copy with bunzip2?

I have several pdf files as .pdf.bz2, as seen here:

I want to copy everything in and under directory a to another computer, but I want the files to be decompressed on the destination machine:

I could just use rsync and run a bunch of bunzip2 commands on the destination after the copying is completed, but perhaps there's a better way that would decompress the files in transit instead?

determining what depends on a rpm

yum remove lightdm

That command tells me that it's also going to remove lightdm-gobject and lightdm-gtk.

rpm -q --whatrequires lightdm
no package requires lightdm

So obviously we can't take the word of the --whatrequires option from the rpm command since yum remove tells me that there are two.

That being the case, using yum remove to determine the actual dependency chain is not all that helpful since (a) only the root user can do that, which seems unnecessary when all you want to get is a report about the installed packages that the rpm command can already read as a user, and (b) you're ta

On a fully updated Centos 7 system with the Mate desktop, I've just encountered what appears to be a bug in..

Update failure: Mate requires

I just tried updating this laptop to the shiny new Centos version and it appears that Mate doesn't like the new version of libgtop, as you can see here:

Error: Package: marco-1.16.1-3.el7.x86_64 (@epel)

Updated By: libgtop2-2.38.0-3.el7.x86_64 (base)

Load html file into elinks from desktop

With a html file on my (Mate) desktop I would like to be able to
right-click on it and select "open with" and have it load into elinks.

But I haven't yet figured out the magic command line that I need for
this to happen.

gnome-terminal --command="elinks %s"

That loads elinks but doesn't load the html file into it.

gnome-terminal --command="cat %s | elinks" doesn't work either.

Red Hat is Planning To Deprecate KDE on RHEL By 2024

<a href="" title=""></a>

That's still several years in the future, of course.

I use Mate on all of my machines rather than Gnome or KDE and I'm sure
many of you fine folks do the same.

But it's interesting nonetheless.

ligthdm shutdown without a mouse

I have set up a computer that's going to be hand-carried through several
airports on the way to its final destination.

This is the Lenovo laptop that I asked about earlier, where everything
works well except for the touchpad that isn't recognized at all.

Lenovo Ideapad 320 touchpad not recognized

I'm setting up a new Lenovo Ideapad 320 and everything shows up and works fine except for the touchpad.

I did have to get into the bios and set Legacy for boot device and boot mode to get Centos 7 to finish installing. The default bios settings would load the Centos 7 Gnome Live image from a usb flash drive and work (except for the touchpad) but when I tried to install to the hard drive it would get to the end of the process and kernel panic when it was writing the bootloader.

Centos 7 - Canon Powershot A410

I have an old Canon Powershot A410 camera that used to just work with
Centos 6.

NetworkManager dnsmasq plugin

I am trying to get dnsmasq to work through NetworkManager by putting
dns=dnsmasq into /etc/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.conf

NetworkManager still works but dnsmasq doesn't start.

I get this error in /var/log/messages:

could not load plugin 'dnsmasq' from file

And the referenced file doesn't exist, as stated.

So where or how do I get I don't see
any rpm that provides that file, though I'm hoping to be proved wrong
of course.

How can I disable at-spi-bus-launcher

I have a laptop that hangs up on shutdown saying that at-spi-bus-launcher is still running.

Since I have no use for at-spi-bus-launcher anyway, I would like to get rid of it, but attempting to remove the at-spi2-core rpm wants to remove 99% of my desktop as well.

The only way that I can see to get rid of it is to make /usr/libexec/at-spi-bus-launcher non-executable, but that's a pretty horrible hack.

Can I permanently disable it without resorting to that?

zenity issue with latest Centos 7 update

zenity --width 800 --entry

The window width comes out at 800 as expected, but the bar to type your entry into extends only about 1/4 of the way across the window, instead of all the way across like it did before I did the v1708 update.

I'm using Centos 7 with Mate.

Centos 5.7, I10 video, 1920x1080 monitor

I have a Centos 5.7 machine with Intel I10 video (built-in, I guess -- this is
one of those all-in-one mini terminal things) that I'm trying to put a new
1920x1080 monitor onto, without conspicuous success. Prior to this it's been
using a smaller monitor with no issues.

Try as I might I can't get the new monitor to run at its 1920x1080 resolution.
I just realized that I forgot to write down the actual resolution that it runs
at but it's less than it should be, maybe 1280x1024?

c6-cr kernel update -- joystick enabled?

Does the new kernel in the Centos 6 cr repository have the joystick enabled
again, or is the rpm from elrepo still required to use one?

smartd and palimpsest

I notice that the smartd service is not running by default on a new
installation. But palimpsest seems to get updated statistics every so often as
when I check the statistics on a drive it says "last updated" some number of
minutes ago.

So if smartd isn't running, where does palimpsest get its information from and
what is updating it?

Second question, what would enabling the smartd service gain me that I don't
have right now?

Gimp PDF plugin - Centos 5

Gimp on Centos 5 has somehow lost its ability to load a pdf file on three (i386)
different computers. I'm pretty sure that this used to work.

When I try to load a PDF file I get the initial box titled "Load Postscript"
with rendering and antialiasing options, but when I hit OK I get an error
message: Opening "filename" failed: Plug-In could not open image."

