How to see kernel pr_err error messages.

Im looking at some kernel code, and there are 'pr_err' error messages in
it that would help me discover my problem.

However I dont see them printing anywhere.

What do I have to do to see these error messages?
A search with GOOGLE and a grep of the code wasnt too useful, but
it seems possible that I need to set

#define CONFIG_DEBUG

Is that true? I see a lot of _DEBUGs in the .config file
but no simple CONFIG_DEBUG,

In any case, how do I get these things to print?

What has happened to /etc/mail/statistics ???

Up till last fall I used to receive information about what had gone thru
sendmail from the program /usr/sbin/mailstats from information being
kept in the file /etc/mail/statistics.

Since (an update to sendmail?) last fall, the file /etc/mail/statistics
has been of zero length, but I see no other complaints.

Is there now an option that I must set to get these statistics?
Or possibly new file ownership/mode for the file.

Any thoughts will be appreciated.

Help: trying to load Acrobat on F11/64

Im trying to load Acrobat on Fedora11/64, and I get the error message
that it cant find libBIB.so

Ive tried yum provides with no luck.
Any idea where this library lives?

mcelog error messages.

On 64bit Fedora 11, I see the error message

/etc/cron.hourly/mcelog.cron:

mcelog: warning: record length longer than expected. Consider update.

hourly. Is there an update for the program /usr/sbin/mcelog somewhere???
I see on google that the record length is 88 rather than the expected 72, but
cant confirm that,- when I try to read /dev/mcelog I always see a zero length.

error messages from named.

I have just setup the nameserver (named) in FC11.

During the startup of the nameserver (from init.d), there is the error message:

the working directory is not writable

(I assume this is an error).

stopping named just hangs.

This is not a serious problem, but it is a pain in the neck.
Up until today I ran named in a chroot jail, and when I did a

/etc/rc.d/init.d/named stop

Or when I tried to reboot the system, things hung when we got
to the point of stopping named.

I always assumed this had something to do with the chroot jail,
tho it wasnt clear why this should be a problem.

Today, I reinstalled named, and am running it as a standard process,
no chroot jail.

Same problem, trying to do

/etc/rc.d/init.d/named stop

it still hangs.

So WHY doesnt named honor the 'stop'?

F11 ok, Only 800x600 video with F12.

There are at least two threads active talking about F12 X11 woes.

I dont want to hijack either, but Im having similar problems, so I
will start a third thread, and hope the readers of the other two
will jump in.

With F11 everything is fine, with F12 I only get 800x600 resolution.
I have various Nvidia cards (NV43 - GeForce 6600, NV44 GeForce 6200LE),
various Intel CPUs (Pentium4, Intel Core 2), so the only common variable
is the nvidia drivers nv / nouveau.

Problems with X11 in FC12.

I dont know if these are known problems (with work arounds) but
I see at least two major problems with X11 (and the nouveau driver for Nvidia
cards).

(1) The driver no longer understands <+> and <-> to move
among the definitions on the MODE line.

(2) On two separate systems here, on startup, X11 seems to throw away all MODE
definitions except those within epsilon of 60Hz.

F12 and Nvidia video card.

I see a lot of comments about F12 and Nvidia video card, but no solution to
the problem (if there is one, PLEASE point me at it, Ive just upgraded to F12)

I have a hard time believing that the folks that produce Fedora Releases
would actually release a version that does not support his very common
video card, but that seems to have happened.

So any help?
Does the driver from Nvidia work, I havent checked there yet.

32bit support on 64bit Linux

OK, my bad.
I asked this question before, and someone gave me the answer,
but I forgot to write it down someplace that I could find.

There is a single yum target, that will bring in all (or most) of the 32bit
libraries
and things that are needed to run 32bit applications on 64bit Fedora.

If memory serves, it was a 3character target, but that doesnt help when
I look at my rpm -qa.

Please, what do I have to do to load the 32bit stuff I need in 64bit Linux?
(Im installing a 2nd machine and my memory is blank...)

Fedora12 Release Notes.

What has happened to the concept of release notes that a person could
actually print down and read?

Previous releases have had Release Notes that were mabe 20 pages long, with a
sentence or two about each change.

I looked at the Release Notes for Fedora12, and its a 500page PDF document.
Now thats way longer than I want to print, since I would never read it all, and
there is no way Im going to read more than a page or two of it online.

Between F11 and F12, which would you choose?

I have a half dozen machines updated to F11, and one to F12.
Im wondering if I should update the F11s to F12 or leave well enough alone.

I realize that the F11 distribution has reached a 'stable' status, and
the F12 distribution will probably take a couple more months to reach
that status, but would be interested in hearing what other users have
to say about the pair.

F11 consistent failure to boot after install.

I have not seen this mentioned on this list, but I have just finished
installing
F11 on 5 machines, and these range from an old Pentium 2, up thru a Core2 duo.

In every case, after doing a clean install, the installed image failed to boot
This failure is before any of the grub messages, so it seems to be a bad boot
block.
After a couple of hours of screwing around (sometimes installing an earlier OS
in another partition) I have finally got the damn thing to boot, but I have
NOT seen this problem mentioned on this list.

Is this a known problem?
Is there any simple solution?

Mail Problem.

Im at a loss here.
I have 5 machines, 4 of them (should be) forwarding any mail generated by
scripts to the 5th.
Its not happening.

When I go to the mail machine, my main machine, I can do

telnet localhost 25

and it connects. When I do the same command on the other 4 machines, it can
not connect.
Now Im using my own sendmail.mc nad submit.mc, but have made multiple changes
with
no effect.

WHAT controls the connection to localhost?

And just for completeness, NO there is no firewall running on the machines in
question.

Any help would be appreciated.

