flash on www.nbc.com

Is there some trick to getting flash to work through firefox?
When I click on a Chuck episode,
the peacock shows up and wiggles its tail, but that is all that happens.
Zoom in works.
I've running FC 11.
About tells me that I'm running Adobe Flash Player 10,0,45,2 .

I can play flash on some sites.
On others, I can download and use mplayer.
On www.nbc.com, neither.

Hybrid SLi Laptops

I know nVidia in their (wisdom?) have dropped the idea of supporting
hSLi in Linux, so I was wondering if I can ever expect to be able to use
the more powerful graphics potential in Linux?

Since updating to the 2.6.32 kernel,if I enable hSLi Linux fails to
boot. I suspect this is because it detects the other GPU but cannot
initialise it properly.

Rest assured I am well pleased with Fedora 12 and KDE 4.4 and wish to
express my appreciation to all those people that made it possible, and of
course the people who provide valuable feedback and assistance on this
forum.

sound card not detected on FC12 out of the blue

Hi,

It has been several years (literally) since I have had major sound problems
under Linux, since sound support has gotten much better. However, my sound
recently stopped working, and I'm mystified. I'm using an HP Pavilion
dv9700, which I believe uses an Intel HD audio card. I've gone through a few
kernel upgrades on this machine recently, but support for these cards is
enabled, so I can't imagine that's the issue. My sound card isn't listed on
inspection of /proc/asound/cards and /dev/dsp is missing, though with the
deprecation of OSS maybe this isn't even an issue.

How to install software without root password (PolicyKit?)

brand new chinese mobile phone: webcam usage

Dear list!
I've a nice chinese mobile phone [1] and would like to use its webcam
on F12 [2]. Connecting it through ISB-cable results in errors [3]. I
can't find appropriate solution in google. But as I can see there's
some problems with usb 2-2 support in my kernel and this particular
phone model. Is there an option I should add to kernel boot parameters
[4] in order to disable USB 2 support? Will it work after that? Is
there a better solution?
Thanks in advance!

Changing the DHCP address of a machine on my Local LAN

I have a LAN at home of 4 machines. Up to yesterday all of them were
getting their ip addresses from the DSL router I have at home. Suddenly
one of the machines (an F12 machine) began to use ATT's DHCP server to
get its ip address.

I know there is a way to change that machine back to using the router at
home to get DHCP service but I have forgotten how to do this. Can
someone help me?

selinux file permissions

Dear List,

MySQL backward compatibility question

I'm starting to play around with MySQL and PHP on fedora 12.

With Fedora's fanatical devotion to churning out latest
versions of everything, I'm just wondering what the rate
of new MySQL versions that are non-backward compatible
has been like.

Would I be better off using mysqldump and restoring databases
across fedora releases as time goes on, or is just restoring the
/var/lib/mysql datadir sufficient to retore databases most
of the time?

Just curious about the best way to approach backups if I
actually accumulate any useful data in these experiments...

How to play webradio with Firefox

I have to copy the link of a webradio and then fire up VLC, select
open location from clipboard to play the desire audio clip. If I just
brow the website with Firefox and then click on the play now button,
it won't work at all. When I check the Tools->Add-ons->Plugins,
mplayerplug-in gecko-mediaplayer 0.9.9, VLC Multimedia Plugin are
there and with "Disable" button at right side when highlight the
plugin (so I assume these 2 plugins are activated).
Both VLC and MPlayer are working with video, DVD movies.

What's your fave--Gnome or KDE

In looking over the reviews of Fedora 12, I was shocked that a big piece
of the possible Fedora 12 experience is missing: KDE.

I just discovered KDE. I don't know why I didn't use it sooner than
this. Now is it just my brand-new hardware, or the massive improvements
that Fedora has seen over the last several years, or is KDE the desktop
to beat?

Sure, I had a learning curve--like how to use the new Desktop Folder as
a widget, and how the wallpaper actually shows through it wherever you
need to place it. And how to use Desktop Activities, and the K App
Launcher.

