zenity issue with latest Centos 7 update

zenity --width 800 --entry

The window width comes out at 800 as expected, but the bar to type your entry into extends only about 1/4 of the way across the window, instead of all the way across like it did before I did the v1708 update.

I'm using Centos 7 with Mate.

Centos 5.7, I10 video, 1920x1080 monitor

I have a Centos 5.7 machine with Intel I10 video (built-in, I guess -- this is
one of those all-in-one mini terminal things) that I'm trying to put a new
1920x1080 monitor onto, without conspicuous success. Prior to this it's been
using a smaller monitor with no issues.

Try as I might I can't get the new monitor to run at its 1920x1080 resolution.
I just realized that I forgot to write down the actual resolution that it runs
at but it's less than it should be, maybe 1280x1024?

c6-cr kernel update -- joystick enabled?

Does the new kernel in the Centos 6 cr repository have the joystick enabled
again, or is the rpm from elrepo still required to use one?

smartd and palimpsest

I notice that the smartd service is not running by default on a new
installation. But palimpsest seems to get updated statistics every so often as
when I check the statistics on a drive it says "last updated" some number of
minutes ago.

So if smartd isn't running, where does palimpsest get its information from and
what is updating it?

Second question, what would enabling the smartd service gain me that I don't
have right now?

Gimp PDF plugin - Centos 5

Gimp on Centos 5 has somehow lost its ability to load a pdf file on three (i386)
different computers. I'm pretty sure that this used to work.

When I try to load a PDF file I get the initial box titled "Load Postscript"
with rendering and antialiasing options, but when I hit OK I get an error
message: Opening "filename" failed: Plug-In could not open image."

Comparing between Centos 5 and Centos 6 I see that I have a file named file-pdf
in the gimp plugins directory on Centos 6 x86_64 (/usr/lib64/gimp/2.0/plug-ins)
but that file is not preset on the Centos 5 boxes..

Gnome System Monitor crashes on Centos 6 x86_64

Has anyone else had this problem?

Clearlooks & Bluecurve icons missing from Centos 6

The Clearlooks and Bluecurve icon directories that were provided
under Centos 5 that have disappeared on Centos 6. Clearlooks icons were
provided by gnome-themes-2.16.0-1.fc6 and has disappeared with
gnome-themes-2.28.1-6.el6.noarch, and Bluecurve icons were provided by
redhat-artwork-5.1.0-28.el5.centos, which doesn't appear to exist at all with
Centos 6.

Were these icons removed for a reason?

shared cups printers disappeared

I have two computers, one with a HP printer on it and one with a Samsung
printer on it.

Both systems have their respective pritnters listed under
system-config-printer and have "enabled" "accepting jobs" and "shared" checked.

Up to a few days ago this worked fine. Suddenly I can't see either printer
from the other machine and as far as I know nothing has changed other than the
usual "yum update" stuff that has come in over the past few days.

thumbnail cache

This webpage tells me that you can set the thumbnail cache size using
gconf-editor:

<a href="http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1481182" title="http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1481182">http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1481182</a>

However, the gconf-editor that I have on Centos 5.5 doesn't have that setting.

Is it not possible to set this value with Centos 5.5?

Terminal with variable sized font

Using gnome-terminal and the like, you can set the font size that you want and
then if you drag the window larger or smaller, you get more or less character
per line.

Is there a terminal that allows you to set the rows and columns that you want
and then resizes the text instead?

logrotate.d - reload vs restart

Looking at some of the stuff in /etc/logrotate.d, I see entries like this in
some of the configuration files:

postrotate
/sbin/service privoxy reload 2> /dev/null || true

# /sbin/service privoxy reload 2> /dev/null || true
Usage: /etc/init.d/privoxy {start|stop|restart}

Changing reload to restart does work:

]# /sbin/service privoxy restart 2> /dev/null || true
Stopping Privoxy, OK.
Starting Privoxy, OK.

I find "reload" in the httpd logrotate file as well:

postrotate
/sbin/service httpd reload > /dev/null 2>/dev/null || true

What am I

simple website hit counter

Googling for this finds me a ton of stuff that doesn't actually do what I'm
looking for.

