I have tethering enabled on my iPhone 3GS and it works fine with MacOS and
WinXP, both of which required virtually no setup. Has anyone done this
recently on Fedora 12?
Either USB or Bluetooth connections to the phone would suit.
TIA

I know ipv6 is going to be in all our futures, but for the moment it's
just a PITA. My ISP doesn't support it and my /var/log/messages is
overflowing with complaints from named (I run the basic caching
nameserver configuration).
There's lots of variegated advice around on turning off ipv6, much of it
out of date. What's the canonical way of doing this in Fedora (12), or
at least getting named to shut up about it?

Can anyone explain why this doesn't work? I've been writing shell
scripts on and off for several decades and I can't see what's going on
here. Is senility setting it?

I've had several of these is the past few days. They all seem related
to /sys/devices/platform/coretemp.1/temp1_input, but my machine isn't
running particularly hot (at least according to ksensors).

The X server traditionally ran on console vt7, till a while back someone
decided to move it to vt1. Now that I'm used to that, they've moved it
back to vt7 again. What's going on?

I'm just filing my 3rd or 4th abrt report in as many days (for different
apps), and every time the tool downloads a whole bunch of debuginfo
packages so it can resolve symbols in coredumps. This makes perfect
sense, except that the people who will eventually look at the bug report
have just as much access to debuginfo packages as I do, and probably a
heck of a lot more bandwidth.
Given that abrt is designed to make bug-reporting easier for the average
user, I suspect a lot of b/w is being consumed by these downloads that
would not otherwise be the case.
F12 x86_64, updated. I'm using Google Chrome as my default browser, but
its only in 32-bit and Java (java-1.6.0-openjdk) doesn't work, in the
sense that Java elements on a page are simply blank and about:plugins
shows nothing for Java.
I installed bind and tried to use it as a basic cacheing nameserver,
which in principal just means running named and
pointing /etc/resolv.conf to 127.0.0.1. However resolv.conf keeps
getting overwritten by NetworkManager, and I notice an excessive number
of "Resolving foo ..." messages from Firefox and Chrome, i.e. no
cacheing is being done as far as I can tell. Note that I didn't touch
named.conf or any other config files.
How does one convince NM not to interfere with resolv.conf? (Please
don't tell me to uninstall NM, that's not going to happen).

I use a Logitech V470 BT mouse with my EeePC 1000. On F11 everything
Just Worked, but on F12 I have to manually pair the mouse (using "sudo
hidd --server-search") and even then it regularly disconnects.
I'm experiencing considerable frustration trying to get Real Audio files
to play. I dl'ed the x686 binary from real.com on my netbook and tried
the "realplay" command on a .ram file, but just I get this:
ALSA lib pcm_dmix.c:1010:(snd_pcm_dmix_open) unable to open slave
despite the fact that PA seems to be working (i.e. the tests work, Flash
audio works etc.).
What do people use to listen to Real Audio?

Since I updated to kernel-2.6.31.6-162.fc12.i686 on my EeePC 1000
netbook, Wifi has become so unreliable as to be virtually unusable. Lost
connections, dropped frames even when pinging the local AP, endless
browswer waits while "Resolving host ...". The same AP supports 1 iMac,
a Mac Mini, 3 laptops and about 6 iPhones, all with no problems, but I
reset it anyway just in case, to no effect. I've spent a couple of days
fraking around with NM before deciding to try rolling back to
kernel-2.6.31.6-145.fc12.i686, which immediately solved all the
problems.
The chipset is an AR928x.
I've been using the Chromium browser under F12 on my netbook for several
days, and generally like it a lot (especially on the small screen). It's
fast and doesn't eat RAM like Firefox.
*But* Java sites don't work. This is a known bug with Linux versions of
Chrome/Chromium but I wondered if anyone out there had managed to get it
to work. I'm using IcedTea. Would it make a difference with Sun Java?