Connection problems with encrypted root partition

Hi, every time i encrypt my root partition (encrypted at installation time)
i cannot establish connection with my wireless. It try to connect and ask me
again for WEP key again every time with no success. I've tried all
combinations, hex, pass string, ... with no avail.

I do it through NetworkManager, no DHCP, and all fields are correctly.

There is any issue about this already documented?. I've tried to search the
web but didn't find any documentation.

Thanks in advance.

how to enable 11N wireless?

Hi Folks,

my netbook has:

Network controller: Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 4965 AG (rev 61)
Ethernet controller: Attansic Technology Corp. Atheros AR8121/AR8113/AR8114 PCI-E Ethernet Controller (rev b0)

I know the 4965 supports both G & N protocols. only G is being used; how do i enable N ?
do i need to kick the controller? on moblin, it said AGN in the banner!

Thx, jackc...

My contribution

Maybe you'll remember I had problems opening files in Firefox from
TBird. If I clicked a link, it wouldn't automatically open in Firefox.
Here's the solution.

Under Edit => Preferences => Advanced => General, you have "System
defaults" which says "Always check to see if Firefox is the default
browser on startup". This option should be checked under all
circumstances if you plan to use Firefox by default. Here's why I
didn't check it.

While checking other options a while back, I saw this one and thought
I didn't need this as I only use Firefox to view html files.

gnome on F12 can't auto login user1, but can direct login user2

Hi

I have 2 users; USER1 and USER2 on F12. On gnome, I set USER1 to be
auto login as below /etc/gdm/custom.conf

# GDM configuration storage

[daemon]
TimedLoginEnable=true
TimedLogin=USER1
TimedLoginDelay=5

the problem is that I can't log out USER1 and login USER2. When I log
out USER1, click on USER2, it shows select language and click on
login.

RLIMIT_DATA problem: NOTABUG?

I tried to prevent buggy programs from bringing my system to a halt by
setting an RLIMIT_DATA with "ulimit -d", but I discovered that the limit
has no effect due to a glibc behavior. I reported this as a bug:

https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=569714

I am convinced that this is an infelicitous behavior that deserves at
least a WONTFIX, but the assignee seems equally convinced that it is
NOTABUG, and I do not understand the terse justification given. I don't
want to go on reopen warring forever. Could I please have an outside
opinion?

Fedora 11 won't boot after update.

Hi,

Let me begin by apologizing for not being able to give more info about this
problem than what I do, but I simply don't know how to go about it. I have a
MacBook Pro (5,2) on which I have happily run FC11 for some time. Tonight,
while I was working on something a message about suggested updates popped up
and for the first time I did what I've never done before: I clicked "Install
all updates" without checking what it was. I then left off. When I came back
the screen had frozen. I did a forced reboot but now the computer hangs
after the GRUB screen.

nfs mounting

I have nfs setup, and works great. But the way I have it mounted, is at
boot via /etc/rc.local file with a mount command listed. I was
wondering if there was another way to get it mounted, or a more
automated way via a script that does just that or something?

I already tried and don't want auto mounting, as there are times when
want to ftp or download file from internet and that directory isn't
accessible until you click on it via file browser or whatever.

Media palyers in KDE hide mouse cursor

Hi;
I have noticed that all the media players in KDE hide the mouse cursor.
Not only that they appear to disable it for a while.
If you play a video file and move the cursor over the video it vanishes.
You have to wiggle the mouse like mad to get it back.

How do I turn the is feature off?
I am using the classic KDE cursor font.

Update broke network

Hello,

And I need it, now. This is a big disaster. This is Fedora 13.

What can I do? Thanks.

Configuring iptables firewall for FTP server (or TFTP server)

Wireless USB slow to connect

I'm using a Linksys wireless usb on a machine with

suggestions on how to decrease the time it takes to
get a connection? Thanks in advance.

f12: evolution 2.28.2: attach icon for some message it is not show

Hi, someone have noticed regard this issue in evolution 2.28.2 on f12?

For some message, the attach icon is not show and seems that the message
is without attach.