I want a simple hit counter cgi script of some kind that will increment a
counter on every page load but I want to access the counter from a different
page.

In other words, I don't want to have a visible hit counter on the webpage
itself. I want to have a different webpage that will show me the number.

OT: CreekFM - Fifty Thousand Watts of Pow Wow Power!

You may recall that in the early months of 2009 I was asking some
questions about setting up a streaming audio server for a native-owned
radio station.

It is now up and running, and you're welcome to tune in.

CHXL
95.3 CreekFM
FIFTY THOUSAND WATTS of POW WOW POWER!
Serving the File Hills First Nations, and the World!

CreekFM is owned and operated by the Okanese First Nation on their
reserve near Balcarres, Saskatchewan, Canada.

It is the only native-owned and operated radio station in Saskatchewan.

<a href="http://www.creekfm.com" title="www.creekfm.com">www.creekfm.com</a>

The webserver runs Apache on Centos 5.

Firefox spelling checker

I just noticed that since the last updates, Firefox no longer does the
automatic spelling checking thing in text boxes.

I'm sure that it used to work and I'm not sure exactly when it stopped.

I just tried it on two different up-to-date Centos 5 machines with the
same results.

"Check my spelling as I type" is set.

geany 0.19.1 rpms

I have posted Centos rpms for the latest version (0.19.1) of the Geany
programmer's editor here:

<a href="http://www.melvilletheatre.com/articles/el5/index.html" title="http://www.melvilletheatre.com/articles/el5/index.html">http://www.melvilletheatre.com/articles/el5/index.html</a>

i386, x86-64 and src.rpm are available.

0.19.1 is a bugfix release, details here:
<a href="http://www.geany.org/Documentation/ReleaseNotes" title="http://www.geany.org/Documentation/ReleaseNotes">http://www.geany.org/Documentation/ReleaseNotes</a>

The last time I posted a geany announcement on this mailing list, there
was a substantial spike in the number of people who downloaded it so
apparently there are a lot of people here who use geany.

If you're a programmer and haven't tried geany yet, do yourself a favour
and try it out.

firefox youtube cookie fix

I keep the "accept cookies from sites" option un-checked in my Firefox
preferences and maintain a (short) list of websites that I allow cookies
from.

Even though I have "allow for session" set for <a href="http://www.youtube.com" title="www.youtube.com">www.youtube.com</a>, it still
comes up with "An error occurred" when I try to play a video.

freetype bytecode interpreter

It may yet be too early to get a definite answer about this, but I'm
wondering what the status of the formerly patented bytecode interpreter
in freetype will be in RHEL/Centos 6 and possibly future updates to
RHEL/Centos 5.

The patent on the technology has apparently now expired.
<a href="http://freetype.sourceforge.net/patents.html" title="http://freetype.sourceforge.net/patents.html">http://freetype.sourceforge.net/patents.html</a> and
<a href="http://apple.slashdot.org/story/10/07/19/1524250/FreeType-Project-Cheers-TrueType-Patent-Expiration" title="http://apple.slashdot.org/story/10/07/19/1524250/FreeType-Project-Cheers-TrueType-Patent-Expiration">http://apple.slashdot.org/story/10/07/19/1524250/FreeType-Project-Cheers...</a>

Effective with freetype 2.4 the technology will enabled by default at
the freetype website. I just checked and the version in the RHEL 6 beta
appears to be 2.3.11

Fedora 11 openvpn

Does anyone know of any problems regarding Fedora 11 and openvpn?

Here is his description of the issue:

I think that I have misconfigured something on our LAN.

The intended configuration:
- there are a couple of class-C subnets which are all connected
via our VPN (openvpn).

dhclient fedora11 x86_64

I just received this inquiry from my brother:

Are you aware of any issues which might cause one of our
machines (intel core2 duo, if it matters) to lose it IP
address every few hours?

The problem is that dhclient seems to hang such that,
to recover the machine, I need to kill off dhclient and
run a new one.

For the moment, I wrote a small cron script to kill dhclient
and run a new copy....this seems like a crude approach...and
should have been unnecessary to boot.

Failures upgrading two completely different machines from F11 to F10

I have two machines that I want to upgrade and both have been failures.

