Using 2 monitors?

By Knapp at 07/12/2010 - 07:50

I have a 7600 gs Nvidia card and am looking at a new "Gigabyte Silent-Cell
5750" ATI card. If I have these 2 cards and 2 monitors, can I then run both
monitors at the same time?

ATI card, is it good?

am looking at this card. It has no fan and that is what I want but I have
always used Nvidia before. I have also heard lots of complaints about ATI
cards. Does ATI work now with (K)Ubuntu? What does everyone think about this
card?

Thanks!

Switching monitors each day.

By Knapp at 07/08/2010 - 05:34

Hello, I have a system where I need to switch between 2 monitors each day.
The problem is that if I set one up the other will not work. I need a fast
way to plug in the new monitor and get Linux to use new settings. Any ideas?
How might I make this work?
Thanks!

Hello, I finally got the cth to work but the button on the pad all
make the mouse pointer jump to the top left. How can I change this?
Thanks!

KVKBD Has added functions.

By Knapp at 06/07/2010 - 09:18

I just wanted to point out the great job the devs did in helping me by
making a video of the way they improved this program for me.
It is now useful for making tutorials and will be made even better in
the future. They tell me the improved version will soon be in the
repos.

I kill Kubuntu! Help!

By Knapp at 05/22/2010 - 01:59

I was attempting to compile VLC and it requires a LOT of libs. I am
sure I deleted or replaced something important.
Now my system gets to the Kubuntu booting screen and the ants stop
crawling. ctrl alt f1 will not give a command line but ctrl alt del
will reboot.

How do I get my system back? How do I restore the old libs?

Thanks!

Drop out with 1080p file

By Knapp at 05/16/2010 - 16:01

I am getting drop outs with this file, especially in the bit with the
dog and the man walking through the long grass.
Is this due to my amd x2 64 cpu, my nvidia geforce 7600 gs video card
or maybe KDE or the something else? What do I need to get it to work?
4GB ram btw. Running it with 10.04 and the 195.36.15 driver. Playback
with VLC.

Thanks!

Bad booking on upgraded 10.4

By Knapp at 05/10/2010 - 02:36

I just upgraded to 10.4. It often hangs during boot. I think grub is
throughingsome error but where is its log?

I just installed Skype but

By Knapp at 03/26/2010 - 13:16

I installed from their websites but when I run it, it can't see the
USB microphone only one called pulse local. When I run it sudo it can
see the mics and stuff. What must I do to make this work without it
having SUDO rights?

wireless failure

By Knapp at 03/22/2010 - 08:13

Hello, I had my computer freeze up and then robooted. After that the
wireless will not work. It shows up on lsusb but not on ifconfig. I
had this happen before and swapping my wireless dongle with my laptop
made it work but now that one will not work ether because it computer
crashed again. Both dongles still work on the laptop so I guess the
crash has borked a config somewhere but I don't know where to look
now. Thanks.

Upgrade to beta?

By Knapp at 03/19/2010 - 10:28

Is it safe to upgrade to the beta? Yes, I know what beta means but how
is it going? How stable is it now? Anyone playing with it? What do you
think about it so far?

streaming music

Are there any services on the web that would let me upload my music
collection and stream it to myself?

Are these warnings normal? What must I install to remove them?

Jack and pulse audio

By Knapp at 03/13/2010 - 04:17

Can jack replace pulse audio? I really don't understand what the
difference between them is. I have read the wiki on this but still
don't get it.
Thanks.

Logitech 9000 webcam

By Knapp at 03/12/2010 - 11:12

Hello, just got this cam and it can do some very nice stuff but only
in windows. It works in linux at low res so that is a good start. I
was thinking of doing it in wine but what should I download? win xp,
vista, system 7 and 64 bit or 32 bit (my Ubuntu is 64 bit). Thanks for
any help or new ideas!

Programs that I had no idea existed.

By Knapp at 03/05/2010 - 10:19

I have used Ubuntu and linux for about 12 years and had no idea that
these food programs existed until I read this:
<a href="http://www.linuxlinks.com/article/20100301145202407/FoodandDrink.html" title="http://www.linuxlinks.com/article/20100301145202407/FoodandDrink.html">http://www.linuxlinks.com/article/20100301145202407/FoodandDrink.html</a>
No worries, I had nothing to do with writing or the website and it is
a very short read. All the programs are in the repos of my system
9.10.

