Route 66 - GNOME 2x

** This isn't a rant or a rave** :)

We love progress, we love old, we love familiar, we love new. We support Free Software and the accompanying options. It's all about *free* as in liberating. I know several of us have been speaking about why GNOME 2x, which that is fine and all, but really lets be problem solvers not complainers.

So!! Why doesn't someone maintain a 2x branch?

I'm not volunteering for the job; I got my own time problems.

Fully working GTK3(+GTK2) theme for Gnome 3.8?

It seems it's a rather common problem that GTK3 themes partly break
Gnome3.8 by preventing having a nice desktop background while letting
the file manager draw the background:

<a href="https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=162204" title="https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=162204">https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=162204</a>

I've so far found only two GTK3 themes that work in this respect,
the default theme Adwaita that ships with Gnome3.8 and Nokto3.8
(<a href="http://gnome-look.org/content/show.php?content=158033" title="http://gnome-look.org/content/show.php?content=158033">http://gnome-look.org/content/show.php?content=158033</a>). I'm not
particularly pleased with the aesthetics of either of them though.

What's causing this behaviour in themes?

gnome3, yet another negative feedback

Hello all,

(yet another negative feedback, probably among thousands of others on the net, and hence, may not be worth reading by developers, but I still hope my voice gets counted somehow)

I wish Gnome3 would use "classic" computer hardware, like keyboard and mouse with 3 buttons (and a wheel) -- *fully* exploiting these classic hardware controls (I won't explain, probably everybody who tried Gnome3, understands what I mean).

# FrOSCon 2013 Call for Projects #

We would like to invite you to take part in the eights Free and Open Source Software Conference (FrOSCon 2013).

FrOSCon is a two-day conference on Free Software and Open Source, which takes place on August 24th/25th, 2013 at the University of Applied Sciences Bonn-Rhein-Sieg, in St. Augustin near Bonn, Germany.

Main part of the conference is a comprehensive range of talks and workshops.

The bunch of examples

I will keep this short! Not. I tried but failed! So please pick what
you are interested in. And don't take it personal. I can only apologize
for my own unfair and unpolite behaviour.

// nautilus - create empty file
Every file-browser does manage files, this includes the creation of
"empty files", not only "empty directories". This function was removed
with "3.6". Nautilus doens't fullfill the basic requirement of a
file-browser. This is wrong!
Instead users are forced to use the XDG-Directory "Templates" to create
a template for an empty file.

The problem of GNOME3 is not the GNOME Shell

Hello!

Please don't take the following explanation as attack on you or your
work. What I want is helping you and GNOME!

The problem of GNOME3 is not the GNOME Shell, it is the constant removal
of features. To make this even more worse, the developers don't
communicate their plans and didn't react on well meant critic. Instead
the developers believe that the bloggers, the press or the users just
hate new things like the GNOME Shell[1].

GNOME 3.0 introduced a complete new user-interface and also some things
did't get ported from GNOME2.

Reference for making/modifying gnome themes?

A little while ago I found a theme for gnome-shell that I'm *very*
happy with. The changes that came with Gnome 3.8 has made it partly
unusable (the changes in search layout especially) and unfortunately
the developer of the theme has switched away from using Gnome. So I'm
left with the options to either find another theme, or fix this one
myself. I thought I'd have a stab at the latter.

To help I've been looking for some kind of themeing reference,
something that ideally lists the objects that make up the different
views of gnome-shell and their attributes.

gnome-session 3.8 listening on random tcp port?

I noticed since upgrading to gnome 3.8 that gnome-session listens on a
random tcp port. Why is this neccessary and is it possible to disable it?

Off topic - About the name of GNOME

Hi list, this is my first message on the list. I have a doubt about
the name GNOME, I know that is a acronym GNU Network Object Model
Environment, because I am reading the Ubik book by Philip Dick, and in
him names the word gnome in the chapter 10, relative a the rotary
motor (Wankel's motor), may be that not have nothing that see, but
somebody know some to respect?

Jerky mouse movement

Hello,
openSUSE v12.3
linux v3.7.10-1.1-desktop x86_64
gnome 3.6.2

Ever since gnome version 3.2 the mouse movement becomes more uneven as
the logon time increases. Initially the movement is smooth and even as
expected. As the session time increases to 2+ days the movement shows
regular pauses (every 1 - 2 seconds) for some fraction of a second, then
"catches up" to where it would have been had it not paused.

Questions about GClosure

Hello everybody,

I've a few questions about how closures should be used. I'm writing a GLib wrapper for OpenCL, and I feel the need to use callbacks. I'll try to explain what I don't understand about closures.

g_cclosure_new takes a pointer to user data as argument. This is passed to the callback in its last argument. But then, when I call g_closure_invoke() I need to pass a GValue array containing the arguments to the callback, and I guess user_data is included here. I see this as a redundant action, so my guess is I've got something wrong. I hope you can clarify this a little bit for me.

