Problem With DVD Conversion

I have a Region 1 DVD with NTSC output. It was bought mistakenly but I
find that the DVD has not been released in Region 2 (Europe) format with
PAL output, so this is the only version I can get.

I would like to use the information on it for research purposes in an
educational establishment (the University Of Kent), so copyright is not
an issue here (and been checked with members of the School of Law).

What software will most easily be able to convert from Region 1 to
Region 2 and convert NTSC to PAL?

Unless I misunderstood, this is precisely the scenario that sudo was
devised to prevent.

In Ubuntu, users use the sudo command to duplicate the security
privileges of another user (usually root, or superuser, but it could be
any user). In traditional Linux distribution such as Debian, you have
different passwords for root and the user account: when you switch to
the root account and enter the password you enter that account a run it
with all its privileges.

Pan In *buntu Repos

The version of Pan in the repos is 0.133, but this version has a bug
which prevents multipart binaries being downloaded.

There is a version of Pan that has been patched (there are a few other
patches too, apparently) in one of the coders git repositories at:

git://github.com/lostcoder/pan2.git

I wonder if there is any chance of this version being turned into
a .deb and placed in the *buntu repositories?

System Freezes With gnome-screensaver-preferences [SOLVED]

Further googling with another set of words led me to some information
that was helpful, like this:

Call up gconf-editor from a terminal. Once there, go to apps ->
gnome-screensaver and you can change the settings.

There were a couple of screensavers that still didn't respond, but I
realised that I'd installed them after the main body of screensavers
through Synaptic, so I just deleted them via Synaptic.

I don't know if this is any good to anyone, but there it is.

System Freezes With gnome-screensaver-preferences

Whenever I call up gnome-screensaver-preferences, the whole system
freezes/locks up. The only way I can get anything back is to reboot.

I can run it from the live CD but there doesn't appear to be any way of
saving settings to correct this problem.

Does anyone know how to turn the screensaver off by using the terminal?

I assume there's some sort of conflict which causing everything (mouse
pointer, keyboard, etc.) to freeze so where do I start looking?

Bluetooth In Gnome

I've just been setting up bluetooth in Ubuntu and have noticed there
are two packages:gnome-bluetooth and bluez-gnome.

As these are incompatible with each other (at least on my system
running Ubuntu 9.10), could somebody tell me what extra benefits each
package holds other than just connecting to bluetooth devices?

In short, I want to know which is best for me! Can anyone help?

Problem With Scanner

I have a Packard Bell Diamond 1200 Plus scanner, and I'm having
problems with it scanning through XSane, Quiteinsane, and the Gnome
scanner utility.

How Do I Backup A DVd To A Different Region?

I have a DVD in Region 1 format and I want to backup the copy I've got
to Region 2, or better still Region 0. The DVD holds important
information which I'd like to use (with clips, possibly) in a research
project.

I've got libdvdcss2 installed, and this gives me playback in Region 2
format *on my desktop* but I'd like to record it to DVD (with
compression if need be to fit).

Problems With Privoxy On Reboot/Start in Karmic

I raised this problem before and I had a great deal of help, but I've
found it recurring with a number of machines on which I reinstalled
Ubuntu with Ubuntu Karmic.

Briefly, this is the issue. When installing Privoxy from the repos
(haven't tried the tarball yet), and then starting it with:

sudo /etc/init.d/privoxy start

Privoxy works. However, when I restart or reboot a system running
Karmic, Privoxy needs to be restarted before I can connect.

Previous versions of Ubuntu didn't have this problem.

Privoxy Problem Under Karmic

Under previous editions of Ubuntu (as far as I can remember!) once
privoxy was installed, settings were kept and on reboot the settings
were active, and privoxy burst into life.

However, privoxy doesn't do this under Karmic and I have to enter:

sudo /usr/sbin/privoxy

at the start of each session after reboot, or I will not be able to
connect. Has there been a change in Karmic to warrant a bug
notification?

Or is there a simple line to add to a config file somewhere that will
automate this process (ie.

Ubuntu and SB51 G2 Shuttle

Are there any known issues with this configuration?

I'm thinking of installing Ubuntu Karmic on a very inexpensive Shuttle
my wife has bought me, but would install Jaunty if there are known
problems, or Debian Lenny (I prefer Debian based OS).

So, does anyone know of issues with Ubuntu Karmic and a SB51 G2 Shuttle?

[PARTLY SOLVED]: Problem In Installing Jaunty and Karmic

With excellent help from one member of the list, I now have this solved
for Jaunty by adding:

noapic

to the kernel line in /boot/grub/menu.lst.

However, I understand that this doesn't hold true for Karmic. If I
have not been misinformed, could anyone explain how I pass this option
to the kernel at boot time in Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic)?

Problem In Installing Jaunty and Karmic

This problem occured when I tried to install Ubuntu (and Xubuntu) on my
aged laptop (a HI-GRADE Model 332).

