Google Gears and F12

Has anyone been able to make Gears work with Firefox on F12?

Mounting iPhone

I checked something and now my iPhone 3G mounts as gphoto2://[usb:001,008]/

Unfortunately, I no longer see any photos. Is there a way to get it to
mount back to mounting as a disk (e.g., /media/iPhone) and not have it
mediated by gphoto2?

LiveUSB memory mystery

Here's the mystery. I'm running F12 from a 4GB USB key with a 2.5GB
persistent overlay on a machine with 2GB of memory.

Top shows

Mem: 2060824k total, 1912924k used, 147900k free, 89556k buffers
Swap: 4112376k total, 276k used, 4112100k free, 1478628k cached

Where is it finding 4GB of swap?

Gnome panels not rendered properly following update

After today's updates, I restarted my system. The two panels on the
gnome desktop (using Compiz or standard) are all screwed up.

Google Earth locks up system

Since I'm not sure when, Google Earth completely locks up my system,
requiring a power cycle to restart. I see the splash screen, the it
starts to display a tip-of-the-day, then plonk. System locked.

I have an old ATI card

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RV370 5B60
[Radeon X300 (PCIE)]
01:00.1 Display controller: ATI Technologies Inc RV370 [Radeon X300SE]

using the standard radeon driver.

There are no messages regarding the crash/lock in /var/log/messages. The
crash does not seem to be related to compiz.

Repost: Unable to report Firefox pblm with abrt

I'm reposting this as the original report had no responses.... Firefox
is completely unstable. The stack trace indicates that the problem is
probably in the flash plugin, but it's crashing on pages that, as far as
I can tell, have no flash content.

Abrt says it can't report a firefox crash because I need to
"debuginfo-install firefox". I did that, downloading and installing
127MB of stuff. Now, there's been another Firefox crash and abrt is
telling me the same thing.

Daily Kernel Panics

How do I report these? I get about one a day, typically while in Firefox
and doing something else. The machine locks up tight (flashing num and
scroll locks) and requires power cycling and nothing seems to get
logged. Abrt doesn't see it after restart.

Google Chrome repo now available

The repo is installed when installing the new, officially supported
Chrome beta from http://www.google.com/chrome/index.htm

Plan for Thunderbird in F12?

We've been running on Thunderbird 3, beta 4 for a while now. The
current beta release is RC2, released on 12/1. Is the plan to stay on
beta 4 until the release of version 3 or will the updates repo pick up
the release candidates?

OpenOffice and mailmerge to email

AARGH! I spent over an hour this morning on trying to get the mail
merge wizard in OpenOffice to show a "send" button, in addition to save
and print. The mailmerge package is installed, java is installed and
recognized, but OO just won't admit that it can do a merge to email.

Abashed and ashamed, I booted into Windows and got the necessary stuff
done in 5 minutes with Word and Outlook.

Brasero multiple disks

Brasero seems to have a feature to let one burn multiple disks when the
content is to large to fit on one.

I selected about 40 MP3 files for an audio CD. Brasero correctly notes
that that's too much for one CD. A button appears that says "Burn
Several Disks". Sounds good. But, when I click it, there's no BURN
button. How do you actually get it to burn several disks?

yum-updatesd -- doesn't seem to do anything

I've installed yum-updatesd on my server (run level 3) and nothing seems
to happen. It hasn't reported any updates for a long time, whether on
F11 or F12. Yum update works, however.

The service is running:
root 1940 0.0 0.9 28820 9616 ? SN 13:51 0:00
/usr/bin/python -tt /usr/sbin/yum-updatesd

The conf file is as follows.

F12 starting Gnote

When I upgraded to F12 from F11, I installed Gnote and removed Tomboy.
To get Gnote to start with Gnome, I added it to the session preferences
as "/usr/bin/gnote". Now, when I login, Gnote starts, displaying the
search window. When I close the search window, Gnote exits entirely.
If I then restart it from Applications -> Accessories, it starts again
(properly) as a tray icon.

How do I get it to start as a tray icon with the session start?

embedded You Tube not working in FF with F12

Embedded YouTube videos are no longer working for me in Firefox. If I
right click and select "view on You Tube", they're fine. I have removed
the FlashBlock addon without helping the situation.

Embedded videos work in Chrome.

Ideas?

What Java should be installed?

When I go to java.com, it tells me I don't have the "recommended"
version of Java installed. Java applets seem to run OK within firefox.

It appears that F12 uses openjdk at version 1.6.0. Is is a problem to
be behind the java.com version of 6.17 or is the openjdk version
functionally equivalent?

Currently installed:
java-1.6.0-openjdk-plugin-1.6.0.0-33.b16.fc12.i686
java-1.6.0-openjdk-1.6.0.0-33.b16.fc12.i686

F12 work around for out of space on /boot for preupgrade?

I deleted the old kernels and freed up space in /boot. Now, when I
reboot after preupgrade, it tells me I'm still 1.1 MiB short.

I don't see anything else I can delete and I suspect resizing /boot
would be a real pain.

There is an upgrade directory on /boot. Can I move the upgrade
directory to another partition and link them? That is, will this work?

cd /boot
mv upgrade /tmp/upgrade
ln -s /tmp/upgrade upgrade

F12 Preupgrade won't complete

It seemed to run through to the end, but when I rebooted, I came right
back up in F11.

LIveUSB creator fails

At the very end of the process, LiveUSB creator fails. It's writing to a
freshly partitioned and formatted (fat32) 4GB SansCruzer stick.

The logged error is:

dd if=/dev/zero of="/media/disk/LiveOS/overlay-FEDORA-2B11-C4EB"
count=-163 bs=1
M
dd: invalid number `-163'

Suggestions?

When I click "Open Containing Folder"on the Firefox download window, it
asks me to choose an application. What application should that be?

Thunderbird and attachments -- save but not open

Thunderbird seems to have lost the ability to open attached files (.pdf,
for example). The only option on a double click is to save the file.
Per the troubleshooting guide, I tried removing MimeTypes.rdf, but that
didn't help. There is no "open with" option at all.

Under EDIT -> PREFERENCES -> ATTACHMENTS, there is no way to add a new
type or change any actions.

Is this a problem with my installation or something more general?

start location for windows

When I start a new program in Gnome, it positions the new window at the
top left of the screen. Is there a way to tell it to use some other
location (e.g., center)?

Monitor does not go into standby when in X

I had some time this morning, so after getting everything up2date, I
tried this:

1. Rebooted into level3. Sat at the login prompt for about 5 minutes
and watched my monitor go into standby. Cool. So the system *can* do it.

2. Logged in and waited a while. Monitor went into standby again. So,
it's not a matter of being logged in.

3. Rebooted into level5. Logged in. Waited 45 minutes.

firefox - no printer setup dialog

The tab with the parameters to set margins, headers, footers, etc. is
missing in my version of Firefox. Do you have two tabs under FILE ->
PAGE SETUP?

Is there anything under about:config that turns this tab on?

Printing from Thunderbird or Firefox

When I print from Firefox or Thunderbird to my HP PSC 2200, the page
footer is printed just a little bit too low, or maybe the page size is a
little to big. In any case, I wind up with a second sheet of paper for
each page, with about half of the prior page's footer on it. I can't
find anyplace to adjust the margins for these applications.

Help--trees are dying from this.

Firefox dies OOM - F11

For several days now, Firefox has been dieing. It seems to get into
some condition where it gets shut down due to too much memory use. I've
disabled all extensions, but it's still happening.
