CentOS7 gnome apps look in Mate

Hello there,

using CentOS7 with Mate desktop.. when I run gnome apps, the mate look
doesn't apply to them. Say that my mate theme is dark. I've even logged
in my user in Gnome, set a dark theme too. But back to Mate, Gnome apps
are still light-grey (default theme). Is there a gnome-settings daemon
to start or what?

Tk and Qt apps get the right (dark) theme automagically, BTW.

Acroread9 crash in CentOS7

Hello,

I'm getting a crash with acroread on my CentOS7 (AdobeReader_enu-9.5.5-1.i486).
I install the official rpms from <a href="ftp://ftp.adobe.com/pub/adobe/reader/unix/" title="ftp://ftp.adobe.com/pub/adobe/reader/unix/">ftp://ftp.adobe.com/pub/adobe/reader/unix/</a>,
tried 9.5.5, and former v9, v8, v7.

/usr/bin/acroread loads well, but when you click a menu, bang.

centos7: looking for libwebpdemux

Hello there,

I'm looking for libwebpdemux.so, possibly 0.4.x. I had it installed on
my CentOS6, from EPEL, but now on CentOS7, EPEL doesn't provide it at
all. Anybody knows about it? Maybe a rpm rebuild would do it?

What RH-like on a Dell XPS 15 (9590)?

Hello there,

I've just got a Dell XPS 15 (9590) at work and need to set up a stable
GNU/Linux system on it. I thought of CentOS7, but.. obviously its
kernel can't run on this hardware.

What would you recommend? Waiting for CentOS8 is not an option unless
it's a question of few weeks. Are there respins of the CentOS7 DVDs w/
more top-recent kernels? I'm know of Fedora 26 or course, and not
willing to switch to Ubuntu 16.10 at all.

CentOS 6: cannot open gnome-session

Hello there,

trying to open Session settings in GNOME's System/Preferences, I get
this error:

=====
Error opening current splash image.

The current splash image filename is:
/usr/share/pixmaps/splash/gnome-splash.png
=====

I get this exact same error on 2 different CentOS 6 systems
(up-to-date).
On both systems, /usr/share/pixmaps/splash/ does not exist.

Did anybody already face that issue?

Creating the missing file (out of any .png) doesn't solve the problem:
I don't get the error anymore but the Session setting never open.

CentOS6: devhelp search misses most of GTK+ 2 API functions

Hello there,

a long-standing issue I have here and that I'm decided to get rid of
now: in the devhelp, most of the GTK+ functions are not found by the
search tab: it will find gtk_icon fonctions but no gtk_widget or
gtk_color_button, gtk_label etc. Also, it will find GtkVbox item but no
gtk_vbox_new, GtkWidget but no gtk_widget function, for instance.

The docs are there (gtk-doc, gtk2-devel-docs), since I can find all
those API elements by browsing the GTK+ 2 Reference Manual from the
Contents tab.

Is this really how it should be?

Mingw gcc 6.x on CentOS6?

Hello there!

I'm stuck here on my CentOS6 w/ current EPEL's version of mingw32/64 gcc
(4.9.2), jealous about the Ubuntu's 5.3.0 version and even more jealous
about Fedora 24's top-recent 6.1.0.. and now I need msvcr120.dll
compatibility (provided by gcc 6.1.0).

Has anybody any experience w/ recompiling Fedora's 24 mingw RPMs or
another way to get the latest gcc cross-compiler from mingw on such
CentOS6? Any advice?

Hello there,

CentOS6.7 64-bit up-to-date running on my laptop.. This night I had to
restart (did it properly).

Bonding wired and wireless ifaces

Hello all,

I'm wondering if there's any interest in trying to bond em1 and eth0
(respectively wired and wireless interfaces here), and if any, how to
do it in CentOS6.

I've found this, which could possibly help (but I'm failing yet):
<a href="http://r.outlyer.net/linux:bonding" title="http://r.outlyer.net/linux:bonding">http://r.outlyer.net/linux:bonding</a>
<a href="https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuBonding" title="https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuBonding">https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuBonding</a>
Both are dealing w/ ifenslave.

Any experience or point of view on this topic?

For now, and without any change to the CentOS network config, I have my
wired and wireless ifaces up at the same time, same IP (thanks for the
DHCP config running on my router), but apparently only

Broadcom BCM4313 support broken with kernel 2.6.32-573.7.1.el6.centos.plus.x86_64?