In "schermata-1bn.png" is show the problem: the focus is on message
"indirizzi", which has a "indirizzi.pdf" attachment, but the attach icon
is not show left subject.

This happens only with some message (in "schermata-2bn.png" is OK) and
in all evolution version of f12 (with f10 this problem does not occur).

Someone have some suggest?

Is this a bug?

Many thanks.

F12-i386-DVD iso won't burn properly -- SOLVED

[1]

Yes, if you read my original message, you'll see that I always use the
rawread script for reading, which is referenced at the end of [1] as a
better way of doing the same thing (since it can be used in a pipe
instead of having to write the entire file to disk, as the isograb
script does). My comments in bugs #186512 and #397141 (marked as a
duplicate of #186512) describe how I experience the premature read
failure while using this script to do the reading.

F12-i386-DVD iso won't burn properly -- SOLVED

is the leadout added either by the writer software or the DVD writer >
itself.

I have a pile of old CDs, burned without zero padding years ago, which
disagree with you. For example, see

https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=186512

which I reported 4 years ago and is still unresolved (and Alan Cox, who
probably knows more about the readahead bug than either of us, has
looked at it, so there's nothing obviously wrong with my report). The
effect of the readahead bug is to prevent the last few dozen KB of the
ISO from being read. I've done plenty of experiments.

nfs issues between fc11 and fc12?

Hi All --

wondering if anyone has had any problems with nfs between an
fc12_nfs_server and fc11_nfs_client? I have a client that periodically
hangs on doing something like:

tree /mynfs

or

find /mynfs

Basically a full metadata listing of the nfs share. The nics look fine
and the routing looks ok, no nic errors reported on either side. The
network has been stable. I did have to
change IPaddresses, but it was a basic switch from 10.0.0.1 to
10.0.1.1 on the server and 10.0.0.253 to 10.0.1.253 on the client.
Thanks for any input!!!

FIXED: FC12+control-center-extras -> DEATH

Fixed by updating nautilus.
Yes, I should have applied all the updates immediately
after the install, but as usual we were in a rush.
More haste, *much* less speed in this case.
I live, and sometimes learn...

Automatically forcing umount ncp filesystems

Sometimes I need to mount a Novell filesystem like this:

/sbin/ipx_configure --auto_interface=on --auto_primary=on
/usr/bin/ncpmount -S NAMEBOX -u500 -U cn=ale.ou=tecs.o=foo -Pfoobar -V
Vol1 /mnt/Novell/

If I forgot to manually unmount it, the computer hangs at shutdown: I
waited few minutes, after that
I pushed the poweroff button (I know... shame on me!!!) ;)

How can I avoid it ?
Can I set a timeout, somewhere ?

F12 here.

Thanks

To upgrade or to change to a more 'stable' distrobution

All,

I am polling for options on some of my servers. I have two that are
out of date now, one sorely out of date (using Fedora 8) and I am
wondering what the best path to upgrading that would be. I would go over
to CentOs on it, but I don't know how stable the move out be or what the
level of effort would be on that, so I am polling for answers. I could
also upgrade it to the latest Fedora if that is painless, per say. The
other system is too large, in terms of file system to effectively back
up (3.2 Terabytes of space) given my current means, and that system is
on Fedora 9.

FC12+control-center-extras -> DEATH

Hi all,

Having just spent a nice few days moving over to FC12 I thought I'd add
the final touch and install control-center-extras so that I could regain
focus control over my windows. (Why was this removed to an optional extra I wonder?)
The result of doing this is that I now get millions of instantiations of the
Gnome File-Manager and everythib=ng eventually grinds to a halt.

My way out of this was to break into basic screen mode with CTRL/ALT/F1
then modify /etc/inittab to force the system to start up in mode3 instead of
mode5 and reboot.

F12-i386-DVD iso won't burn properly -- SOLVED

I'm not sure what you mean by "requested number of bytes", since your
command doesn't request a specific number, but relies on the OS to
detect the correct size of both files (which in the case of /dev/dvd is
unreliable).

Re: Kde4 question re desktop menu items.

