CD audio ripping in Jaunty

By Nigel Ridley at 09/10/2009 - 12:46

What's with Jaunty and ripping audio CD's? First a dialogue window doesn't pop up and ask me what
I want to do. I then unsuccessfully tried to mount it so that I could see its content in Dolphin,
and hopefully, as in the old Konqueror, just copy the 'MP3' folder to my home folder.
I also tried K3B but it kept giving errors every time I tried to rip the audio CD.

In the end I stuffed the CD in my daughter's Gutsy box and it is ripping just fine.

Is it going to work properly in Karamel Kola (aka 9.10)?

Blessings,

Nigel

Perhaps they will get it fixed for Leaping Lizard. Konqueror was great,
Dolphin just needs more time and capability to take Konqueror's place.

Greetings Nigel,

Torsdag den 10. september 2009 kvad Nigel Ridley:

It works fine on my standard 9.04 Kubuntu.
When I put a commercial audio cd in the drive, the device notifier pops
up, showing an icon with a note in front of a cd, and the device name
"Volume".
When i cklick that device entry, a new window opens where I can choose
between ripping with K3b or open with Dolphin.

I choose Dolphin to rip with drag and drop, just like I used to do in
Konqueror.

Hope this helps.

Best regards :o)

Do you have libk3b-extracodecs installed? I believe this is needed to
encode mp3's. Hardy needed this package to rip cd's iirc, and I think it
is needed as well for Jaunty.

karmic does prompt to install this when k3b is first run

You can't mount an audio CD, because there is no file system on it. Once
there is no file system, there is no MP3 folder and no files to copy
either, just raw data. Unless you mean a data CD with mp3 files on it.
Take a look at audex and grip, both are in Ubuntu repos and can rip
audio CDs to any format you like (assuming you have the proper codecs
installed).

Doesn't it work already? It just doesn't ask what you want to do with
the CD after it is inserted. However, you can surely rip it with one of
the two softwares I mentioned earlier.
I don't know if KDE 4.3 in Karmic Koala will pop up a dialog when you
insert an audio cd.

So how does one view the contents of the audio CD? (Commercial audio CD - not MP3's).
With Gutsy you could navigate to it using Konqueror but in Jaunty it's just not possible.

I do hope so.....

The content of the audio is displayed using the
audiocd kioslave and *should* work in all kde
applications.

I used it for ripping audiocd's succesfully
although I've only tried it with kde 4.3.

I can!

When i insert a audiocd i get 4 options: Store with K3b, Play with
KsCD, Rip with KaudioCreator and Open Audio CD in Dolphin. Choosing
open with Dolphin the CD opens with Dolphin and i can see several
folders i can copy to. Flac, Mp3, Ogg Vorbis, Wav, CDA etc.
I'm running Jaunty with KDE 4.3.1 and several other PPA so i'm not
sure where my options coming from.

It works for me in Jaunty. I'm using KDE 4.3 from the ppa. Perhaps it was fixed recently?

With the not mounting thing, what does it do if you insert a data CD? Mine didn't used to automount any CD, this turned out to be due to HAL polling being disabled. Again I forget what I did to re-enable it but there is a command you can type to find out whether it's enabled or not. Google should be your friend here.

Or there might be a package you need to install? Under the System Settings->Advanced tab I have an option for Audio CDs which has a tab for MP3 encoder. I recall I had to install a package to get it to appear, but I can't remember what.

I have given up on k3b -- it's so darn flaky. I installed a thing called
'ripperx' and it works like a bomb.
