When headphones are plugged in, the speaker does not get muted automatically.

Anyone have any suggestions for resolving issues in the following bug?
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/alsa-driver/+bug/477154
[When headphones are plugged in, the speaker does not get muted
automatically.]

Fairly new HP G60-530US laptop w/9.10 and it's annoying as hell that I'm
not able to get the system to mute the speakers when the headphones are
plugged in. My data/comments start at #71:

Note: Jatin has a similar/same issue in the "Sound Coming in headphones
as well as speakers" thread.

[Resolved - but still a mystery] Re: Signing key errors

Seems it was a system error on my side... removed the repository & key
from my /etc/apt/sources.list, reloaded & all is working now. Still
curious as to what was borked, but happy all is working again.

Signing key errors

[Karmic 32bit 2.6.31-20-generic]

I am getting the following errors today on repository updates (sudo
apt-get update) only on this one system:

following signatures were invalid: BADSIG DCF9F87B6DFBCBAE Sun

Olympics/Americas Cup - Moonlight/Rayv

OK, it's that time of year again...

Olympics are starting this weekend (if they get snow), and the Americas
Cup (if they get wind). Problem is (as usual) that non-Win/Mac users are
still being left out of being able to watch both events in HD.

For the Olympics, NBC have again elected to use MS Windows Silverlight.
However, the most recent version of moonlight (mono-o-mono) is supposed
to work. However, even with the moonlight 2.0 plugin[1] I can't get the
nbc site (http://www.nbcolympics.com/) a silverlight video.

Shifting to things online is, IMO, a *big* mistake (anyone for Google vs
China?), but that's just my opinion.

[Karmic] NX Remote (NoMachine)

Perhaps a little out of the charter/realm of this list, but I'm trying
to figure out an issue whereby when I NX (NoMachine) into this desktop
am unable to move a window & have only partial window decoration
(meaning that I do not get the - square x in the upper right hand corner
of the remote application window.

Anyone have a clue as to why the sun-java versions always seem to be out
of wack?

SoftModems/Linuxant

The recent storms rolling through California wreaked havoc on the power
grids & I'm once again in search of how to install a supplied laptop
win/softmodem in linux. The new laptop (HP G60-530US) came in handy
today when the power went out (several times); I was easily able to
dual-boot into Win7 and connect to a standard POTS line (even with all
power out) and get on-line.

[Solved] Re: Beginner Q1: Linux incapable of handling FDD? CONCLUDED

Baka is a baka does...

The bug reports, and test results from others already verified the
floppy issues in 9.10. They (bug reports and other list users) also
verified workarounds for the floppy issue in 9.10.

So I reckon we can mark this as '[Solved] by your installing 9.04?

[OT] Re: a Linksys BEFSR81 problem

Assuming that you have V3, here are the emulation pages:
http://ui.linksys.com/files/BEFSR81/v3/2.50.2/

If you are looking for dhcp addresses:
http://ui.linksys.com/files/BEFSR81/v3/2.50.2/Status_Lan.htm
DHCP leases will be shown by clicking the DHCP Client Table button).

Port settings are:

You can use the emulator to go through all of the menus without screwing
up your own router. Lower versions are here:

update-notifier error

I'm a bit stuck... updated my son's desktop from 9.04 to 9.10 and I'm
now getting the following error from update-notifier. I've purged &
reinstalled update-notifier (including the /usr/lib/update-notifier/
folder) and am still getting the error. Any suggestions where I might
look to resolve this?

HP G60-530US Internal Microphone

Hint/tip.

Found it a bit embarrassing that I could use the video & internal mic on
my new HP G60-530US laptop in Win7, but couldn't get the internal mic to
work with Ubuntu karmic 9.10...

The laptop has a built in webcam so I loaded up Cheese & guvcview to
test the webcam & microphone. No luck.

Synaptics Touchpad Issues

New HP G60-530US laptop w/Ubuntu karmic 64bit
2.6.31-18-generic #55-Ubuntu SMP Fri Jan 8 14:54:52 UTC 2010 x86_64

I'm attempting to figure out how to turn off/on the touchpad via the
touchpad on/off key. I found options to do this via configuring a series
of keys[1] but haven't tried as yet.

Xsane bug 485667 - xsane starts when printer plugged in

Is anyone else experiencing this same issue with xsane on karmic?
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xsane/+bug/485667
[xsane starts when printer plugged in]

It's nothing major, but is irritating as heck to have xsane start up
every time I turn on my printer. Probably worse for the original
reporter who's printer doesn't even include a scanner.

I've purged & reinstalled xsane, etc., and I still can't figure out the
trigger. Suggestions on where/what to troubleshoot will be most appreciated.

Safely clean out old log files?

What is the best method to safely clean out old log files? I have log
files on some of my machines that go back to 2007 & I'm pretty sure that
I don't need them any longer.

[Resolved] Re: "Could not open location 'file:///home/"

Nevermind, found a fix in:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nautilus/+bug/260492

The places menu entries however did not work as per this bug report. Had
to right-click on a folder, select "open with another program..." and
then to pick nautilus as default application to open "this and other
files of type "folder" to fix this issue.

"Could not open location 'file:///home/"

Odd occurance on one of my 9.04 gnome systems; not sure what I did to
cause this, but when I click 'Places|Home' or any other folder in
'Places' I get the following msg:

"Could not open location 'file:///home/'
No application is registered as handling this file"

I've tried replacing .gnome, .gnome2, .gnome_private, .local, .config,
reinstalling just about every 'menu' & 'gnome' that I can find. It's
definately a configuration issue of sorts as I do not experience the
same with other users on the system.

I can open Nautilus via:
1. Applications|File Browser
2.

dd + gparted + UUID

Ran into an interesting problem today; I was given a pair of 200Gb hard
drives this week to replace my 40Gb drives. On the first machine I went
the dd route of copying all of the files from the 40Gb to the 200Gb. Got
everything converted w/o issue (well, other than having to run Supergrub
to get the grub sorted out afterwards).

On the second machine I used gparted to copy the 40Gb to the other 200Gb
drive.