Kevin,

I must apologize for not responding to your earlier post in a timely manor, I had system problems on a different system with the radeon driver which is still broken for me.

With kde 3 I was able to define the right button in the desktop to bring up the desktop menu where I put "save session" for example, and the middle button in the desktop to bring up the application menu; the left button in the desktop was a no-op. This was in effect for all desktops; I usually have 6 or more configured. It looks like kde4 has enabled each desktop it's own config options.

(OT) Generate Graphical Tree (SVG / PNG) of Directory Structure

Hello,
First, I apologize for the OT question, but I figure this list is one of the
best resources that may be able to answer this. I have attempted a Google
search for this, of course.

I am wondering if anyone knows any tool to generate a graphical representation
of directory structure as a tree. Directories would be a node, files would be
leaves. I know about the command line "tree". It's similar, but not exactly
what I need. It'd be nice to be able to rotate something like the output of
"tree" command line 90 degree, so that the siblings are on the same horizontal
level.

To F12 or not to F12

Don Quixote de la Mancha wrote (in another thread, which I am trying to
break away from):

Well, I might be the best person to ask, because as I see it, I have no
choice: I stopped at FC6, and I now realize that my hardware is
hopelessly obsolete and can't handle the ever-more-complex Javascript
that is a part of half the Web these days, especially the social sites
Digg.com, Propeller.com, Buzz.Yahoo.com, and, of course, the
incomparable Twitter.com.

F12-i386-DVD iso won't burn properly -- SOLVED

Reading /dev/dvd in general is not reliable since depending on the
hardware, it may not read exactly the right number of bytes (hopefully,
it will at least read >= the right number, which means your command
would either give an EOF error if the number was greater, or say the
files are identical if it's the same).

I use the rawread script from

http://www.troubleshooters.com/linux/coasterless.htm#rawread

which automatically reads the correct size of the ISO, and runs a dd
command reading exactly that much off the disc.

Disk error??

Hi

The hard disk on a laptop shows failing error "Disk had many bad
sectors' it suggests 'backup data and replace disk. Of course, this
test information was generated by Palimpsest Disk Utility on F12.
However, when I used self-test utility from BIOS (HP 6710), it passed
all tests.

Which result is reliable, one from Palimpsest Dish Utility or BIOS
self-test utiltity?

if this disk is failing, how can I check what section or partition
where errors reside?

F12: .gvfs is no longer dynamic?

I have once was able to have a fully active remote
network connection to a .gvfs mounted filesystem from
which I could do a 'tail -f /file.log, but
now, it does not work. It works on F9, 10, and I am not
sure about F11, but definitely sure that F12 does not.

Has this been reported before, is this considered
a bug, or is intended by (new) design?

KAddressbook, Nepomuk, etc

I'd really like to have a "database" for storing
information about contacts (as in an address book).
My base is Fedora/KDE.

My requirements are:

1. The application should be web-based,
like CUPS, BackupPC, etc.

2. There should be a simple interface with mobile phones.

3. There should be a simple interface with KMail/KAddressBook.

4. The program should be sufficiently flexible
to allow new fields (eg images) to be added.

5. The program should allow general information
eg about films or books to be stored.

Sound lockup if gdm pulseaudio enabled

I've been having various issues with pulseaudio since upgrading my F10
box to F12 recently (it was previously working fine).

The core issue seems to have been worked around my my disabling gdm
puleeaudio (via root's gconf-editor, as mentioned on a blog somewhere).

I'm concerned, though, that that's just masking the real issue.
Essentially, the issue is that, with gdm audio enabled, any normal user's
app. will hang when trying to generate sound.

kwin focus

I'm having real problems getting kwin to focus as i want it. Can
somebody explain the difference between:

focus follows mouse
focus under mouse
focus strictly under mouse

and what the various focus stealing prevention levels actually do?

what i'm trying to achieve is that any new windows on the current
desktop should be at the top of the stack, but only receive focus if
they're under the mouse. for windows which appear on a different
desktop, i want them at the top of the stack on that desktop, but i
don't want the desktop to change.