Hello,

I noticed that with latest kernel (2.6.32-573.7.1.el6.centos.plus.x86_64),
my laptop's Wifi doesn't work, whereas with previous kernel
(2.6.32-504.30.3.el6.centos.plus.x86_64), it works fine.

Is this a known issue or did I miss something new?

BTW, `lspci` says:

linux on a PPC (mac mini)

Hello there,

complete off-topic, sorry about this, but my former idea was to install
a CentOS on an old mac mini (PPC!). Disappointed to see that PowerPC is
not a supported architecture and that non ARM or Intel architecture are
not managed by recent distros.. :-(.

Searching the web, I see very few possibilities to install a recent (I
need gnome2) GNU/Linux distro on such hardware.

CentOS6: ntfs-3g and writing utf-8 filenames

Hello there,

I know this has been widely discussed over the net, but I still can't
find a way to write a file whose name contains accented characters in ntfs-3g
partitions that are automatically mounted on my CentOS6 system.

Whatever my locale is POSIX, en_US or en_US.utf8, I always get a:

Invalid or incomplete multibyte or wide character

error when I attempt to create a directory or a file when the name
contains an accented char.

I tried remounting manually the ntfs-3g partition using -o utf8 (and
older variants: iocharset= and nls=), but it doesn't work better.

My ntfs-3g disks are

Red Hat Developer Toolset 3 for CentOS6?

Hi all,

I could find the 1.1 and 2 repos gently provided by Tru Huynh, but quid
of a v3 of the toolset?

I've just found that Qt 5.4 requires what's shipped in this v3 (gcc
4.9.1, binutils 2.24) and would prefer installing those from a repo. If
not, the sources will rule.

Any hint?

NTFS-3g from EPEL doesn't work here, older one from PUIAS does

Hello there,

here on my CentOS 6 (up-to-date), since a recent update of the NTFS
modules to ntfs-3g-2014.2.15-6 from EPEL repo, mounting my NTFS
partitions simply doesn't work ("NTFS signature is missing").

Back to puias' 2011.4.12-5.puias6 and it works again. Such issue
observed on several CentOS systems, while upgrading to 6.6.

Did I miss something? I browsed the web and RH's bug tracker but found
nothing yet.

Upgrade to CentOS6.6: mpich dep error

CentOS6: sound prefs, how to limit output volume to the un-amplified range?

Hello there,

recently installed CentOS6 on a (quite old) 64-bit system, and from the
GNOME's sound preference app, I can see that the Output volume range is
said "amplified" from 63% to 100%. Below 63% it's unamplified.

No idea what's implied behind this amplification (I don't see this on
other desktops), but I notice that when "amplified" the sound is pretty
bad (at 100% and above, it's ridiculously bad). Below 63% it's simply
very good and from far, loud enough.

I wonder if there's a way to make the amplified range (63-100+)
inaccessible?

CentOS to reside near a NTFS system

Hello there,

the *old* PC (Turion 64 MT-32 800MHz, 1Gb RAM) of my gf is running
Windows XP, and I plan on installing a CentOS beside of it, allowing
her to select the OS at boot-time. Other system/OS installing options
are not retained, please avoid ;-).

My first attempt was to install the CentOS7 GNOME-Live on a USB
flashdisk and to boot it on the machine. It was either freezing at grub
stage (!?) or later at GDM login stage. I gave up.

Then I installed the CentOS6 LiveCD on the USB flashdisk, and booted in
on the machine.

How to enable sound for other users but the one who owns the current session

Hello there!

I'm trying to get sound from applications running from other users bug
the one who owns the current GNOME sessions.

Typically, my default user is "A" and he's running the GNOME session,
logged in graphically. From this session, I open terminals, su to other
users (B or C, non-root) and run mplayer or firefox. No sound for these.

Adding those users to the "audio" group didn't help. Any idea how to do
this?

Upgrade to CentOS 6.5 -> issue with Broadcom Wifi

Hello there!

I was running CentOS 6.4 system on my Dell Latitude E6530 flawlessly,
until I upgraded to CentOS 6.5.

