Re: How to coordinate the clock when dual-booting with Windows

NTP is probably assuming system clock is UTC and correcting based on your time zone settings. This way ntp can assume all clocks are UTC and not have figure out all the relevant time zone corrections.

Does this make sense for your time zone?

Remote users can set their time zone environment variables for their local time zone. Things work out nicely on Unix or Linux based systems.

I don't know If there is a right way to configure Windows so it knows the hardware clock is UTC and the user time zone is different.

Re: no space left on /boot

Another approach would be boot from one of the many forensic or data recovery distributions and increase the size of your boot partition at the expense of a little space in your root partition.

Reinstalling 10.04

I know it's way out of date, but I need an application that doesn't run on
12.04. They are supposed to be back on track by 14.04.

It was installed as a dual boot w/ Windows XP with Ubuntu inside the
Windows ntfs partition. But, I can't find my way to this option in the
10.04 installer. I know I have stumbled into it in the past and used it.
But now the closest I can get (sometimes) is to install them side by side,
but this wants to resize the existing ntfs partition, but fails.
Fortunately it doesn't trash the existing ntfs partition.

Partitioning SDHC Card?

The last time I paid attention there was a lot of voodoo involved in
formatting and partitioning SD cards without adversely impacting the
performance and life expectancy of the card. It dealt with block sizes and
alignment of sectors, etc. Aligning the file system with the underlying SD
card hardware, so that for a filesystem write doesn't require reading a
physical hardware block updating the last half of it, reading the next
hardware block and updating the first half of it.

Do we still need to worry about this sort of thing (if so please point me
to the appropriate incantations).

Unity Argghhh!!!

I gave it a try in 11.04 and found it UNUSABLE.

In 11.10 it's better, but it hides the applications menus and replaces them
with a subset of the menus, which makes it UNUSABLE!

Bad video settings durning boot

This is on a natty box.

While the system is booting the video starts out being displayed normally
while the bios is in control. Then it switches to some inappropriate
setting that my display is unable to handle. Once the system comes up the
xorg.conf results in nice working video.

Most the time this is just an annoyance. But if something doesn't go quite
right during the boot. I'm blind and can't see the console output. Often
in this case the situation would be trivial if I could see.

I probably just need a magic incantation somewhere.

Natty: nvidia driver as activated but not currently in use

Some of them claim to have solved it.
But so far none of the solutions have worked for me.

Trouble window list on dual monitor

I have a netbook with a tiny screen and a nice big external display. They
are successfully running gnome in a dual monitor configuration on an up to
date Maverick install.

I have a Window List applet running in a panel at the top of the netbook
screen. If I open a new window on the netbook, it appear in the window it
appears in the window list applet as expected. But if I drag the window to
the big screen. It disappears from the window list. And if I minimize a
window on the big screen, then it's lost forever, and I have not been able
to recover it. If I reboot.

Audiobook players

I would like a pair of them that play nice with each other. I'd like to be
able to listen on any device supported by ubuntu or android. Then easily
create a placemark, and resume listening at the same place on any other
supported device. The abilities to easily reposition a placemark, name
place marks, save place marks, and restore placemarks would be icing on the
cake.

Screen too small for popups

Anybody know of anything that intercepts popup windows and wraps
scroll bars around them if they don't fit on the screen. My netbook
is a pain to use sometimes. Haven't tried maverick yet maybe it is
better.

GDM could not write to you authorization file ... Please contact your system adminstrator

I am the system administrator.

I have a system that was built with a default install which resulted
in everything in a single file system except for /boot

wrote some scripts to split out: /home, /usr, /var, /opt, and /tmp to
separate file systems/logical volumes it looks like it ought to work,

There's plenty of space in all the filesystems and I can log via ssh
and have write access in my home directory.

sata AHCI controllers (real and virtual)

I saw something somewhere about AHCI support requiring kernel 2.6.19 or later.
But the current CentOS/RHEL stable kernels are 2.6.18

I'm trying to run CentOS/RHEL in a VirtualBox vm, which by default creates sata
virtual disks with an AHCI virtual controller.

These virtual machines are quite unstable, and I'm wondering if the AHCI virtual
controller is the problem.

I do have a real physical AHCI controller and I'm wondering if I
should try it on
a CentOS/RHEL 5.5 box, or if I should wait for RHEL/CentOS 6, before even
attempting it.

Network Manager Applet disappeared

Until recently it's been hanging out inside the Notification Area applet.

My panel still has the Notification Area applet, but it's empty!

This is on a Lucid box, a google search says the Notification Area
went away in Lucid.
But it was there and functioning the last time I noticed. But not now!

I've rebooted, it didn't help.

At the moment I want the Network Manager applet to bring up a vpn connection.

Hmm.

sata problems

Hi,

I have a Sans Digital TRA4M external 4bay sata drive enclosure.