Comparing between Centos 5 and Centos 6 I see that I have a file named file-pdf
in the gimp plugins directory on Centos 6 x86_64 (/usr/lib64/gimp/2.0/plug-ins)
but that file is not preset on the Centos 5 boxes..

Gnome System Monitor crashes on Centos 6 x86_64

Has anyone else had this problem?

Clearlooks & Bluecurve icons missing from Centos 6

The Clearlooks and Bluecurve icon directories that were provided
under Centos 5 that have disappeared on Centos 6. Clearlooks icons were
provided by gnome-themes-2.16.0-1.fc6 and has disappeared with
gnome-themes-2.28.1-6.el6.noarch, and Bluecurve icons were provided by
redhat-artwork-5.1.0-28.el5.centos, which doesn't appear to exist at all with
Centos 6.

Were these icons removed for a reason?

shared cups printers disappeared

I have two computers, one with a HP printer on it and one with a Samsung
printer on it.

Both systems have their respective pritnters listed under
system-config-printer and have "enabled" "accepting jobs" and "shared" checked.

Up to a few days ago this worked fine. Suddenly I can't see either printer
from the other machine and as far as I know nothing has changed other than the
usual "yum update" stuff that has come in over the past few days.

thumbnail cache

This webpage tells me that you can set the thumbnail cache size using

<a href="" title=""></a>

However, the gconf-editor that I have on Centos 5.5 doesn't have that setting.

Is it not possible to set this value with Centos 5.5?

Terminal with variable sized font

Using gnome-terminal and the like, you can set the font size that you want and
then if you drag the window larger or smaller, you get more or less character
per line.

Is there a terminal that allows you to set the rows and columns that you want
and then resizes the text instead?

logrotate.d - reload vs restart

Looking at some of the stuff in /etc/logrotate.d, I see entries like this in
some of the configuration files:

/sbin/service privoxy reload 2> /dev/null || true

# /sbin/service privoxy reload 2> /dev/null || true
Usage: /etc/init.d/privoxy {start|stop|restart}

Changing reload to restart does work:

]# /sbin/service privoxy restart 2> /dev/null || true
Stopping Privoxy, OK.
Starting Privoxy, OK.

I find "reload" in the httpd logrotate file as well:

/sbin/service httpd reload > /dev/null 2>/dev/null || true

Googling for this finds me a ton of stuff that doesn't actually do what I'm
looking for.

I want a simple hit counter cgi script of some kind that will increment a
counter on every page load but I want to access the counter from a different

In other words, I don't want to have a visible hit counter on the webpage
itself. I want to have a different webpage that will show me the number.

OT: CreekFM - Fifty Thousand Watts of Pow Wow Power!

You may recall that in the early months of 2009 I was asking some
questions about setting up a streaming audio server for a native-owned
radio station.

It is now up and running, and you're welcome to tune in.

95.3 CreekFM
Serving the File Hills First Nations, and the World!

CreekFM is owned and operated by the Okanese First Nation on their
reserve near Balcarres, Saskatchewan, Canada.

It is the only native-owned and operated radio station in Saskatchewan.

<a href="" title=""></a>

The webserver runs Apache on Centos 5.

Firefox spelling checker

I just noticed that since the last updates, Firefox no longer does the
automatic spelling checking thing in text boxes.

I'm sure that it used to work and I'm not sure exactly when it stopped.

I just tried it on two different up-to-date Centos 5 machines with the
same results.

"Check my spelling as I type" is set.

geany 0.19.1 rpms

I have posted Centos rpms for the latest version (0.19.1) of the Geany
programmer's editor here:

<a href="" title=""></a>

i386, x86-64 and src.rpm are available.

0.19.1 is a bugfix release, details here:
<a href="" title=""></a>

The last time I posted a geany announcement on this mailing list, there
was a substantial spike in the number of people who downloaded it so
apparently there are a lot of people here who use geany.

If you're a programmer and haven't tried geany yet, do yourself a favour
and try it out.

firefox youtube cookie fix

I keep the "accept cookies from sites" option un-checked in my Firefox
preferences and maintain a (short) list of websites that I allow cookies

Even though I have "allow for session" set for <a href="" title=""></a>, it still
comes up with "An error occurred" when I try to play a video.

freetype bytecode interpreter

It may yet be too early to get a definite answer about this, but I'm
wondering what the status of the formerly patented bytecode interpreter
in freetype will be in RHEL/Centos 6 and possibly future updates to
RHEL/Centos 5.

The patent on the technology has apparently now expired.
<a href="" title=""></a> and
<a href="" title=""></a>

Effective with freetype 2.4 the technology will enabled by default at
the freetype website. I just checked and the version in the RHEL 6 beta
appears to be 2.3.11

Fedora 11 openvpn

Does anyone know of any problems regarding Fedora 11 and openvpn?

Here is his description of the issue:

I think that I have misconfigured something on our LAN.

The intended configuration:
- there are a couple of class-C subnets which are all connected
via our VPN (openvpn).

dhclient fedora11 x86_64

I just received this inquiry from my brother:

Are you aware of any issues which might cause one of our
machines (intel core2 duo, if it matters) to lose it IP
address every few hours?

The problem is that dhclient seems to hang such that,
to recover the machine, I need to kill off dhclient and
run a new one.

For the moment, I wrote a small cron script to kill dhclient
and run a new copy....this seems like a crude approach...and
should have been unnecessary to boot.
