Operating System emulator


I am using ubuntu and for the graduate course in Advanced Operating Systems,
I am exploring
some OS emulator, but got thoroughly confused after google search.

Can someone suggest which is the best options for OS emulator ( at least for
graduate studies).

I noticed the other posts on this thread discuss virtual machines, which I
guess are hardware emulators. Do you mean this or products like WINE which
are more software emulators?
I may be going the wrong way here.
I think a bit more detail in what you are asking would help you get the
answers you want :)
Do you have a link to a web page describing the subject you are studying?

I have used both VMware and Virtualbox. Both have served my purposes
well and would recommend either. I currently use Vbox, it is in the
repos of Ubuntu so less hassel to install and the updates are integrated
with the OS.

As mentioned, not entirely sure what you're looking for... but perhaps
VirtualBox would fit the bill? It allows you to run various 'guest'
operating systems on a virtual machine on top of a 'host' operating system.
There are commercial and 'Open Source' versions, but most people outside of
a corporate environment end up using the 'Personal Use & Evaluation License'
(PUEL) version.