FAILED UPGRADE ONE: (Intel i7-940 desktop)
First, my desktop machine. (This one.) I ran preupgrade again tonight without
changing anything from my earlier attempts when it didn't find Fedora 12, and
suddenly Fedora 12 was available. Great! It went through all of the
downloading and everything else, then when it got to the end it told me that I
had insufficient disk space in /boot.

samsung m800

My cell phone was dying so I got a shiny new Samsung M800 to replace it.

This phone browses the web, takes pictures, makes coffee and puts the cat out;
my old phone was pretty much just a phone.

I hooked it up to my computer and got this in /var/log/messages:

Nov 17 22:33:06 mutt kernel: VendorID=8086h, DeviceID=340ah, Bus=00h,
Device=03h, Function=00h
Nov 17 22:33:12 mutt kernel: usb 7-2: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd
and address 2
Nov 17 22:33:13 mutt kernel: usb 7-2: New USB device found, idVendor=04e8,
idProduct=6640
Nov 17 22:33:13 mutt kernel: usb 7-2: New USB device string

f12 preupgrade?

I just cranked up preupgrade on this F11 computer and was told "no releases
available for upgrade".

Sigh...

man 3 switch

I just discovered that "man 3 switch" is missing.

Is it supposed to be there or is there some reason for it to not be?

X86 performance monitoring

My brother just sent me this inquiry and I thought I would ask here to see if
any of you lot know anything about this before I send him a reply.

Just checking whether you know anything about the various packages
I could use to monitor performance of code running on X86 processors.
I want to measure things like:
- instructions executed, in a block of code (ie., from here to there)
- cache misses (i-cache, d-cache, L1, L2, etc)
- processor cycles
- SSE4 instructions executed
- ...

terminal emulation problem, or a screwup on my part?

Running the following code in gnome-terminal, I get this when I press 7 on my
keypad:

27 33
91 133
49 61
126 176

I can't capture the keypad home key. If I hit the dedicated home key (between
the keypad and the letter keys, I get this:

Home hit
262 406

So that works.

Running the following code in xterm, I get this:

Home hit
262 406

Which is working.

But no matter how I set numlock, I can't get KEY_A1 on either gnome-terminal or
xterm.

Same story with end, pgup and pgdn.

Am I doing something wrong or is there something wrong with the terminal
emulation (or ncurses)?

Evince "home directory"

When I open a document from Evince (File-Open) I always get a window that says
this:

"The folder contents could not be displayed Error stating file
'/home/frankcox/Documents': No such file or directory

I don't have a directory called Documents.

Is the default directory name hard-coded into Evince? I can't find any way to
change it to a directory that I actually do have so I won't see this error
message every time.

I could put a symbolic link named Documents in my home directory but I don't
really want to...

non-resizable gnome-terminal

Does anyone know how to create a non-resizable gnome-terminal? The --geometry
parameter allows me to set the initial size of the terminal but it can still be
resized afterward.

Files dragged onto desktop don't show up

I just noticed that when I drag a file out of a Nautilus window and put it on
my desktop, the icon disappears. If I then click on Desktop in my Nautilus
window, the icon shows up on my desktop.

This is using Fedora 11/Gnome. Does anyone else see this behaviour?

I'm sure this didn't happen a little while back. When sorting out files using
Nautilus I am in the habit of putting them on my desktop temporarily and the
icons always used to appear immediately, exactly where I set them down. The
icons still appear exactly where I set them down, but I have to go to Desktop
with Nautilus first.

Intel DX58S0 (i7) motherboard and pci=nommconf

I asked about this the other day with no response so I'll bring it up again,
and include some detail that may be useful to others.

This computer is has an Intel i7-940 CPU and a DX58S0 motherboard. I have
updated it to the latest bios that's available from Intel's website.

With the default Fedora 11 installation, it will hang up on a warm boot. When
it boots normally it shows a quick "Intel" splash screen, the Grub, then loads
Fedora 11.

pci=nommconf

What does pci=nommconf actually do and/or change? What is "lost" when you use
pci=nommconf?

All I've been able to dig up about this tells me that mmconf is used for memory
mapped space, and pci=nommconf disables that for pci.

Which doesn't really leave me feeling any better informed......