With a SiL 3132 one lane pci-e adapter.

It connects using a single esata cable, there is a sata port multiplier in
the enclosure

I see lots of people having trouble getting the ubuntu to recognize all the
drives.
I realize the bios reports only one drive, but with a current kernel all the
drives
are accessible. I can mount filesystems on all the drives.

I'd like to get a bluetooth headset working with a music player and google

vgrename, lvrename

Hi,

I want to rename some volume groups and logical volumes.

I was not surprised when it would not let me rename active volumes.

So I booted up the system using the CentOS 5.5 LiveCD,
but the LiveCD makes the logical volumes browsable using Nautilus,
so they are still active and I can't rename them.

Tried:

/usr/sbin/lvchange -a n VolGroup00/LogVol00

but it still says:

LV VolGroup00/LogVol00 in use: not deactivating

Did some googling and found out that other folks have had
problems with mkinitrd, but I haven't gotten that far yet.

I was testing a new Engenius ESR-1221 router/access point.

I was able to connect to the router with the browser,

it didn't work.

Did a: netstat -nr

Hmm. No default route.

Grandfather clock 1.0.2-4

Doesn't work!

So is it possible to find and try 1.0.2-6. or is it pointless.

Lucid Window List applet

I have the Window List applet 2.30.2 installed in a panel on a lucid box.

Sometimes (I have not yet figured out what triggers it) all the windows
disappear from the panel.
They are still there. They are just invisible. If I click on the correct
place in the panel, then a window will maximize/minimize just the way it is
supposed to.

Any ideas?

nvidia cuda

I have a fairly nice box built from recycled components.

I would like to run some off the shelf gpu code: boinc and/or mythtv.

I really don't want to spend any money, or a lot of time working on this
box.

At first glance it seems a GeForce 8 or better card is required, but the
release
notes for the 256.35 nvidia driver (available as nvidia-current from the

saying that cuda is supported on the: G73 [GeForce 7600 GS]

But I could be reading that all wrong.

Anyway 256.35 is running on my stock 2.6.32-24-generic, but boi

sun-java version issues

I had sun-java6 installed from the repositories on a lucid box. Then I
discovered an application I really need doesn't work with anything newer
than some java5 release. I did a "Complete Removal" of all the sun-java6
packages, but I am wondering if there are any other dregs of the sun-java6
installs that need to be cleaned out before installing an older version from
Oracle.

Karmic Time in wrong zone

Clock 2.28.0 is in the panel

Right clicking on the applet,
brings up the configuration
shows my location as:

Albuquerque America/Denver

which is correct, but the time it
is displaying is 2 hours later.

typing date at the command line
shows the same time, but it is EDT
which is consistent with the correct
time displayed on the command line
and in the applet.

Another quirk is that the show temperature
and weather boxes are checked but nothing
is displayed in the applet.

Typed an env command, but didn't see anything
relevant in the environment variables.

Installed Chrome on Lucid

For some reason it does not appear in the Gnome

Applications -> Internet

I can start it by typing:

google-chrome

in a terminal.

Lucid: Title Bar issues

Trying my first Lucid box.

All seemed well at first.

But after a while the Title Bar disappears along with a little bit of stuff
around the edges of the window. To fix it I have to log out and log back
in.

Also every now and then the contents of the window get messed up. Sometimes
most of it just turns white, other times it looks like a horizontal hold
issue on an old fashioned analog tv. Clicking on the Title Bar fixes it.

Networking on my karmic laptop doesn't work any more!!

It worked just fine last night.

First thing I noticed is that web pages are no longer accessible.

Then I looked for the NetworkManager icon in the panel.
It's not there.

I have another partition that boots into a test copy of lucid.
rebooted to that partition.

Karmic and the Birds

Every now and then my karmic box makes bird noises.
A rooster crowing or a flock of birds tweeting for a couple of seconds.
Any idea where to look for where this is coming from, and why,
and how to stop it other than disconnecting the speakers

a2ps

By defautlt, when pretty printing python a2ps switches to a variable
width font, in comments and quoted strings. How do I stop that? I
want it all in a fixed width font.

Odd Panel Problem with Odd Solution

Every now and then my gnome panels break.
All the icons and menus are visible.
But nothing happens when I click on them.
I was tired, not thinking to clearly, when I stumbled on the solution:

rm -rf ~/.mozilla

It solves the problem, but makes no sense to me. And it has undesired
side effects.

The latest episode immediately followed the reboot after installing
the latest karmic kernel upgrade 2.6.31-20,

karmic panels have broken

Upgraded my desktop to karmic a while ago.
After a few configuration issues were resolved
things were working well for a while.

All of a sudden my panels have died, I had two panels at the top of my
desktop.
Everything has disappeared except for a trash icon in the upper right
corner.
The diviision between the panels is missing and I can't add anything to the
panels.
This desktop is very crippled.

What do I don now?