Fedora 12 does not work after replacing the motherboard

Hello All,

I kindly ask for your support. On my MythTV frontend-only machine, I
had to replace the motherboard. The old motherboard was an ASUS P5KR
(Intel P35 chipset), and the newly installed motherboard is an MSI
P43T-C51 (Intel P43 chipset). The old MB wasn't faulty - I just had
to urgently use it in another machine.
Everything else in this system remained basically the same - CPU,
RAM, Video, etc. My video adapter is NVidia 8600GT made by ASUS (don't
remember the model exactly).

FLV4 video - which codec do I need?

I've got an FLV4 encoded video that I'd like to watch. Mplayer says

I downloaded and installed the "all" codec pack from the mplayer
website, didn't help.

Any clues appreciated.

Thanks,

John

F12-i386-DVD iso won't burn properly

I have downloaded this ISO twice, and verified it each time. I have made
no less than three "coasters" while trying to create a DVD from it. Then
I moved the ISO to another machine, and another program--which then
proceeded to tell me that the ISO looked like a CD, not a DVD.

What's going on? Has nobody noticed that the DVD ISO is no good, and
that the six-CD install set, or one of the two live CDs, are the only
options?

Re: Risks of backing up live mounted filesystems using dump(8)

Journals make the problem far worse.

Good to know and understand.

On restore you will restore a journal log no longer related to whats on
the media, then risk replaying it and causing further damage.

This makes sense. It was not clear to me that the journal was being stored in the "dump data". If so, can it be disabled immediately before dump(8) and then reenabled immediately after? Some highly volatile file systems (like the Oracle file-based database) claim to support hot backups.

User to set CPU scaling?

Is there a way for non-root users to be able to administer CPU
scaling? Currently the interfaces are all owned by root:root and short
of a hack to change their permissions on boot, I'm wondering if
there's a "proper" way to do it?

Hulu.com and 64-bit Problem?

This problem has existed since around January 9. At first, Hulu claimed
that everyone just had to update their Flash version. When people did
this and still reported having the problem, they started ignoring
reports. Lots of archived comments at

http://www.hulu.com/discussions/9

with not a single response by Hulu (the relevant threads are the
non-sticky ones with thousands of views).

Which backup program should one use? Was Re: Risks of backing up live mounted filesystems using dump(8)

This question brings up a question that has been bothering me.

Hopefully, leaving this question on the same thread, but changing
the subject line, is the appropriate method to ask my question.

I've been confused what backup program, dump or tar, to use.

At first, I was using dump to back up my partitions.

I switched to using tar after reading
http://www.redhat.com/docs/manuals/linux/RHL-9-Manual/admin-primer/s1-di...

but then I read the following
http://dump.sourceforge.net/isdumpdeprecated.html

and now I don't know what to think.

I'd like to know what backup program,

Hulu.com and 64-bit Problem?

A curious incompatibility, it seems, between Hulu.com and 64-bit libflashplayer.so plugin has recently reared its ugly head: streaming video won't play or Hulu won't stream them for whatever reason. Also, any other streaming sight that gets some of their content from Hulu like Fancast.com or SlashControl.com has the same problem with those Hulu videos. Those TV shows, movies, clips, etc. that don't come through Hulu work fine.

When it fails, Hulu reports that there may be a problem with my network.

How do I recompile a kernel module?

I would like to know if someone experienced to install texlive-2009

I am running fedora 10. On some computer I installed fedora 12, but in

Is there a way to upgrade texlive under fedora 10 or 12.

Thank you.

BTW. Why texlive 2009 has not been included in f12?

Risks of backing up live mounted filesystems using dump(8)

Hi,

I'm hoping I can start a brief thread discussing the potential risks involved with backing up live mounted (RW) ext2/3/4 filesystems using dump(8). Here are the reasons I ask this:

1. My understanding is that it is safest to dump unmounted filesystems to ensure all buffers are flushed and all files on the device are consistent and up-to-date. However...
2. Performing filesystem dumps can be a time consuming process and therefore taking the extra time to boot to level 1 and mount / RO to access utilities just adds additional work.

