media storage challenge

Admittedly my ultimate shortcoming is file system and I need to
configure a data partition I have labelled media/storage.
/sbin/mkfs.ext3 -m 1 /dev/sda8 (this went well)
Then I tried (hit and miss)
mount -t ext3 /dev/sda8 /data2
mount: mount point /data2 does not exist
So can someone take me by the hand and give me the sequential terminal
codes so I hve complete control of this partition as single user
Happy Thanksgiving and thabk you for your attention

additional update confusion

partial update halted??
went to update manager shows only 91.2 MB with I guess amounts to
error message i.e. Not all updates can be installed, run partial
upgrade (which I just tried)
Do I need to burn a new CD from another source or what. Please advise

-Thanks

curious installation and upgrade

I just burned a live CD from an official source 32 bit 9.04
http://www.ubuntu.com/GetUbuntu/download
Installed it to a unit 32 bit I am reactivating. After download I get
a pop up concerning partial upgrade and naturally I choose it and
process time frame 1 hour 58 minutes with DSL.
As subject implies I am just curious. Was there a later version or
download that would have included these.

Thanks

To Core Members (you know who you are)

In my quest for growth and change in the ubuntu community the core
members (thats the folks who are there to provide a resource) have truly
given me an education and have with patience put up with my ineptitude
and age related challenges and I am grateful beyond description.
My problem presently is being curious I read it all which leads to
frustration.
So I will move my questions to the forum, check back from time to time
to see if there has been a return to the list of old.
I certainly will not miss the ranters as you were not there to provide a
resource anyway.
I will miss the truly great c

permission

That doesn't look right. /dev/sdb2 is mounted at "/media/data_" and
also
at "/media". That hides everything else mounted at "/media/*". Did you
mount it manually there? Anyway, I would suggest you use the command

sudo umount /media

to make it a single mount. Maybe you that was the real problem and you
can then access both partitions already. Otherwise I would assume you
can't write to any of the partitions.

Permission

I created an additional partition on my USB storage. They are both
mounted and I see the icons for both. I attempted to drag and drop and
to save. Error msg says I do not have permission. So I thought I would
wait until tomorrow and I tried to shut down. Error msg system policy
prevents stopping system when other users are logged in. What is
stranger still with that error msg my ubuntu desktop is brand new with
only the 2 partition icons.
Help please

Adding partition to existing USB drive (data only)

My existing data drive is working great, however I want to add a
partition (which I know how to do)
My purpose is categorizing information, i.e, moving from one partition
to other.
My question is two fold when that icon comes up on the desktop is the
entire drive mounted or must I mount the partitions separate?
Then at that point will I have two browser windows one for each
partition and its then a drag and drop process.

Thanks

Ubuntu as viewed from a different “mindset”

In the midst of the ongoing thread on what could be characterized as war
on words I post this with some reluctance because from the purists point view
I am high-jacking the thread. But I must do it in appreciation of the community
who were instrumental in getting me where I am today.
I started with Linux 2 years ago at age 75 a typical point and click windows
dummy.

Extending use of my USB drive

Presently I confine the use of my external to a huge data partition
which I unmount and unplug after use.
What I want to do is use it as well for a 2nd Linux OS and I merely want
to be sure I am leaving nothing undone.
My thought was to insert gparted live CD and resize external and
install. Is there something I am missing.
Please advise
I can only hope the tone of my request evokes no further comments on
that thread.
Seriously I appreciate the list even in its present state of flux.

Sending a odt file format to windows user

I have occasion to e-mail attachments to a die hard MS user (business
contact) and he goes bonkers when he cannot open it.
(a) what to change the odt to
(b) how about the font only one I seem to remember from windows that
is available is century (but not sure 10 pitch)
Pardon basic nature of this, but this guy is real pain and will not
agree to even a coverter.

Thanks

Date & time

The following appeared this AM as a means of setting time and date and
I was wondering if someone on the list might translate for those of us
who have difficulty with understanding a line like date +%Y%m%d -s
"20090502"
or date +%T -s "11:14:00". Quite simply how to set date and time so a
challenged Texan can understand. Plus it might bring comic relief to
the French troublemaker thread and give Karl time to reflect..

