Change tracking problem with OpenOffice--options settings don't persist

I am running Fedora 12 x86_64, but this problem goes back to earlier
versions. (In fact, I think I recall some discussion of it on the list
a year or so ago, but I couldn't find that when I searched so maybe I'm
imagining it.)

I have some colleagues who prefer to use Word (even to edit LaTeX source
files!), partly because change tracking sometimes makes it a lot easier to
keep up with what's happening to multi-author manuscripts. So I need to
use OpenOffice's change tracking and I set Tools -> Options -> Writer
-> Changes to color the changes "by author".

problem with latest texlive 2009 rpms from Jindrich Novy

I'm trying this version of texlive 2009 under Fedora 11. I just updated
(now at texlive-2009-1.20091107.fc11.x86_64), and pdflatex is producing A4
pages instead of letter ones. I reran both texconfig and texconfig-sys
and set the paper size to letter, but it doesn't seem to be taking effect.
Until today's update, I was getting letter paper. (This is an update
*after* the one that removed /usr/share/texlive.)

/usr/share/texlive/texmf-config/tex/generic/config/pdftexconfig.tex correctly says

% Set pdfTeX parameters for pdf mode (replacing pdftex.cfg file).
% Thomas Esser, 2004.

kde 4.3 pager

I'm sure this is pilot error of some sort, but I can't figure it out.

I'm running F11, x86_64, fully updated. I use 12 desktops. Until I did
the update that brought in KDE 4.3, I had a nice pager widget (not on the
panel) with 4 rows and 3 columns, the small images of the desktops
filled the widget, and I could adjust the size. With 4.3, KDE seems to
insist on a particular shape for the pager--the 12 desktops in this 4x3
configuration take up about half of it and it is not in the same aspect
ratio as my display. Also, there's a minimum size it won't let me go
below.
