can XFS filesystem recover rm'ed files?

Yes, I rm'ed the wrong directory. The disk has not been written to since,
now mounted ro. Is it possible to recover the files without doing forensics
on the whole partition? I know the UID and path. XFS is supposed to be
pretty amazing, can I get it to do this?

Thanks,
Dave

why would ls, while or ci use NIS?

I have an entry in root's crontab:

#ls -1 /etc/RCS|sed "s~\(.*\),v~\1~"|while read file; do ls -la

Error output I received:

how to troubleshoot GUI issue?

Hello,
I'm using a recent install of centos 7, no GUI customizations that I
recall. When I log in using the GUI it accepts my password and the mouse
appears on a black screen, like it is preparing the desktop, but the
desktop never appears.

GUI black screen on login, startx works???

Hello,
I'm using a recent install of centos 7, no GUI customizations that I
recall. When I log in using the GUI it accepts my password and the mouse
appears on a black screen, like it is preparing the desktop, but the
desktop never appears.

nfs stuck, don't know what processes to kill

My NFS server is up and other clients can access x. One particular client
can't. I tried to unmount the NFS share:

[root@nfsclient ~]# umount -f /disk/x
umount2: Device or resource busy
umount.nfs: /disk/x: device is busy
umount2: Device or resource busy
umount.nfs: /disk/x: device is busy

If I use df or lsof to try to figure out what process to kill, they hang.

initial setup of centos linux 7 core license information license not accepted

Did all this happen because I switched monitors? Or because I did all my
setup over ssh?

Otherwise, this is an FYI for other newbies who get confused by this like I
did.

Yesterday I set up a new centos 7 install, did updates, made all the config
tweaks I like to make, and rebooted at the end to see if it would start up
properly. No problem.

Centos 7 confusion about Chinese input methods

I just tried my first Centos 7 install. I want to install input methods for
Chinese. In the good old days, all I had to do was yum install a blob and I
was done. Does anyone have a link or some hints that will help me? I did a
search, but the hits just confuse me.
thanks,
Dave

yum causing RPC timed out?

I just installed centos 7, yum is acting strange, experiencing RPC
time-outs. Sometimes when I disable the additional repos (epel and
rpmforge) it seems to make things act normal. But not this time (see below).

Could I have some misconfiguration? Network glitch?

CentOS release 5.3 (Final) yum update error TypeError: unsubscriptable object

Just FYI. This machine has been offline and not updated for several months.
I booted it and ran yum update. It generated an error. I googled the error,
no hits. I did "yum clean all". Tried yum update again, it finished
dependency resolution and reported some missing dependencies.

what to do about [abrt] full crash report kernel taint?

I have a machine with a recent install of centos
(2.6.32-220.2.1.el6.x86_64 kernel). It crashed 3 times this week, and
sent emails like the one below complaining about kernel taint. I've
gone back to a previous kernel to see if that helps, but otherwise I
don't know how to investigate this.

not NetworkManager but dhclient turned off yet clobbered yp.conf on boot

Oops! The actual clue in yp.conf is:

So I was looking in the wrong place.

NetworkManager turned off yet clobbered yp.conf on boot?

A system had a disk problem, I took out the disk, mounted on another
system, tweaked around until I thought the disk problem was fixed, then put
it back in the original system. I did not edit any config files among the
tweaks. When I booted the system, NIS was not working right. I found that
these files had been changed: /etc/yp.conf /etc/resolv.conf /etc/ntp.conf
/etc/auto.master /etc/hosts.allow. A comment in the new bogus yp.conf
indicated it had been created by NetworkManager.

Trying to read Nepali script on centos

I've got Chinese working, but having trouble with Nepali. Here's what
I have installed:

rpm -qa|grep -i nepal
scim-tables-nepali-0.5.6-7
m17n-db-nepali-1.3.3-48.el5

What else is needed?

Thanks

how to install standard software on systems with heterogeneous hardware?

I've been thinking about ways to proceed if I need to set up 5
machines with basically identical software but somewhat variable
hardware. A simple approach would be to just set up my golden system
and clone the disk, but the hardware differences would probably cause
problems.

One approach that appeals to me is to install minimal centos on the
first system, add a few rpms after installation, do my desired config
file tweaks, then somehow generate an rpm that depends on all the
post-install rpms and contains my custom versions of the config files
I tweaked.

Is there a command that knows about my bios?

In our shop we have some software running on the windows boxes that
'audits' the machine. Most of the information is easily (and freely)
duplicated on a linux box (mostly by looking in /proc/cpuinfo
/proc/meminfo, /etc/sysconfig/hwconf, even /etc/X11/xorg.conf|), but
I haven't found anything about bios. Anyone have a clue for me, how to
find out?

The windows program outputs stuff like this about bios:

Dell Inc. A06 SMBIOS 2.4 Date: 4/3/2008

As I was about to send this off I found smbios-sys-info, which fits
the bill.