Teknical help to make KolibriOS accessible

I have asked
the KolibriOS team to insert accessibility features to the free and open
source OS Kolibri.

They have responded well, but need technical help as they state below.

Hello! Thank you for your reply. We are very interested in implementing of
Accessibility standards, but we don't sure what exactly do we need to
implement.

As for now, we have only Magnify (not very useful though) and Speak engine
(not very good though). Do we need add something else? Do we need some
text-to-speech interface for software? May be something else?

Some things I think GNOME should improve

Yeah, maybe this is another e-mail of an user who wants to add his very own
functionalities. Or maybe not. So let's see. I am going to explain why each
of these points is good for the majority:

- Close button should be more accesible. I don't know where you could place
it. Figure it out. Maybe next to the icon. Maybe a double click over the
application's title (I like this one). But you shouldn't make people to
click, look for "Exit", click again and repeat this whole proccess to close
several windows.

- The message tray.

GNOME 3.8 and the "new" Classic Mode using 3D acceleration

So now that GNOME 3.8 has "Classic Mode"[1] I'll see how loud my
notebook's fan gets, since from the picture it seems that it uses 3D
acceleration. 3D acceleration was always something which gets my (and my
friends') notebook fan very loud and decreases battery time. 3D for
desktop, at least for older notebooks, is unnecessary (I don't know if

I am posting about a nit: The desktop icons now have a thick white

A little black box

opensuse v12.2

A little black box appears on the display screen; it shows on all
desktops. It is about 4px x 8px. It shows at different places on the
screen after logging in. Sometimes it is in a location that is not
noticeable; other times it is in the center area. It sometimes
disappears, then reappears.

Has any one else seen this? Is there a cure?

Name for sanad is merged with the last name value.

Smart quotation marks become question marks with the mail provider,
for example last name’s value becomes last name?s value. You don’t
want your messages automatically rejected; although you’re not working
with GNOME. Read the Foundation Members page in GNOME and check if
sanad is merged with the last name value. You’re not developing for
GNOME.

Vincent Untz and the "users that like to hate people"

This guy is an example of someone who should shut up, listen to his users,
and never ever try championing his cause until he decides to get off his
ego. There are a myriad of user comments ever since Gnome 3 came out, and
even during its alpha/beta phases. Hell, I myself also had concerns during
the beta, but I liked the original ideas.

Grub PXEBOOT Question - DHCP

Scrollbars

When I upgraded from Fedora 17 to Fedora 18, scrollbars for me became
almost unusable. The GTK Theme that GNOME by default installs omits the
scrollbar-end arrowheads. and alters how the screen behaves when the
user clicks in the scrollbar but outside of the slider.

I'm used to using a GUI (i.e., the scrollbar) to vertically move my
view, whenever the amount of data exceeds window-height.

Custom keyboard settings

I've just come back to Gnome after being away for over a year[1].
I've found some things have improved since then and I've decided to
give Gnome another try.

Since I last used Gnome I've moved back to my native Sweden and
Swedish keyboards have a layout that isn't at all convenient for
programmers. Earlier, when using LXDE+LXDM, I had a setup where I
modified the keymap using a per-user XKB configuration via ~/.xprofile
[2]. However, now I find that this scheme no longer works.

Gnome-system-monitor - rounded graphs: a proof of concept

Hi,

Recently, I have been hacking on the gnome-system-monitor code, to
implement some aesthetic changes, for things that have long bothered
me about GSM. the big change that i have been working on - adding
rounded corners to the graphs (rather than having rectangles that
don't even use the same background as the notebook bg color in many
cases (ie: you end up with notebook/graph colors not matching on many
themes + it just looks (imho) a bit ugly / unrefined).

Kerberos Access

is the best way to manage Kerberos tickets from GNOME3? I has assumed
there would be a Kerberos "online account", but that isn't available.

Adding Kerberos to 'the system' via YaST does not work well as it is my

Multihead strangeness

I have a Dell laptop with one of those dual video chips in it (Intel and
ATI) and I normally run the fglrx driver for Xorg and Debian GNU/Linux
unstable. This computer has a VGA port for connecting an external
monitor, and when I connect a monitor to the port, I get a nice
dual-headed display which I can configure through the gnome tool.
However, it will often spontaneously change the configuration, most
often to "mirrored" or sometimes it will turn one or the other display
off.

Dconf database corrupted?

Hi

I use Fedora 17 and gnome-shell 3.4.2. Today I noticed that login takes
too long - about 30 to 40 seconds. I don't know when it started, because
I usually just lock my screen and don't log out.