Using f13 rpms in f12?

If one wanted to install a rawhide kernel in a running f12 machine I guess
you could do something like
yum --enablerepo development install kernel kernel-devel etc

However there are now rpms in the development directories both for 13/ and
for rawhide/ (and i386 and x86_64) - is there a way to install an f13
(specifically), as opposed to rawhide, package in a system running f12?

Background image on dual screen?

I have two monitors an my background image is exactly the size of both
combined. I used to be able to display this background image across
both screens as if they were a single display. I think I chose "Tiled"
to make this happen, but I'm not sure it was always that way.

Anyway, after an update a few months ago, I can no longer do this. My
background image is displayed, either clipped or scaled, once on each
screen instead of once across all screens, no matter what style I
choose from the Appearance Preferences dialog. Is there a way to fix
it?

Trying to convert a LVM partition to non-LVM

I was working on a linux box which had a failing disk over
the weekend. It still booted, but flagged smartd errors
and had a couple of damaged files which were fortunately
replaceable (eclipse install tgz).

I booted Spinrite to make the drive readable and then planned
to use system rescue CD and gparted to copy to an identical
drive. Unfortunately, the machine used the default boot
partition (ext3) and LVM for the root and swap partitions.
gpartd cannot currently deal with LVM partitions.

Mystified by crontab/anacrontab

I'm trying to understand how cron works nowadays.
I've been comparing my Fedora-12 laptop
with my CentOS-5.4 desktop,
and am slightly baffled by the difference between them.

On the Fedora-12 system the venerable /etc/crontab is empty,
and the work to be done is listed in /etc/anacrontab .
As far as I can make out, there is a program /etc/cron.d/0hourly
which every hour runs /etc/cron.hourly,
which in turn runs a program 0anacron,
which presumably checks /etc/anacron.daily, etc.

I take it this roundabout process is intended
to deal with the case where a laptop is only running
for part of the

info about how much memory ramfs is using

Hello,
If I set a ramfs file system like this on a Fedora 12 system (but I think it
is the same in general):

mkdir /ramfs
mount -t ramfs -o size=10m ramfs /ramfs

I can see it via mount but not via df command.
[root at tekkaman ~]# mount
ramfs on /ramfs type ramfs (rw,size=10m)

As ramfs is dynamic and can go beyond initial set, how can I see how much
memory is using?
For example in my case where I set 10MB, I can do

[root at tekkaman ~]# dd if=/dev/zero of=/ramfs/testfile bs=1024k count=30
30+0 records in
30+0 records out
31457280 bytes (31 MB) copied, 0.0393341 s, 800 MB/s

But mount gives the s

Fedora 12 shutdown hangs (after recent kernel update)

On doing Shutdown as Normal User, there is a quick scroll of messages
(similar to those at login) and it then hangs with a blinking cursor
at the top left of the screen. I noticed this after a recent update
that included a new kernel.

2.6.31.12-174.2.22.fc12.i686.PAE

Trying to shutdown through a virtual terminal (Ctrl-Alt-F2) after
logging in as root also did not help. There was a blinking cursor on
top left of the screen and the PC hung there with C-A-Del having no
effect.

Is there any place to look for possible Shutdown Error Message / logs ?

Fedora 12, Xorg, and Apex Outlook KVM, - can't nail resolution

Hi,
I've been looking at this for some time in both the
archives of the list and the web in general. The problem
is that when my Fedora 12 machine is connected though the
KVM (Apex Outlook 8 port) the monitor shows up as "Unknown"
and the resolution is limited to 800x600.

If I plug the monitor directly into the machine, it resolves
just fine and I have the full range of resolutions.

I tried an number of things so far and the one which seemed
most promising was to plug the monitor directly into the
machine and go to run level 3.

NetworkManager 0.8?

Greetings,
Is there an official/unofficial F12 repository which has
Networkmanager 0.8 installed? My uni wireless is Windows based and
doesn't work with 0.7. Apparently this is working in 0.8.

I'd rather not have to build it myself, if there's a repo I can add.