OT: can DHCP server tell laptop client to not try to update DNS?

I've been looking at the dhcpd.conf man page, there is much info about
how to get DHCP to do DNS updates, but I want to make sure there are
none. I want DHCP server to tell all its clients "don't mess with the
DNS server." Is it possible and if so how?

The guys in charge of our DNS server say that a bunch of our windows
laptops are trying to update the DNS server, which generates lots of
errors in the logs, because they run a pretty static setup.

Cd won't mount normally in fc10

I had trouble mounting a CD on an fc10 system yesterday. I was able to
mount, but only from command line and using /dev/sr0 instead of /dev/cdrom
or whatever. The system managed to change the title of the drive icon
without my help, but not to actually mount the disk.

Is the automounting handled by haldaemon, or autofs, or what? I tried
restarting both those services, no help there. fstab and mtab have nothing
in them about the CD drive.

Is there some message I should be seeing in dmesg or /var/log/messages that
would tell me that what is screwed up?

mahalo,
Dave

old fc8 laptop power management strangeness

I have to use an old laptop running fc8 today. I opened the power
management panel and set it to never go to sleep when on AC power. It
goes to sleep anyhow. Does anyone remember how to make this work in
fc8? HW is dell latitude d410?

I set the "put computer to sleep when inactive for" and "put display
to sleep when inactive for" both to 'never' and set "when lid is
closed' to 'do nothing'. But if I leave it alone for a while it goes
to sleep (logging me out completely) and also if I close the lid.

I'd settle for a way to get it to ask me to authenticate rather than
logging me out.

UTF-8 problem with NTFS support?

I've mounted an external USB hard drive on my fc-10 system.

can't boot fc9 live CD on Optiplex 755

I'm trying to boot the old fc9 live CD on a Dell Optiplex 755. It gets
to the point where X is supposed to start and the screen goes wonky,
apparently crashes. I tried various boot options, e.g.
resolution=640x480 and nomodeset, no help. Can't do dmesg since it
never gets far enough. Ctl alt f1 doesn't give a console.

How can I troubleshoot this?

avahi logging "Invalid legacy unicast query packet" my config?

I'm curious about the following log entries:

Dec 1 13:09:10 x avahi-daemon[2173]: Recieved repsonse with invalid
source port 46404 on interface 'eth0.0'
Dec 1 13:09:13 x avahi-daemon[2173]: Recieved repsonse with invalid
source port 46404 on interface 'eth0.0'
Dec 1 13:22:38 x avahi-daemon[2173]: Invalid legacy unicast query packet.
Dec 1 14:22:38 x avahi-daemon[2173]: Invalid legacy unicast query packet.

Didn't find much about them in the archives of this list. Does this
look more like I have something mis-configured, or like someone is
sending me bogus packets?

how to mount an lvm (thumb) drive?

I have a thumb drive with fedora installed on it. When I plug in the
drive, /boot mounts automatically. fdisk -l shows the root partition
device is LVM. I would like to mount / by hand at another mount point,
but I can't figure out what parameter to give to -t. man mount no
help. man lvm doesn't seem to mention mounting. Googled around, can't
find the answer.

I went to the fedora lvm howto
(<a href="http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/LVM-HOWTO/index.html" title="http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/LVM-HOWTO/index.html">http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/LVM-HOWTO/index.html</a>). It tells you about
11.1. Initializing disks or disk partitions
11.2. Creating a volume group
11.3. Activating a volume group
11.4.

dell gx520 with fc9 won't wake up

I just installed fc9 on a dell gx520, fc6 was on it before and worked
fine. I installed from the live cd, while installing the screen went
to sleep and I could not wake it. I tried again from the beginning and
got through the install, rebooted, turned off services and was doing a
yum install when it again went to sleep and ignores input from mouse &
keyboard. It will ping, but I'd turned off ssh so can't log in that
way.

I googled around and searched the archives, nothing relevant. Or maybe
I'm using the wrong terms.

Any clues you can toss me?

Thanks,
Dave

OT: find command permissions: how to exclude dir?

I have a cron job that runs 'find /' as root, keeps blowing up when
encountering ~/.gvfs in my home dir. Permissions are set like so:

ls -la ~/.gvfs
total 4
dr-x------ 2 tburns isys 0 2008-10-13 07:43 .
drwxr-xr-x 73 tburns root 4096 2008-10-24 11:49 ..

As owner of dir, no problem:
find /users/tburns ! -name .gvfs |grep gvfs

As root, boom:
sudo find /users/tburns ! -name .gvfs |grep gvfs
[sudo] password for tburns:
find: /users/tburns/.gvfs: Permission denied

When I create another similar directory, same permissions, root has no
problem with it.

OT xls2csv date problem?

When I use xls2csv (part of catdoc package) it can't handle dates. -f
switch is supposed to help, but does nothing, results are identical
with/without it.