Error 15 again

I was online decided to change my 9.04 from ext3 to 4. Inserted
gparted live CD made the change and at reboot received error.
Absolutely did nothing else. Reversed went back to ext3 in
desperation, but no help. Please advise. I am on my wifes computer and
that is really a bad sign

168 GB Partition

Will wonders never cease. Simple as going to places+160 GB and drag
and drop into that window

A USB drive as (1) 160 GB partition sole purpose data

I will state what I am doing, not attesting to it being right and await
your critique.
1.I can plug it in, go places and it shows on left tree 160GB. To the
right is a data folder and right of that folder Lost+found

2. I can right click on a given file to move to said partition, choose
send, the, removable disk & shares, send to 160GB media

3. When I right click on 160GB icon + properties I see the file pie as
if I was in windows C and it shows the presence of what I sent, but not
titled.

4.

Alternate option f11 gain access to - minimize

On a much more frequent basis my available screen takes over everything.
Depressing f11 either once or twice only revels the - a nano second. And
in gmail when this happens even bookmarks and as an example clicking
Ubuntu forum does nothing. The screen is like frozen. Again to make
myself clear pressing f11 only moves the screen down for a moment.
Please advise

Fwd: MBR as a constant

The subject title is really not as descriptive as it should be, but here goes.
Most windows/Linux users have windows first with the MBR as a constant
I guess. I on the other hand have no windows but 8.10 is my constant
(I thought) on sda.

/home partition

The great thing about support from a list like this is one is inspired
to grow and change. I have goggled a bunch on this home partition
thing and I did not accept it originally on the live CD option.
However on reflection I decided to give it a shot via my gparted live
CD, but now I must mount/fill and activate.

accessing Debian files from Ubuntu

I find myself needing documents from Debian when I am in Ubuntu.
Whether its relevant or not Ubuntu is sda on HD and Debian is sdb on
external.
Please advise and thanks

Memtest choice on dual boot

I recently cleaned up if that's a good description my hard drives sda1 is my
internal HD that houses mephis by itself and the MBR if that is relevant.
This cleanup involved re-partition of my external that houses Debian and
ubuntu no swap if that is relevant. Swap is on sda1
So now at boot choices I see all 3 OS choices as well as the memtest for
sda1.
I am just curious as all get out as to what prompted this inclusion.
Thanks again

Grub MBR an enigma

I have no problem creating live CD'S and depending on the OS being
installed or the presence of other OS where to put grub and how to
answer the MBR question is elusive as all get out to me at least.
I more then likely end up not being able to boot until I put in gpated
and remove what appears to be one too mant boot on flag on a given
partition.
Could someone point me to an explanation

Boot sequence

What must one do when xp is sda1 and you are about to install 2 additional
linux OS to a pre existing partition and you want XP hda1 to be last in the
boot sequence.
Below is how it looks now and I will make any suggested changes as long as
the outcome is XP last.
For those wondering I am not a nut I have very valid reason.

hda1 NTFS
hda2 (intended for linus OS)
hda3 swap
hda4 (intended Linux OS}
Thanks in advance

Inability to type

To add to information I just posted. That inability to type only exists in
KDE
Please advise.

Burning Live CD

In an effort to make burning a live CD a reality going to give this one more
shot.
1. It does not recognize that there is a blank CD inserted
2. It will play both a music CD as well as a data (computer based learning
CD)
In desperation I went to live chat on HP support and was fortunate enough to
get someone who understood English and was not outsourced to India.
What follows good bad or indifferent is what he outlined I do and what I did
(It still does not recognize blank media.
This exchange I am about to relate obviously will only be understood by the
really experienced user.

8.04 vs. 810 updates

My experience recently reflects a slightly different view of desktop change.
I had occasion to reinstall 8.04 and then installed kubuntu desktop and I
experienced the change as well and for a fact I am KDE3 and for the
immediate future will stay that way.
Now I assume the change you all are speaking of occurs post boot to the
kubuntu blue rather then the ubuntu orange and options occuring to the right
of the blue screen vs. to the left on the old orange.
