Latest kernel crashes X and gnome

Anyone else having problems with kernel 3.10.0-957.5.1.el7.x86_64?

After my yum update today a reboot hung.

CR repo update disaster for my desktop.

I have a centos 7.5 desktop workstation with dual nvidia graphic cards running three monitors. I use the i915 motherboard graphics adapter for the third monitor with bumblebee to work the magic to enable the three contiguous work spaces.
I use the kmod nvidia drivers for the two graphics cards. This has worked without a hitch for 5 months until this weekend.
I enabled the CR repo and did the yum update. Some 800+ rpms were offered and all seemed to resolve depenancies OK, so yes it was started. The updates completed and all looked good, until the reboot.

Frefox update from firefox-60.2.0-1.el7.centos.x86_64 to 60.2.1-1.el7.centos.x86_64 lost master password

Hi list,

Did an update to firefox last night and rebooted over night.

Today I find firefox started without asking for master password - funny
me thinks.

Try to log in to a web service I use and find that my password does not

Check preferences and find that no master password is set and the
password list / table is empty.

As I do not trust my passwords to the cloud I do not save these to my
firefox profile ..... so back to manual entry for all my sites....

Over the last week or so I have noticed that chrome fails to load pages
- in fact even the setup pages do not load.

Blow away the ~/.config/google-chrome/ files and restart

Seems to work for a little while - then stops again - no other pages load.

I have done the cleanup of the .config/google-chrome directory and then
with the fresh session tried both with my google account and without any
account - same result.

I have just done an update in the hope it may fix things so now running
Version 58.0.3029.110 (64-bit)

What is going on?

kmod-nvidia problems

Hi List,

I use the kmod-nvidia package on my CentOS workstations.

Always this has "just worked".

Doing a yum update this morning I now get this:

clamd@amavisd fails under systemd

Trying to set up a mail server under CentOS7 - having done this with
CentOS5 and CentOS6 over the last decade with no issues and reliable
service, it was time to upgrade (?) to CentOS7. Shouldn't be a problem,

Getting to grips with systemd has been challenging - to say the least.

So a brief overview of what I am trying to set up:

postfix / amavisd-new / spamassassin / clamav so we can receive mail and
deal with the major rubbish that gets thrown at any open port 25 smtp

no problems installing each of the above and their configuration files.

VLC and playing .mkv files with opus audio

Hi list,
I use VLC from nux-dextop as my default player.
Recently began using youtube-dl and it grabs the video and audio just
fine and produces .mkv files.
I can play the resulting file just fine with Enqueue in SMPlayer, GXine,
SMPlayer and Videos -
VLC unfortunately says 'VLC could not decode the format "Opus"'
Yet my google search indicates this issue was solved many releases ago -
2.0.4 and CentOS 7 is at version 2.2.2-4.el7

Anyone else have this problem and/or ideas on how to get it going?

Systemd and VirtualBox

The continuing challenges of getting a workable server continue.
The latest spins of VirtualBox seem to have solved the issues of DKMS
auto compiles of the driver being aborted. The yum updates work as
expected, provided one stops the running vms manually first.

However, trying to get systemd to start the vms is proving to be a PITA.
I have extensively googled and found that there are no specific
instructions for Fedora/Redhat/CentOS and VirtualBox setups for systemd.

C7 Desktop background

Just stumbled into a problem with my recent new build C7 work station.
Fully updated, gnome desktop, all was working well until I had a play
with Tweak Tool, I wanted to try some other themes for window layouts as
the default seems to not show check boxes correctly in all situations.

EPEL - Clamav update?

EPEL maintainers?
I note messages in the log about updated version 0.99.1 of CLAMAV being
available since Mar 5th.
for CentOS 6 no update is available yet.
I used to use rpmforge for this package but that languished for months
before updates became available and eventually stopped altogether.
Is there something I can do to assist in getting this package updated?
I have no idea if this is a difficult package to compile with lots of
dependancies or some otherwise complexities.
In this era of constant SPAM and so many virus / trojan attempts to do
harm to others, it is vital that we run this

CentOS7 changes strike again.