Booting issues with F11

I am having real problems.
I have had one machine with F11 on it, and decided to bring all of my 'older'
machines up to F11.

In each case ( 32bit or 64bit machine ) the install goes without problems,
but when I finish the install and it tells me to reboot, the system is
incapable
of rebooting.

What are the 3 progress bars during a Fedora Boot Telling me?

I sent this several days ago, but I dont think it made it to the list with
its new name...

What are the 3 progress bars during a Fedora Boot Telling me?
There is a dark blue that runs ahead,
A lite blue that follows it, and
a White bar that overwrites the other two.

Along the same lines, the word 'Fedora 11' is initially blue,
but turns white near the end of the boot.

Is this just pretty graphics, or is there some actual information here?

Re: How to execute 32bit executables on 64bit system? (Solved)

Never mind, found it,

yum install redhat-lsb.i586

How to execute 32bit executables on 64bit system?

I had a system failure here (which we dont need to go into), and have
reinstalled Fedora-11/64.

Now I cant execute 32bit executables.

I know I had to set something when I installed Fedora-11/64 previously
to get this to work, but cant remember what it was.

Can someone remind me of what I need to do.

non-screen-oriented install of Fedora-11

Im trying to put Fedora-11 on an old machine, and someplace near the
beginning of the install the message pops up that I dont have enough
memory to do a 'visual' install. Visual may not be the word.

So they lead me thru an oldstyle install.
We get as far as formatting the disk, which is already formatted the way
I want it, but they DONT bring up that visual formatter that I usually use to
EDIT a partition table to make one partition root ('/').

Im sure we had a way to do this years ago, but I frankly dont remember
how to do it. How do you say 'this partition stupid'???

Spamassassin Queston.

I understood the interaction between Dcc and Spamassassin several years ago
when
I set up my machine as a 32bit mail server. Recently I upgraded the machine
to
64bit Fedora-11, and I frankly don't understand the interaction between Dcc and
Spamassassin in the code.

Both are invoked via a .procmailrc file, the significant part of which is:

# DCC Processing ....................

:0fw
| /usr/local/bin/dccproc

# SpamAssassin Processing............

:0fw
| /usr/bin/spamc

# Spam to file or /dev/null..........

Fonts Helvetica and symbol ???

I am building an old program and it wants the fonts
helvetica10
helvetica14
and symbol12

looking at the list from 'yum list all' there seem to be about a billion font
packages,- does anyone know which might provide these fonts???

I can use something similar, for helvetica, but would then have to worry about
the content of the Symbol font.

Any help would be appreciated.

Trying to get Audio Working on F11

OK, I seem to have backed myself into a hole in the ground.

I have recently installed F11.
I noticed that sound was not playing on the few videos that would play from
youtube (the rest of the videos are waiting for me to get flash working a
separate problem).

I tried aplay, me and root.

How to get FlashPlayer working under 64bit/Fc11

I have tried following the instructions, and have tried what I
consider reasonalble alternatives, but I have yet to get flash-reader
working on my 64bit machine under firefox.

The libflashplayer.so that I download appears to be a 32bit shared object
which in itself seems suspect.

Can someone PLEASE give me detailed instructions on how to get flash-player
working on this machine, or point me as some (working) instructions on the web.

Thanks in advance,- this just isnt working...
(firefox-3.5.5-1.fc11.x86_64)

Prob with 32bit lib in 64/32 Fedora11

Im still geting acquainted with all the details of 64/32bit
Fedora11. Overall things seem to be working, but I have one
32bit program that requires a (local) 32bit library.

This library has always resided in /usr/local/lib, and I have
/usr/local/lib in ld.so.conf . When I try executing the program, I get
the message:

ntp-fuzz: error while loading shared libraries: libsx.so.0: cannot open
shared object file: No such file or directory

Since everything else seems to work, I will assume Im doing something
wrong here.

Can anyone with a 64bit Fedora11 check something for me.

Im confused here.
Im getting an error message from Anacron, that states:

/usr/bin/ldd: line 163: /lib/ld-linux.so.2: cannot execute binary file

and this is true, the file mentioned is symbolic link to /lib/ld-2.10.1.so
which is 32bit library.

XV under x86_64

I use XV for everyting, and it worked fine till I went to 64bit Fc11

Is there an rpm out there with a good 64bit xv in it?
Currently the 32bit version cant find a needed library, even tho
its in /usr/lib64

Getting Flash working.

I am moving from fc6 where I had everything working, to Fc11 where
they are not working yet.

I have installed the Flash player but it does not 'work'.
I remember having to go to some Netscape window and 'set things up'
uncer FC6, but have no Idea where that might be these days.

Can someone point me at what I have to do to get flash working
after I have it installed.

Can't build 2.6.31.6 64bit kernel under Fedora11

I thought I had the solution to this problem, but I was too optomistic, it
(the problem) is still there.

This is probably a side effect of my new Fedora11 install,- they don't seem to
install as much,
by default, as they used to.

But, Im trying to build a 64bit version of linux-2.6.31.6 on a 64bit Petium4.
Starting with the first compile I get error messages from nm saying that the
file format is not
recognized.

Here is the output from both file, and nm, which appear to be inconsistent:

File shows:

reg at deneb kernel]$ file *.o
microcode.o: ELF 64-bit LSB relocatable, x86-64, version 1 (

How to compute sha256sum

This may seem to be a stupid question, but .

I can download a iso image of Fedora, then do a sha256sum of the file
and I get the result shown in the SHASUM file.

I can burn a DVD with k3b, ask for it to verify the checksum, and
have it say the checksum is OK.

But if I just do
sha256sum /dev/cdrom

I get a result which is NOT the published sum, even tho k3b said the
sum was going to be OK.

So what am I doing wrong? (and yes cdrom and dvd both point to sr0)
