Moving on from Council Engineering role

Hello Fedora Friends,

I believe it's time for me to move on from my current role as the
Council Engineering representative. When I resigned from FESCo a bit
ago, I thought I could still fulfill this role. Unfortunately, that
turns out to not be the case. I cannot in good conscience hold a seat
on the Council and be an absentee member.

As we look to the future for Fedora, we need someone with more active
participation to be present.

FESCo Resgination

Hello all

I informed FESCo last week that I resigned from FESCo. They have
since asked that I do it publicly. It has again been an honor to
serve the Fedora community, however I resign effective immediately.

This in no way reflects anything other than my inability to fill the
role in the manner which I believe it requires.

Flock CFP is open!

Hi Devel list!

In case you weren't aware Flock CFP is open! Please start thinking
about your submissions and registration now. The focus this year
should be "do-ing", so there is a general preference for hackfests and
workshops. The Flock committee will send more details on the kind of
submissions they are looking for ASAP, but if you already have an idea
in mind submit it today!

i686 migrated to Alternative Architecture status

Beginning with Fedora 26, the i686 architecture is officially being
migrated to alternative architecture status. This completes a
transition that began with Fedora 24 where i686 was not being
prioritized at a kernel or Edition image level, and that continued
into Fedora 25 where i686 media was no longer blocking or created in
several Editions.

Specifically, i686 will continue to be built in koji as all
architectures are today under the new definitions of Alternative
Architectures [1], and will also still be present in x86_64 media and
repositories for multilib where applicable.

Heads up: issue with Intel microcode update and some Skylake based machines

We've had a rash of reports of kernels not booting on some Skylake based
machines recently. After working these, we've determined that a recent
Intel microcode update somehow conflicts with something in the system
firmware for these machine, causing a complete failure to boot after grub
loads the kernel.

Some of these systems have a firmware update (BIOS/UEFI) that restores
functionality even with the microcode being loaded. Other systems do not
yet at this time.

F24 4.6.y rebase plans

Hi All,

The upstream stable maintainers released kernels 4.5.7 and 4.6.2
yesterday. I thought I would send a brief word about how the rebase
of F24 to 4.6.y will happen.

We'll ship 4.5.7 as the final 4.5.y update and have that available as
the 0-day update for the F24 release on June 14th. That matches the
upstream lifetime of 4.5.y as well, as 4.5.y is no longer supported
after 4.5.7.

Shortly thereafter we'll be rebasing F24 to 4.6.y, most likely
starting with 4.6.3.

Reminder: Flock submission deadline Apr 8

Howdy,

This is a friendly reminder that the Flock submission deadline is less
than a month away, on April 8th 2016. If you have been thinking of
submitting a talk or workshop, now would be a great time to get that
sent in.

The Council is particularly interested in talks that address any of
the current Council Objectives:

https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Objectives

as well as discussions around new Objectives people would like to see.
Of course, innovation happens outside of Fedora itself and we'd love
to hear about that as well.

Large number of packages to be orphaned on Feb 26

Hello,

In today's FESCo meeting, FESCo agreed to orphan all of Christoper
Meng's packages on February 26, 2016 at 17:00 UTC if there was no
further contact from Christopher. Normally we would not necessarily
pre-announce an oprhaning action, however the number of packages in
question is quite large. He is the point of contact for 230 packages.

As a heads up to the greater community, the packages are listed below.
In the event that we have to go through with the orphaning, please
review them for packages you may wish to take over as the primary
point of contact.

4.3 rebase in F23 updates-testing

Hello,

The 4.3.3 kernel has been pushed to updates-testing for F23. As of
right now, it has a +12 karma score. Given that it is a major release
rebase, we're going to wait at least a few days to see how it fares.

If you are so inclined, testing would be appreciated. As usual,
please give karma as appropriate but we would appreciate it if you
only give negative karma for new, not reported issues and with a bug
link associated. If a bug is fixed, we have marked it as such.

kdbus module being removed from Rawhide

Hi All,

We will be removing the kdbus driver from Rawhide kernels before the
4.3 final release upstream. Realistically, this means kdbus will be
gone from Fedora by Monday November 2nd at the latest. If you have a
setup using kdbus, please adjust it accordingly.

The upstream developers asked me to remove the module from Fedora
while they rethink some of the approach they are taking with kdbus.

#topic #1467 F23 Changes - Pr

Validity of i686 as a release blocker

Hello,

Over the past week, we've been dealing with a kernel bug[1] that
prevents i686 machines from booting. Help was requested and given,
and it has been excellent and most welcome. This email has no
reflection on that, and is instead focused on the reality of where
i686 stands today.

In February[2] we sent out an email highlighting that the kernel team
was not going to treat i686 bugs as a priority. Since that time, we
have held true to our word and have not focused on fixing i686 bugs at
all. It seems that the wider community is also treating i686
similarly.

Help needed: F23 32-bit kernel issue

Hello,

There is a report of an issue with the boot.iso and DVD isos not
booting on 32-bit machines/VMs because of a kernel issue [1]. As far
as is known, the issue doesn't happen on 64-bit. It may happen on
32-bit ARM but that is not confirmed as the ARM issue manifests
differently. The bug needs help.

First, it would be good to isolate it to the first kernel that doesn't
work. That narrows down the range of commits to look at for the bug.

Secondly, it would be excellent if someone could commit to spinning
test ISOs when requested.

Fedora Engineering update

Hi Base WG,

As part of the on-going Council updates, I'm organizing a Fedora
Engineering update. This includes the various WGs, rel-eng,
infrastructure, and a few others. The idea behind this is to give a
brief update of the work your group is doing towards the F23 and F24
releases. Think of this as a 5-10 minute "lightning talk" of the
highlights you want to see in those releases.

The meeting is July 7th. It would be excellent if you could have a
volunteer present the update for your group and stay around to answer
any questions.

i686 kernel bug priority plan

Hello Fellow Contributors!

Our kernel team has been adrift in bugs roughly forever. The time we
spend on triage is time we don't get to spend fixing substantial bugs
on hardware lots of people are using, especially new/emergent
hardware. We have spoken previously about the difficulty of kernel bug
triage as a Fedora effort, and also about future kernel direction at
Flock 2014[1].

The Fedora kernel engineers are taking a new approach we think will
result in a better kernel overall.

kernel 4.0-rc1

Hi All,

The upstream kernel bumped the major version to 4.0-rc1 yesterday.
Barring any unforeseen local test failures, the 4.0-rc1 build should
land in the f22/rawhide composes tomorrow. The koji builds will be
available a bit later today.

Most of the userspace issues around the major version number changing
should have been sorted out with the 3.x change 3 years ago. However,
one can never underestimate the short-sightedness of humans so some
things might still pop up. If you are using out of tree drivers
(vbox, nvidia) you might want to pay extra attention.