When I try to load in the live cd it gives this message:

[ 0.152001] ..MP-BIOS bug: 8254 timer not connected to IO-APIC
[ 0.168001] Kernel panic - not syncing: IO-APIC + timer doesn't work!
Boot with apic=debug and send a report. Then try booting with the
'noapic' option.

Send apic=debug report to whom?

I can boot with the 'noapic' option from the livecd, and it loads fine,
but when I then try to install Ubuntu, I get the same message.

Could you refrain from adding such statements - or at least make the

Its the same with your definition of a patriot quoted earlier in your

Ubuntu On An XBox (NOT XBox 360)

I've recently been given an old XBox console when my main PC may be
going down the shoot, so it makes sense to see if I can use it as an
interim measure before I get a new PC to run a variant of Ubuntu
(probably Xubuntu).

I've done some Googling around and, indeed, it looks as though you can
run Xubuntu on an XBox, though most of the information goes back to
2006 so I'd like some information from other (X)Ubuntu users.

I've thought about using it as a home media set up, but then is Xubuntu
the best Linux distro to try?

Best Application For Copying VHS Tapes To DVD?

Have any list members got a recommendation as to which application to
use to copy VHS tapes to DVD?

The proposed set up is as follows:

1. As I'm in the UK, the VHS tapes would be PAL (I don't know if this
makes any difference)

2. The output stream from the VHS player is connected to the "arial
out" connector to the arial socket on the television card. There is no
scart connector on the TV card; the only common connection is the arial
connector.

Problems Installing Ubuntu and Its Derivatives

I have been trying to install Ubuntu, Kubuntu, or Xbuntu, and one or two
unofficial distros based on Ubuntu such as OpenGEU and gOS on my
laptop. The versions that I'm trying to install in the official
versions are 8.10 and 9.04, and I've got the Shipit cds as well as
self-burn ones and the 'alternative' cds. I'm getting an error message
will *every* cd from the official versions, and the 'alternative' cds
too, as follows:

[0.132001] ..MP-BIOS bug: 8254 timer not connected to IO-APIC
[0.142001] Kernel panic - not syncing:IO:APIC & timer doesn't work!

Options Bug In Jaunty?

I have been using a self-burnt disk to attempt to install Jaunty on my
laptop (a Hi-Grade Model Number 332) and it has been throwing up some
unusual error messages.

Here are the messages:

[ 0.128001]..MP-BIOS bug: 8254 timer not connected to IO-APIC
[ 0.144001] Kernel panic - not syncing: IO-APIC + timer doesn't
work! Boot with apic=debug and send a report.

Good for them!

Pity this list hasn't reflected more of the Debian philosophy (or
should that read "more of the Gnu/Linux philosophy") as Ubuntu is
forked from Debian.

Alright, alright, any replies will be answered in Sounder.....

Jaunty Boot-up Problem

I have a similar problem to those with a shutdown problem, although my
install was from a disk burnt on my home machine from the Desktop .iso
file. A short time afterwards, here in the UK, my regular DVD with
"Linux Format" magazine arrived and I reinstalled from that disk - with
the same result.

Packard Bell Diamond 1200 Plus Scanner Under Jaunty

This information may be of help to someone else, so I thought I'd raise
it here.

This scanner is a slim flatbed type that would fit in a large laptop
bag, particularly as its not heavy either.. Its powered by a usb cable
only, that stores away when its being carried. I use it at university
to cut down on photocopy charges, and as its a full A4 sized unit, its
certainly worth having if you don't have an All-In-One. However, under
Jaunty, you may need to need to jump through a few hoops to get it
going.

As far as I am aware, Ubuntu is fully standards compliant, and uses the
SIP protocol correctly. Applications such as OpenOffice, Abiword,
Koffice, etc. use the Open Document Format correctly and this is the
only document format recognised by the International Standards
Organisation (ISO) as a standard AFAIK (though ageing brain cells might
be incorrect here!).

Visually Impaired List Members

I have deliberately started a new thread with Lorenzo's quote ( old
thread was Re: Inappropriate tone on this mailing list and requirement

is germane to this list.

It seems that Lorenzo (and perhaps other visually impaired list
members) experience difficulties when those of us not so impaired, post
to this list and perhaps other lists. The preference for most of us -
and the preference encouraged - is that we bottom post as I am doing
here.

Weird Behaviour In Top Panel in Jaunty

A couple of keys jumped off my USB keyboard so I changed over to a PS/2
keyboard (the only other one I had available).

After that each window scrolled upwards very fast and when I clicked on
the bluetooth icon, it filled up the panel and beyond. When I try to
click on the menu lists (Message, Places, System), I get the popup for
the bluetooth application and it wont let me gain access to the menu
lists.

I've rebooted to no avail, and even reinstalled with no effect.

Is There A System-Wide Proxy Setting in Jaunty?

I had a system-wide application in Intrepid which used to set my
Privoxy settings for Epiphany (my browser of choice).

Since there is no way of setting a proxy from inside Epiphany (at least
that I know of) I used to set system wide settings under Intrepid.
However, I can't find an app that does this in Jaunty and the old one
has been deleted.

Can someone help me? And if this is not the correct place to ask, I
apologise.
