes to be
impossible to use Shift+enter for a shortcut. Is there a workaround ?

2- I used to have volume down and volume up in Ctrl+PageDown and
Ctrl+PageUp. I tried to use "amixer -q set Master 5%+ unmute" and
"amixer -q set Master 5%- unmute" for this (my config in Xfce) but both
cut the audio (while working from a terminal).

3- I am using ncmpcpp (mpd client) for music.
