Disco Dingo (Final) Ubuntu 64-bit

Hi,

Well, on a different system, with only 19.04 beta on it (which got
overwritten), Disco Dingo behaved fine. Installed OK, only used it for a
spot of web browsing because I am tired.

Disco Dingo (Final) and Fedora 29 (Workspace Edition) - Dell Dimension E520

Hi,

So I had this Dell Tower PC running Fedora 29 WSE. Decided to install Disco
Dingo (Final) - DDF for short - alongside it.

The installer worked OK. The hard drive partitions were rearranged neatly.
All seemed well in the world. Then, suddenly, DDF stopped booting. After a
while I seemed to narrow down the problem to Fedora doing "something" to
the hard drive.

Disco Dingo (19.04) Final Freeze - is it available?

Hi,

Are the above isos available for testing yet - and where are they? Was
hoping to test it this morning but I haven't heard a peep so far.

Petulant Startup Disc Creator [SDC]

Hi,

I was experimenting and decided to make use of a 1GiB USB flash drive, now
that Ubuntu isos won't fit on it.

So I dug out an iso file for dban, the disc wiper. Then I ran isohybrid on
a copy of it. Then I tried to open it from Startup Disc Creator and it
refused to accept the file! No message, just plain stroppiness. Is there a
reason for this?

I know I could use dd but I don't like running it on my main system so that
means transferring things to my 32-bit netbook and using dd on that,
followed by a call to sync.

TIA,

Ian

Debugging bash scripts.

Hi,

I'm looking to have some kind of debugger to debug bash scripts.

bashdb might be suitable but why isn't it in the usual package repositories?

Editing configuration files

Hi All,

What is the preferred way to edit text configuration files that require
root access?

For example, I would normally use emacs to edit /etc/default/grub

Launcher icon size

Hi,

I'd like to decrease the size of Launcher icons on Ubuntu 18.04 to make
room for even more icons. I've looked in settings, looked at Gnome Tweaks
but haven't found anything there.

Also, is there a Gnome extension I could use to get a "start menu" type
menu, to make it easier to browse installed programs?

TIA,

Ian

Desktop brief anomaly

Hi,

Ubuntu has just behaved very strangely. I booted my computer, logged in and
all my desktop icons had disappeared.

I thought that was strange, went into Firefox and started using it.
Suddenly, without warning, I was logged out and facing the login screen.

Logged back in again and the desktop icons were back again and now I'm back
in Firefox, passing on this message.

Webcam videos - kamoso vs cheese

Hi All,

I tried using "kamoso" to record webcam videos. It was unusable. After
_much_ effort installing this or that library, I went to askubuntu.com, it
recommended "cheese" instead.

Ubuntu 18.04 - GNOME - Desktop icon conflict

Hi,

I was testing/using Ubuntu 18.04 when I noticed something odd. I had a few
files on the desktop. I plugged in a USB flash drive and an icon for the
drive appeared on the desktop, That is ok _except_ that the icon was placed
over some existing icons.

I've had a quick look on bugs.launchpad.net and not found anything. Has
this bug been reported before or shall I file a new bug report?

Thank :)

Workspaces on 18.04 LTS

Hi,

In 16.04 I had a 2x2 matrix of 4 workspaces and it was really useful.

In 18.04 I now have a 3x1 matrix of 3 workspaces and it isn't as good. Is
there a way to adjust this to behave like 16.04?

Oh, and I'm going to file a bug report re: 18.04's handling of my HP
LaserJet printer.

Thanks!

Really strange glitch with Ubuntu 16.04.4 LTS 64-bit

Hi,

I hope this is the right place for this kind of message. If it isn't, I
apologise and ask you to direct me to the appropriate mailing list.

I'm running it on a lenovo ThinkPad T420 laptop and have been for years.

Kernel info: Linux turing 4.4.0-121-generic #145-Ubuntu SMP Fri Apr 13
13:47:23 UTC 2018 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Just before logging in, I saw this unexpected error message:
"The system is running in low-graphics mode. Your screen, graphics card,,
and input device settings could not be detected correctly.

Keyboard short-cuts

Hi All,

I particularly like Ubuntu's keyboard short-cuts. Most (if not all) of my
friends at the Tyneside LUG are unaware of them. I was thinking of writing
a mini-article about them for the ACCU's CVu magazine and I was wondering
if there is a page out there that lists them? I know if you hold the
"super/Windows" key, you get a list of some of the short-cuts and was
wondering if they were also listed on a web page.

Thanks :)

Ian
