Mini 9

Hi All, My wife has a dell mini 9 netbook that has a solid state hard
drive 3.9GB I think. I am concidering putting in a second solid state
drive 15 gig. I'm wondering if I will be able to work in both drives as
though they were one or will the second drive just be a place to store
files. If it is just storage I likely would do well to use the second
drive to run Ubuntu in with the 3.9 drive as extra storage. Any
ideas with this would be appreciated.

vcr file

I'm looking for some help and am willing to pay a reasonable price. I
have a lot of video on a DVD in ATI's proprietary VCR format. The old
computer I wrote it on went up in smoke a good while back. I would like
to convert it to mpeg 2 or some other format that I can work with In
Cinelerra. If someone here has a computer with ATI software for an ATI
video board I would be willing to pay them to convert this video file
for me.

wireless driver

I have an older 933mghz Dell that I have Ubuntu8.04 running in. I want
it out in my shop. I bought an Encore wireless card and downloaded a
driver from their sight that is in a tarball. I have been using Ubuntu
several years but have not had any luck installing tarballs. It's
been a while since I have tried and I have a little more knowhow with
linux now. I have been Googleing with some success for help but i
thought someone might have a good sight to help me with this.
Thanks, Doug

Have a grub problem I think

My computer is a dual boot machine XP and Ubuntu9.04 on two drives. I
had EMC2 running in Ubunt 8.04 and it uses a different kernal that
does not work well doing video I'm told. I switched to 9.04 with a live
dvd so that I might install Cinelerra. Of course this meant
repartitioning the Linux drive I think something has gone wrong with
grub. When the window comes up to pick an operating system I can not
move the highlight up and down the list using the up and down
arrows.

Dell Ubuntu Netbook

Hi fgolks,
I bought my wife a Dell Ubuntu Netbook it has a 3.8Gig solid state
drive. ( No hard drive). It also has a dell modified version of Ubuntu
to make it smaller. I installed and updated for ubuntu that installed
all the programs and files dell had removed from the installed version.
Now I need to reinstall dells version from a CD as the main drive is
full of files. The net book does not have a cd drive I'm thinking I
might be able to run the cd in my ubuntu computer and reinstall in
Ubuntu in the dell computer through a USB port.

wireless card

I have a linksys wireless card that I have messed with off and on for a
week. Ubuntu can't see it. Ihave been in terminal and have found no
sign that it exists. Have tried installing drivers, Widows drivers,
nothing from any of that. Is there a way to find out that it might be
faulty or that it works at all. I have thought about plugging it
into a different computer but that seems kind of extreme . Any
help??
Thanks, Doug

set up wireless internet

I am trying to get my wireless card working. The card has been in the
machine a long time but has not been in use in about a year. It is a
Linksys card But I have no numbers as to make and model. My ubuntu
8.04 64 bit system can't seem to see it. I don't believe I have the
correct driver on board. I have been to the Ubuntu 8.04 help page and
spent a great deal of yesterday trying to work my way through this.
Without a card number I can't pick a driver to install.

hard drive permissions

Hi All, I had to replace the second hard drive on a single boot
system. I have Ubuntu 8.04 on the first drive. I partitioned the
second drive using the live Ubuntu cd. The drive belongs to root and I,
as user, cannot add and remove files. I kinda know how to change
permissions on a file, but have not figured out how to change a drive.
Everything I'm reading refers to changing permissions on a file but I am
working with a drive. Can I get some help here.

Messed up Grub

I decided to use my sda and sdb drives as one drive. I tried to
reformat my sdb drive using G-parted screwed up and started
partitioning my first hard drive. I stopped it, but I guess messed up
Grub in the process.
I get, ( Grub loading please wait error 22 ) message on attempting
to load the original ubuntu program. I needed online help with this so
I installed ubnuntu from a cd on my second drive to get access to
Ubuntu users group. I believe my original Ubuntu is still on my first
hard drive along with pictures and video but I don't know how to get
back to it.

Panel

I have four desktop icons or small panels on my lower panel. I have
several tutorials in my home directory. I would like to show all three
of them in seperate desk tops so I can go back and forth and compare the
tutorials as I work in Cinelerra which is in a fourth panel. I click
on the different panels but the different tutorials all open in the
same desk top. Is what I am trying to do not permitted? Is there a
problem that prevents me from getting the tutorials in different
desktops. I hope this makes sense, and if not let me know and I will
try to explain better.

convert avi files to mpeg

Hello all,
I captured a bunch of video files in kino and placed them in
cinelerra. The first couple I saved as AVI. I had thought I would
recapture them later as mpeg and delete the avi files but this is a good
time to learn to use ffmpeg to convert avi to mpeg I copied a couple of
commands from web sites but was unable to get ffmeg up and running. I
also tried Averdimux but it seems not to like avi files. A little help
with a good tutorial might be a big help.

usb hardrive

My usb hard drive sdh1 shows up at the bottom of the below list in terminal. There is no icon in ( places, home) to open. I assume this is because it is not mounted at start up. I plan to do all my backups to this drive. Without backup I feel pretty naked when it comes to trying to get the partition to mount at start up. I don't need all my files screwed up. I am not really sure mounting is the problem.

can't see usb hard drives

I have 4 hard drive 2 of them are external usb drives first is sda 1,
2, and 5 ext 3 the second drive is sdb1 and has a single partition
ext3 the 3rd drive is a USB sdc1 single partition ext3 . This next
drive is odd it is also USB sdh 1 ext3 . Computer file browser cannot
see the USB drives. The last tree drives were formatted and
partitioned in Gparted. Gparted can't see USB sdh 1 now.
I Did fdisk -l and received below info
Hope someone can help me with this I'm getting dog gone close to
doing video with this system.

Same ole permissions problem

I have been up and down on this a couple of weeks now and am no
farther ahead. I must really be thick. :-(
I am trying to get going on making video in Cinelerra. I have had a
lot of help from this group.
I was trying to change permissions and ownership to ( me user)
Ubuntu crashed or at least locked up. I rebooted and got a message that
there was a problem and I would have to reboot as Root. Apparently
there was no user file.
I could not run so could not get on line help. Never thought to run
ubuntu off a cd to get help. OH well!!

permissions

Gettig this error message on after log in
Users home $
user$home / dmrc file is being ignored. This prevents the default
session and language from being saved. File should be owned by user and
have 644 permissions.Users$Home directory must be owned by user writeble
by other users.

I have moved files from and external usb drive they are files saved by
windows I want to store them in my user home drive.