Now the wifi doesn't show up (it's a Broadcom Wifi BT4313, 14e4:4727), I
tried to follow the steps from <a href="http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/Laptops/Wireless/Broadcom" title="http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/Laptops/Wireless/Broadcom">http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/Laptops/Wireless/Broadcom</a>
but when attempting to compile the Broadcom driver module, the make
command fails in a way that is not described on this web page.

audio tagtool vs recent glibc update

Hello there,

is it me or a recent glibc update in CentOS6 did break audio tagtool?
It now shows utf8 conversion errors and crashes. A rebuild from the
sources didn't help.

skype not starting anymore, prelink issue?

Hello there!

I was running skype 4.1.0.20 on my 64-bit laptop for weeks (installed
in /opt, from an official skype binary archive, plus few 32-bit stuff
to get it working), when suddenly it stopped working, no way to start
it:

$ skype
Fatal: QWidget: Must construct a QApplication before a QPaintDevice
Aborted

A quick search on the Internet brought some possible solution,
basically configuring prelink to skip skype binary, uninstall skype,
reinstall it. I was doubtful about uninstall/reinstall step since I
didn't install it using a RPM but from a binary archive.

E17 on CentOS6?

Hello there,

does anyone have experience setting up Enlightenment E17 on a CentOS6
system?

I know that the RPM's are available from:

but don't have a single clue about how to switch from my GNOME desktop
to it once installed.

Recent kernel update vs usb disk

Hello there,

since kernel update 2.6.32-220.4.1.el6, one of my USB external SATA
drives is not mounting.

Eeek, my centos6 box won't boot after broken update, need help w/ yum

Hello there,

I think I've shutdown my box right in the middle of a yum update.. The
latest kernel installed won't simple boot, and the old one can, but
only in init 3 mode (tty).

From a console, I wanted to complete the yum update and it suggested me
to do a `yum-complete-transaction`.

yum-complete-transaction tells me that 447 elements are left to run in 1
transaction, runs and show lots of "Removing <packagename> - ud from
the transaction" then processes lots of stuff, and ends with listing
lots of duplicate packages (mostly Xorg stuff) and..

CentOS6 KDE: Desktop Activity type: desktop only

Write to USB pendrives horribly slow

Hello there,

since I installed CentOS6 few months ago (kept up-to-date using yum),
I'm facing very poor performances when writing to USB pendrives.

The hardware: a Dell Latitude E6500 laptop (Intel Core Duo P8600
@2.40Ghz), 4Go RAM + 4Go swap, several USB2 pendrives of various brands
(less than old, all formatted as vfat).

When I perform a copy (with cp or midnight commander, copying big AVI
files between 300Mo to 1.4Go) to those devices, whatever the source is
on the same device or on another disk, I notice that the CPU activity
shows 2 phases as far as I can see with the Gnome system mo

hal, gnome.. custom mount options for vfat storage devices

Hello there,

w/ my CentOS6 (up-to-date), running GNOME, I'm struggling with HAL and
mount options for my USB storage devices.

According to what I'm reading from:
<a href="http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/blfs/view/svn/general/hal.html" title="http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/blfs/view/svn/general/hal.html">http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/blfs/view/svn/general/hal.html</a>
My old policies in /etc/hal/fdi/policy/ are ignored (and this is true!).
Apparently I should edit my custom mount options through gconf-editor
(in /system/storage/default_options/vfat/mount_options) but whatever I
set here or in /usr/share/hal/fdi/policy/10osvendor, I see definitely
no effect to mount options.

Roughly, I'm trying to force mount options like storage l

Perl package problems too (different)

Hello there,

since yersterday, there's a massive update ready for my CentOS 6 (kept

persistent custom lines in /etc/hosts?

Hello there,

I've edited /etc/hosts to add few custom IP/hostnames couples.
After each reboot, I have to add them again. I've then
added /etc/sysconfig/network/hosts, but it seems to ignore it or at
least ignore 127.0.0.1 assignments I'm doing in it.

Is there a mechanism I'm not aware of, or doing things wrong to make my
custom IP/hostnames assignments permanent after network services
restart?

libxml for CentOS6?

Hello there,

I'm struggling w/ my Canon Pixma iP1600 printer on a 64bit CentOS.
I've installed all the necessary 32bit rpms to make use of the 32bit
IP2200 driver found on Canon's side, but I'm missing libxml v1
(recompiling a src.rpm fails on at link against -lxml).

I could not find a libxml package for CentOS6.. does anyone know a
source where I could find it? It's not available from epel, atrpms,
rpmforge, puias, remi.
