Dbus, ETC Issues On Jaunty

Cant log into kde on Jaunty. First time I've seen this issue on Ubuntu running kde. Also tried to login to gnome which also failed.
Here's whats happening:
Messages: After kde login.
Failed to open connection to "system" message bus: Failed to connect to socket /var/run/dbus/system_bus_socket:No such file or directory
?????-rc,d: initscriptss dbus, action forced -reload failed(sorry couldn't read my own writing. ATF, looks like make but prob not)

After the above, I booted into recover mode and reinstalled NM and others including dbus.

Test

Sorry for the noise. Just trying to see if I can send via gmane ubuntu
whereas I can't my regular gmane email account. SMTP issue of some kind.

Installing WIcd Using Ubuntu CD After NM Quit

Just installed karmic on an old Dell Dimensions XPS T450. Everything OK
until I upgraded and installed kubuntu-desktop. Called for a reboot and
after rebooting completed NM wifi connection quit working. Tried to
reconfigure NM again but no luck. Attempted to install wicd but that
didn't work without a network. Ticked to use the cd/dvd to install in
software sources and reloaded but only get failure to connect on the
Ubuntu main mirror.

Download Manager Query

When one downloads a duplicate copy of an app into the same folder, DM
add a "(2)" to the end of the filename and before any extension. That's
good, I think, but you can no longer operate on the file, rename it or
execute it. I would like to execute the last downloaded file instead of
the older one, even though they are identical except for naming but
can't seem to do that. The error output is:

mv ubcd411(2).iso ubcd411.2.iso
bash: syntax error near unexpected token `('

I expect if I had tried to burn it, I would get a similar error.
Any one know how circumvent the issue?

Possible To Burn Multiple Apps To One DVD-R With Menu?

What I want to do is place multiple utilities(may be iso, tar*, bin or
whatever) on a single DVD-R bootable disk along with some sort of menu
program that would allow me to select the program I want to run. Is it
even possible with free software? K3B would be nice to use if possible
and Human Friendly. Have googled over the issue but only read about
proprietary software(don't want) and mostly burning videos or audios to
a single disk for playback. I have used K3B and Roxio to burn ubuntu
isos, all single isos, but for nothing else.

No New 2.6.31-16-generic Kernel-Why?

As mentioned in a previous reply, I have only the kernel headers for
this new kernel. No generic kernel or modules for it. I also have two
Karmic partitions and just safe-upgraded and dist-upgraded both Karmic
partitions yet no -16 kernel or modules on either. One partition uses
the archives.ubuntu.com mirror and the other uses the 76.73.4.58 karmic
mirror. Anyone have any idea why only the header files are available on
two different mirror but not the kernel or modules.

Fw: Re: Karmic 9.10 new kernel BAD!

Sorry guys.  Karl did provide the info but to me directly and not copied the list.  I overlooked that fact when I read his email to me.

Fwd: [Bug 469470] Re: proprietary nvidia driver does not work under karmic

Hello (K)Ubuntu Users,

I would appreciate it very much if those Karmic and Nvidia proprietary
driver users(nvidia-glx-185 or the -180 driver) having X issues of any
kind would visit this bug report and add any appropriate comments. I am
one of the many users who has had little bug issues with Karmic and
Nvidia drivers until the latest 2.6.31-15 generic kernel and nvidia
driver upgrades. So far, only the bug report originator and I have made
contributions and we need many more to keep the bug report going.

Low Resolution Issue Since Last Karmic Kernel Update

Running Karmic up-to-date with kernel image 2.6.31-15-generic and 64 bit OS.
Graphics is Nvidia GeForce 9400 GT with HDMI cables and PCIE slot
Monitor is LG Flatron Wide with 22" monitor and 1680X1050 @ 60HTZ native
resolution
X has performed flawlessly since day one up until the last kernel
upgrade using the
nvidia-glx-185 proprietary driver. Used the -180 nvidia driver prior to
-185 becoming
available.
Have tried all the options displayed on the startup message showing the
startup in
low resolution mode but no joy. Have also gone through the
nvidia-settings bit but
again no joy.

XFIX-What Happened To It In Karmic?

The subject say it all. After the last 3-4 updates, I can now scrool
through the recovery menu and find that xfix is not listed. Is there a
way run the program without it being on the recovery mode kernel? I
sure miss having the capability to run it if needed.

Re: How do I login into kde when booting ubuntu 9.10 karmic koala

Did you not see a kde selection in one of the dropdown menu boxes on the login manager?  If not, did you install the kubuntu-desktop?

Can't Get App Icon In Sys Tray

Using Karmic Beta and SM2.0rc1 and can't figure out how to add an app icon
to my kde4 system tray although I done so many time before. Alzheimer, I guess. I've tried right clicking and double clicking the blank portion of sys tray but no help. I don't have a SM icon in Kmenu->Applications->Internet so I can't right click it. Once I get the icon
in the tray, I can handle it from there. Can someone help me to get the icon in the tray?
TIA,

Re: [Karmic] SeaMonkey + 64bit +plugins

The attached text file, SM.text has some interesting info after all the "wrong ELF Class" info. Perhaps someone knows the significance of the info and use it to solve the 64 bit plugin issue.

Kernel Problem?