Still in the process of migrating from an old CentOS5 server to a brand
new CentOS7.

After finally getting Virtualbox-5.0 installed and a new Wondoze10 Pro
installed it became time to shift the data from the old server to the new.

The old server is headless and I installed the old WindozeXP into the
Virtualbox4.x via the command line.
To do some of the admin I needed to attach to the windoze via a gui and
used rdesktop via an ssh tunnel of port 3389.

yum / rpm kernel problems - CentOS 7.2

This is the second time I have come across a problem with yum / rpm and
kernel packages with CentOS 7.
I install CentOS7 and do a yum update
I add elrepo epel and virtualbox repos
I install Virtualbox-5.0
It fails to install
it give a message similar to :
- WARNING: The vboxdrv kernel module is not loaded. Either there is no
available for the current kernel (3.10.0-327.el7.x86_64) or it

SSD drives for the OS - 1 or 2?

Preparing to build a small replacement server (initially built in 2005)
and normally for the OS I would buy 2x500GB drives and deploy in a RAID
1 configuration.
Now we have SSD drives available
- does just a single SSD drive offer the same reliability or is there
advantage in deploying two in a Raid 1 config?

Also, what form factor / interface is best for the SSD OS boot device on
a server M/B?

Nagios, getting started

Hi List,
I have noted a number of times, various comments on this list about
Nagios, hence my questions.

just been employed by an ISP and they want to upgrade their fairly
extensive nagios monitoring.
They are mostly an ubuntu lts shop, so 1st question
What advantages does the RH/CentOS world have (if any?) over the ubuntu
LTS world?

They are talking about running the server on a vm, as I have no
experience with this tool, is that appropriate?

CentOS 6 mount of ntfs formatted usb stick fails

I recently received an 8GB usb stick that fails to mount on my fully
patched CentOS 6.5 desktop machine.

The stick works just fine on a windoze 7 laptop (my daughter's) with no
special drivers installed.

fdisk -l /dev/sdf gives the following:

default gw route has gone?

Weird behaviour.
A couple of days ago I installed another DSL router.
During the process I have somehow caused the default gw route to
disappear - on system start up the interface comes up fine, I can see
and connect to the local subnet but not to the internet.

[rkampen@timsws network-scripts]$ route

Anyone else getting Sane throwing i/o error after upgrades?

Hi List,

related drivers until today.

CentOS 6.4 login after reboot after apcupsd shutdown - shows POWER FAILURE

Hi list,
just putting a new server through its automatic shutdown triggered by
the UPS / apcupsd.
All worked faultlessly, including powering up when power came back on to
the UPS.

So then I go to log in and get "POWER FAILURE" followed by
"Authentication failure" - this is on the console

via SSH I just get "POWER FAILURE" and the ssh connection drops.

So I guess the, log everyone out and stop further logins instruction is
still lurking around somewhere.

How do I regain control of my server??
Does this mean I need to boot with a rescue disk and edit some file

How do I prev

Gnome Screensaver - not functioning as advertised

Hi List,
Currently running a couple of CentOS 6.3 workstations / laptops with
gnome as the default window manager.
Since the original 6.1 install the behaviour of the screensaver has changed.

I use the cosmos theme and have this activate after five minutes of idle.
Initially, when the five minutes were up, the screen would start to dim
and if one moved the mouse or hit a key on the keyboard it would drop
out of screensave and return to full bright screen.
With one of the updates since then, the behaviour has changed - now once
the 5 minutes are up - one has to wait until the gradual dimmi

200 Stream not found errors in flash player and firefox

Hi List,
I have been getting the above errors for the last few months and
extensive google foo has been less than conclusive - but indicates that
the requesting flash player is somehow putting the wrong url content
into the request.

After I recently did a yum update on my wife's laptop she too started
getting these errors. She has an old sony laptop running 5.8 and other
than this error on various streaming tv links it is working just fine.

Audio weirdness on CentOS 6.2 with flash?