NFS, Why so slow?

By Knapp at 03/02/2010 - 05:18

I now have a working NFS between 2 computers using wifi and a router.
They are all rated as 802.11g but I am getting only 1,100 kBytes/s.
How can I debug this? What might be the problem? I don't even know
what info to post to get started.
Thanks all.

I was installing autofs for my ntf system. I see that there are 2,
autofs and autofs5. Which should I use? Is this the best way to go in
any case? It is just a simple home system.

I think I see the problem now. What I want is a called a webcam not a video cam.

So what is the best high def web cam for skype and does it work with
Linux. (note that I only run linux so don't bother telling me about MS
stuff).

So no one has any ideas about quality video cameras for use with Skype
in Ubuntu or did my email just not make it to the list?

What is the best Vid Camera for Skype and 9.10 or better. A list is
just fine if they are all good. What about this high quality video? Is
it working with Ubuntu yet? Thank all!

Bad boot?

By Knapp at 02/21/2010 - 03:52

my computer was booting and it started one of those once every 30 boot HD
checks. It says you can press escape so my wife did. Will this do damage?
How can I start it again? Do I need to do that? Where are the records of
what is was trying to check? Any other things I should know about this?
Thanks!

Dillo is missing!

By Knapp at 02/19/2010 - 07:13

What happened to Dillo? It is not in the repos. It is a GREAT browser
if you don't mind not having all the flash and if you want that then
there is always FF. Dillo loads so fast you hand will not be off the
clicking button! It pops up websites in a heart beat. Why is it gone
now? Anyone have any ideas? The one thing I have found googling said
it was still in developement and we should not use it. LOL!!!

nfs 3 or 4??

By Knapp at 02/18/2010 - 17:46

I have installed and set up the nfs server but when you get to the
auto-mount bit it gives two different formats, one for 3 and one for
4. The aptitude show says: The NFS kernel server is currently the
recommended NFS server for use with Linux,
featuring features such as NFSv3 and NFSv4.

So what settings do I use? Is this 3 or 4???
Thanks all.

nfs, stopping hackers

By Knapp at 02/18/2010 - 05:51

This is from an ubuntu nfs webpage:
<a href="https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SettingUpNFSHowTo" title="https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SettingUpNFSHowTo">https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SettingUpNFSHowTo</a>
Aside from the UID issues discussed above, it should be noted that an
attacker could potentially masquerade as a machine that is allowed to
map the share, which allows them to create arbitrary UIDs to access
your files. One potential solution to this is IPSec, see also the NFS
and IPSec section below.

Recovered MP3 files have no names

By Knapp at 02/15/2010 - 06:50

I have 3000 files that were recovered from a HD crash. They now are
all named things like f43242344.mp3. The songs have their meta data,
so is there some way to rename the files based on the meta data? Do
you know of any programs that can do that?
Thanks

Has anyone tested these on Ubuntu? What do you think? Which is better?
Why? Better memory print? Speed? Looks?
Thanks all!

File sharing with the CLI

By Knapp at 02/12/2010 - 08:09

Hello, I have a computer that I think has networking set up, (linux).
I have a second small laptop that is CLI from the rescue CD remix. I
want to send a file from the laptop to the main computer. They are
both on the same router. How do I do this? What must I do to the
laptop to make this work? THanks!

Hello, I have a nice working Kubuntu install with lots of extra storage space.
I also have my relatives laptop that has ALL their baby pictures that
were never backed up!
Their kid tossed the computer onto the floor and now the drive is dead
with read errors and the MS recovery disk can't help.

As I understand it the best think I can do is boot the computer with a
live CD and copy the small HD over to my computer with the router. I
have no clue about the best way to set this up on my computer. Any
pointers on this basic one time use networking?

Second question.

Hardware data collection

By Knapp at 02/11/2010 - 06:40

I need to know things like what motherboard, graphics card etc a
computer has. What programs are good for getting this info. I thought
there was something that was standard but I can't find it. Maybe the
was kde3?