"Your system encountered a serious kernel problem." Your system may become unstable and may need to be restarted or to that effect. A button appears in the message to allow reporting the problem which I have done once.
The above appears every time I start the computer since the last couple of upgrades. Running Karmic Beta with Kubuntu Desktop on 64 bit. System has performed better before the last couple of upgrades.
Anyone experiencing the same issue or know a fix?

SM 2.0rc1+No Plugins On Karmix Beta 64 Bit

Wondering is anyone out in ubu land has Seamonkey 2.0 rc1 installed with plugins working and showing in about:plugins on Karmic Beta 64 bit. NoOp has been working with me on this issue and we are totally unsuccessful in getting plugins to work, so far and without much promise.  I have 64 bit libnpjp2.so, libflashplayer.so and the auto installed skype, rhythm, and four totem lib plugins currently in /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins which is linked to ~/.mozilla/plugins folder.

Brother MFC490-CW Drivers for Printer?

Does anyone know for sure if the following printer drivers listed from aptitude search brother will work on the subject printer. I can use the Brother supplied deb files on their site but it's a little tedious and requires use of --force-architecture dpkg option as I've done on previous versions of Ubuntu but would rather use a packaged ubuntu driver if possible.

Annoiances Using Karmic Beta Kubuntu-Desktop

Every time I boot up or log out and back in I get these messages which apparently are harmless but very annoying.  Anyone know how to fix?  Messages are"
Information KDE sudo
No command arguments supplied!
Usage: kdesudo [-u ]
KdeSudo will now exit...

Note: I've never used kdesudo from the CLI and not knowingly from a gui.

The other dissapears on it's on rather fast but as I remember it says:

KDE Resources Tool
Trying to recover resources...
succeeded..,
or something to that effect.

All you KDE Karmic Beta users out there, any thoughts on this and how to fix?

Having trouble installing some addon for Seamonkey-1.1.7 on the new

Adobe Acroread 32 Bit On 64 Bit Karmic-How?

Did my homework, googled(for 2 days), discoveed only 32 bit acroread available of linux, found the Adobe download site and tried to download
ftp://ftp.adobe.com/pub/adobe/reader/unix/9.x/9.1.3/enu/AdbeRdr9.1.3-1_i.... I suppose that the "enu" stands for English language, maybe universal or something to that effect. I started the download and it appeared to download(status bar shows progress until it completes then nothing. Can't find the download in my Desktop or anywhere else. sudo updatedb followed by locate only returns the cursor line.

Re: Newbie questions

Thanks, the photo and link did help.  Your photo was nothing like
I saw when I found THP by googling.  Your link on my ff-3.5 Karmic system did show the "change server button" which I clicked bringing up
the select server page but there are no listings of servers that I could find.  Hitting the connect button just popped up a message saying that I must select a server etc, but none are to be found.

Re: Karmic (Beta) Test Installs

I have some success to report that may be of help to others concerned with the grub2 issue of losing their previous installs. I use the Karmic(not Karmak as I previously wrote)AMD 64 live DVD on a new empty partition to install the Beta version and it went perfectly.  Didn't ask me if I had other OSes on the HDD but did show them on the partitioning part of the install.

Plasma System Tray Shows Multiple Instances of Running Apps

Using Jaunty up-to-date, KDE 3.41 and Plasma widgets in system tray. After a FF-3.5.2 crash, I lost most of the
installed icons and the running apps no longer show in the sys tray. Well, I've done a lot, such as reinstalling okular, gvfs, gvfs-backends, gvfs-bin, gvfs-fuse and libgvfscommon0, and probably others I don't remember now. Why, because there were output errors associated with those files. I reinstall some of the plasma programs also but can't remember which ones.

Re: KDE 4.3 PPA Install In Jaunty-Dependencies Issues[SOLVED]
Sunday, August 16, 2009 10:59 PM
I suggest you review the thread but the quick
answer is to remove "indi" and install libindi0:
Use "sudo dpkg -r indi" and "sudo aptitude install libindi0"
Note the it's a zero and not an O in libindi0.
I don't know why you need dpkg -r to remove indi
Instead of using aptitude remove but that's what
worked for me.

KDE 4.3 PPA Install In Jaunty-Dependencies Issues

Installed kde 4.3 using:
http://webupd8.blogspot.com/2009/08/install-kde-43-in-ubuntu-jaunty-904....
Although kde 4.33 is installed and working reasonably there are some depends issues. libindi0 wont install leaving kstars kdeedu kde unconfigured. The usual fixes don't work; sudo aptitude -f install, dpkg -i /var/cache/apt/archives/libindi0_0.6-0ubuntu1_amd64.deb, or installing libindi0 as an individual separate pkg all failed. Can anyone suggest a possible resolution of the depends?

Re: flash stopped working after update?!

Hi KArl, something does seem amiss here based on my experience.  I usually have to run update-alernatives whenever I install(upgrade) to a new kernel version. On many occasions, on an update or new install, I have to go through the update-alternatives again(they change). As we both use 9.04 64 bit, I'm surprised you only have the npwrapper since swfdec-mozilla/libswfdecmozilla.so is an auto install, I believe, and I have both. swf-dec was the default where flash didn't work, now the npwrapper flash installer is by my selection and flash media play fine.
