Installing WIcd Using Ubuntu CD After NM Quit

By Leonard Chatagnier at 01/31/2010 - 21:34

Just installed karmic on an old Dell Dimensions XPS T450. Everything OK
until I upgraded and installed kubuntu-desktop. Called for a reboot and
after rebooting completed NM wifi connection quit working. Tried to
reconfigure NM again but no luck. Attempted to install wicd but that
didn't work without a network. Ticked to use the cd/dvd to install in
software sources and reloaded but only get failure to connect on the
Ubuntu main mirror. Tried installing wicd from the Karmic CD recovery
mode using a root shell on the installed partition and even on the CD
environment or whatever it's called but no luck. Aptitude command not
recognized maybe should have used dpkg or gdebi but didn't think of it
at the time. The crick in my neck says I've been fighting to get wicd
installed for about 3 hours. Would someone please tell me how to
install a package using the Karmic alt CD of from a booted up Karmic
using the alt CD with SS ticked to use the CD. Maybe need both for the
benefit of new users and old ones like me who still has a lot to
learn-:o) Many thanks,

Use Sneakernet:

Download:
<a href="http://packages.ubuntu.com/karmic/wicd" title="http://packages.ubuntu.com/karmic/wicd">http://packages.ubuntu.com/karmic/wicd</a>
<a href="http://packages.ubuntu.com/karmic/all/wicd/download" title="http://packages.ubuntu.com/karmic/all/wicd/download">http://packages.ubuntu.com/karmic/all/wicd/download</a>
and copy to a floppy (:-) /CD and install on the Dell.

Thanks for the option. Don't have any cds at the moment but I do
have your link to refer to. I did get back NM via cd after correctly
unticking SS. Need to pay a visit to BestBuy tomorrow-:o)

The crick in my neck says I've been fighting to get wicd

i definately know that feeling..... not fun..

Would someone please tell me how to

this is an educated guess.... ive never had to install from the cdrom
other than the first install........it appears you may still have the
sources ticked for "download from the internet" above the cdrom option.
if thats true, try unchecking those sources and anything that has to
do with the net first before trying to use the cdrom source. post back
with your findings.

I did untick them but will check again to see it they are still
unchecked. I also unticked the third party mirrors in SS. Ahh, but I
didn't untick the update section tab. After doing it the reload software
did finish without error. Then aptitude update did read the cdrom.
Still couldn't install wicd. It wasn't found but was able to
install network-manager and network-manager-gnome again. I haven't had
time to get it connected yet but will try some more. Thanks for getting
me to check again.

Use the laptops ethernet port to get online, then install applications?
Can you pull an ip via the ethernet port at all?

It's not a laptop but a desktop with wifi so I don't have to string
cable. Tried NM setup several times before it was removed by trying to
install wicd and couldn't get it to connect again at all.

If you can, have you tried setting it in /etc/network/interfaces? Do
you need to see an example?

In /etc/network/interfaces:
auto wlan0
iface wlan0 inet dhcp
wpa-conf /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf

In /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf:
network={
ssid="ADD-YOUR-SSID-HERE"
proto=RSN
key_mgmt=WPA-PSK
pairwise=CCMP TKIP
group=CCMP TKIP
psk="ADD-YOUR-WPA-PASSWORD-HERE"
}

sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart

Or can you set up something like window's ICS, either with a cat6
ethernet cable or a router or hub for ethernet?

Let me know what's possible and I'll see what I can find. I've had
many situations like this, especially since I couldn't get wireless
drivers for my machines. No ethernet. Gah

Not yet. Probably need an example but the one below looks vaguely familar.

Oooops, I think I should have done that before trying to install wicd
after modifying the NM settings_;O) Just did the above after installing
NM and NMG from CD but no joy. Even ran ifdown and ifup which used to
help but not now. Of course the version installed from the CD is not the
same versions on the updated karmic.

Not easily. Dont have any cable and to move the machine to my router is
too much for my bad back. If I can get NM setup correctly a quick
install of wicd will fix everything. Flash, I can't get NM to work or
even find it in my Kmenu|system. Will try booting into gnome to see if I
can get the NM app to run therel

My wifi card is wmp54g Linksys wifi pci card and uses the rt61pci
drivers. The driver modules are all loaded but I can't find NM in my
Kmenu anywhere nor can I locate an executable in /bin or /usr/bin even
though aptitude search and show say they are installed. What a mess.
Another flash: My brain started working a bit and I dolphined over to
a Hardy part that was working on wifi. Copied the wlan0 file over from
/e/n/i and got the card to light up. Restarted networking got the card
running but the release wouldn't renew. Oh my frustrations. I'll wait
for more replies and try to calm down. Thanks for your help. Have made
some prigress but not quite there.