So I started debugging. First I created a new user - log in time was
fine. Then I suspected that there must be something about my settings,
so I went to .config dir and renamed dconf dir to dconf.bak, logged out
and (suprise) my log in time was about 2-3 seconds as it is supposed to
be.

Therefore I think that .config/dconf/user binary file is somehow
corrupted.

How does one install software in Gnome Shell

Hello,

I just installed Ubuntu Gnome Shell Remix, and I'm trying to install some
software into it. The problem is I can't find a way to do that. There
doesn't seem to be a software center or similar available for the purpose.
I thought I'm somewhat of a power user, but this one beats me. I've spent a
couple of hours trying to solve the problem, reading the sparse manual and
looking for the answer online too. So help me out and tell how does one
install software in Gnome Shell.

recordMyDesktop crashes GNOME Shell?

I tried to record a video on Fedora 17.
I installed gtk-recordmydesktop package.
I launched it, clicked 'Record' then above panel disappeared.

How to escape if you meet similar situation: Alt+F2, gnome-terminal,

Gtkmm2 binaries with Gcc 4.7.2

I don't know if it's a known issue, I guess yes, but just in case :

I tried to use latest binaries package Gtkmm2 for Win32
gtkmm-win32-devel-2.22.0-2.exe,
(<a href="https://live.gnome.org/gtkmm/MSWindows" title="https://live.gnome.org/gtkmm/MSWindows">https://live.gnome.org/gtkmm/MSWindows</a>) with latest mingw32 toolchain
(sourceforge), using gcc 4.7.2. It causes a crash when execution is
launched.

All is fine with gcc 4.6.2.

I've read something about an ABI incompatibility, but nothing is precised
(I think) in the download page.

Sorry if useless,

Screen resolution change notification

I'm trying to develop a program that interfaces with gnome. My program
needs to know when the user changes the display resolution from the
Display Preferences. I tried to search for a DBus signal that's sent,
but I couldn't find anything.

Is there a DBus signal that's sent when the user changes the display
resolution? DBus is the easiest to interface with, but it can be from
another mechanism. Is there any way for my program to know when the
user changes the display?

New system - need help with <alt-tab>

I killed my old system (f16) with a bottle of pepsi last week at IEEE

Well I have a new system; basically the same Lenovo x120e, but with the

drive onto this system. Most importantly my mail folders!

But the joy is getting Gnome 3 customized. I did NOT do a good job of

for right now and that is <alt-tab> behavor.

How to prevent gnome-settings-daemon from touching keyboard configuration at all?

Hi,

As you may know Gnome 3.6 got redesigned keyboard layout
management/configuration.
I'm not going to blame its developers, but actually it's not usable at
all for those who speak at least
two languages and uses two layouts. Maybe english-only-speaking devs
did not notice that, but
it's major regression - one can't switch layout via key/key combo he used to.

But there's another issue - I can't configure it via xorg.conf or
startup script with setxkbmap - because
gnome-settings-daemon overrides keyboard layout settings.

Brightness adjustment won't work

Hi,

I'm currently using GNOME 3.6, but had issues with previous versions
also, so this seems to be something more essential.

I'm not sure what would be the right list to post to, so I'm using the
most general one, maybe someone could point me in the right direction,
so I could get in contact with the right group of developers.

Basically what my problem comes down to is that I can't control the
brightness from within GNOME. When pressing the appropriate keys on my
keyboard, nothing happens.

Before you dismiss this as another hate letter regarding GNOME 3, let me
stop you. I like the new UI, I like it a lot. I support the decision to

enjoy the removal of those icons from the desktop. But despite all of these

File open/save dialog policy changes

Hi list

I regularly launch programs from the command line in deep directory
structures to begin editing a new (as yet unnamed file). I'm a research
scientist and have >20 projects on the go at once, so file organisation is
essential.

Unsurprisingly, in such cases, when I want to save my work for the first
time, I'm going to want to save to the directory from which I launched the
program (i.e. terminal's `pwd`).

gnome programs used to, on the whole, respect this - a huge efficiency gain
and avoidance of deep frustration compared to windows which always goes
back to "My Documents".

collapse caused by screenshot

Today when I was visiting a website and wanted to take a screenshot, I
pressed Shift+Print Screen. Then I changed my mind and right-clicked
the mouse to cancel the screenshot. After I did this, however, the
gnome-shell collapsed and there came out a notification asking me to
send messages to ubuntu. A moment later the gnome-shell restarted
again. So I tried again the operations described above and the same
thing happened, except that gnome-shell didn't restart at this time.
What was worse, I couldn't input any more! That means I couldn't
restart my computer in the terminal.