Hi List,
I have an ASUS G73S laptop with our favorite OS installed and all
Sound has always "just worked"
When I use the Preferences>Sound app I can setup the hardware, input,
output and was overall very impressed.
One can check each speaker and the laptop has a front left and right and
also has a bass speaker which seems to be connected to the left rear.

The various players seem to work fine e.g mplayer, JuK, VLC media player.

Recently I wanted to play a movie off the internet and so out came Firefox.
Imagine my surprise as I hear only the background music from the rear

postfix - reject of incoming mail due to helo check??

Hi list,
I have been getting the following types of log messages

Jan 30 08:22:33 ndgonline postfix/smtpd[30538]: NOQUEUE: reject: RCPT
from unknown[]: 450 4.7.1 Client host rejected: cannot find
your hostname, []; from=< ... at orangebankfl dot com>

a rdns check shows all is well with - it belongs to the
from senders domain name.

upgrade of 32bit to 64 bit CentOS 5.7

Hi List,
Early in dec I was forced to upgrade one of my server systems -
initially built in 2004 on an intel server mb it finally failed.
Under some time pressure, I replaced the mb etc with a 64 bit asus
system and did a repair of the linux system upon reboot with a 64 bit DVD.
As one can imagine there were some headaches as the kernel was now 64
bit, but yum and friends were still 32 bit.
I managed to upgrade the required packages to 64 bit, rebooted the
server a few times and all appeared to function ok.
BTW the server runs bind, apache, postfix, dovecot, mysql, php and
related stuff.

asus-wmi.ko for Asus G73Sw running CentOS 6.2

Hi List,
Just loaded our favorite OS onto my new ASUS laptop.
Practically everything worked out of the box - I used the live DVD to
check things out and installed from there.
I have followed
<a href="" title=""></a>
to get suspend working and also to get function keys working for LCD
screen backlight controls working (Fn F5 and Fn F6).
Upon further searches I find that there is a kernel module asus-wmi.ko
available in some distros that also allows some of the other Asus
functions to operate - of part

Intel SE7210TP1-E giving memory errors

Hi List,
I've been getting the following EDAC memory errors
EDAC MC0: CE page 0xeb0dd, offset 0x0, grain 4096, syndrome 0x45, row 3,
channel 0, label "": i82875p CE
and from this seeing that these errors have been corrected.
Checking cat /sys/devices/system/edac/mc/mc0/csrow3/ch0_ce_count gives
me a count of 4
thus I now know that csrow3 - ch0 is the problem

My question is, how does this map to the on board labels

Am I correct in assuming csrow 3 is DIMM 2B?

Also I have just discovered that both the OS drives sda and sdb have
huge number of errors shown on

javaWS under firefox on CentOS 5.6 fails to launch sound

Hi List,
Before I spend hours chasing this - my initial google search seems to
indicate that javaWS and JNLP apps with sound do not work on CentOS
systems. and should resolve to the same IP

Hi list,
I am having a debate with one of my clients where I administer their
domain and storage server but the website is hosted by godaddy.
thus <a href="" title=""></a> goes to one of godaddy's servers but the and and all go elsewhere.

My website designer has been convinced by the godaddy web design team
that we should

Again, the standard practice in the industry is for and
<a href="" title=""></a> to be "tied" together. The primary domain is and you
have it while the church's web site is using the sub domain, <a href="" title=""></a>.

nfsv4 and kerberos - fails to mount

I have been trying all sorts of things to get this working.
nfsv4 works fine if I just use the nfs-v3 form of export
but this is inherently open to all on this machine.

so then using this recipe
<a href="" title=""></a>
and many others that hours of google foo shows

change exports to

log time formats - where is this defined

One of my servers is using ISO datetime formats
(2011-02-27T15:22:15.519857-05:00) in the logs
the rest use the default redhat/CentOS format (Feb 27 15:10:21).
After a couple of hours searching google I cannot find where this is
I know I changed it some months ago as an experiment but forgotten where
this was done.
the ISO format breaks logwatch - thus I need to revert.