My name is Patrick and I'm a crossword puzzle addict.
The NYT publishes its puzzles in Across Lite format, and there's a
proprietary app (acrossl) which runs on Linux. Unfortunately it's
getting really old and is binary-only. It worked under F11 but now the
app gets a segfault on my netbook (though oddly it works fine on my
64-bit desktop, also on F12).
Since I'm on the road for 2 months I'm starting to get withdrawal
symptoms :-) F12 32-bit code is now compiled for the i686 and both the
app and the old compat libraries are i386 (not all of them have been
updated for F12).
I'm attempting to report a bug but suddenly BZ won't let me in. It
claims my password's expired but won't allow me to reset it. There
doesn't appear to be any way of setting a new password without entering
the old one, and though I am certain I remember the old pw (and Firefox
agrees with me) the page won't recognize it.
In fact I can't even get to the public pages on the server. Every
attempt just brings up the "reset your password" page.
Later:
I removed all bugzilla.redhat.com cookies from FF and tried again.
Anyone know how to accomplish this under KDE? The "Clock uses UTC" box
doesn't seem to exist in the KDE universe (under System Settings->Date
and Time.)

I just installed kernel-2.6.30.5-32.fc11.x86_64 from updates-testing and
find that my favourite 3D app (foobillard) is working again, i.e. the X
server no longer freezes requiring a reboot. This is with Intel 965
video. I don't know how it affects people using window manager effects,
but they might like to try it.
Colour me delighted :-)

On rebooting my F11 desktop machine (wired Ethernet) this morning I got
the following messages, apparently from the NM daemon:
ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): eth0: link is not ready
e1000e: eth0: NIC Link is Up 100Mbps Full Duplex, Flow Control: RX/TX
0000:00:19.0: eth0 10/100 speed: disabling TSO
ADDRCONF(NETDEV_CHANGE): eth0: link becomes ready
after which the boot simply hangs forever.
I'm trying to get a stack trace of a reproducible X server crasher
(briefly, it appears to be related to DRM as it only happens when
running the foobillard billards simulation game). However I can't get
the debuginfo for the server:
Could not find debuginfo for main pkg: xorg-x11-server-Xorg-1.6.1.901-2.fc11.x86_64
Any thoughts?
poc
PS If anyone else has info on this crasher, kindly speak up.
I notice that some lines in the output of "yum list installed" are
highlighted in red. There doesn't seem to be any mention of this in the
manual. Does anyone know what it means?
Highlighting is useful as a visual clue, but if the info is meaningful
it should also be indicated in such a way that a filter could use it.

Trying to install qbittorrent under F11 x86_64, I got depsolving
problems. I previously had QBT working under F10, but for some reason it
didn't update when I moved to F11. I completely removed the F10 version,
disabled the special-purpose qbittorrent repo (since it's now in Fedora
updates), cleaned metadata, and tried again.
After installing F10 on my netbook I decided to reorganize the
partitions to gain space for Fedora and reduce that available to
Windows. I booted the Live CD (actually a Live USB pendrive) and used
yum to install gparted on the running system.
However gparted won't let me move the extended hd partition where I
installed Fedora.
My Asus 1000HE netbook with F10 seems to work well, including suspend
and resume, but the Wifi will *sometimes* (results seem to vary) refuse
reconnect after the latter. No amount of fiddling with NM will persuade
it. It shows the connection as down and there appears to be no way to
make it reconnect, obliging me to reboot. On my desktop, a simple
left-click on the NM applet resets the (wired) connection, but it
doesn't work on the netbook.
Hints welcome.

I have a Logitech Bluetooth mouse with my Asus 1000HE netbook. In
general it works very well (even the sideways scrolling feature) but I
find I have to run "hidd --search" as root in order to get it to
connect.
I use KDE4 so I installed kbluetooth4 and at first was pleasantly
suprised when it handled the connection right out of the box. However
it's never done it again, despite me clicking on every possible option,
permanently authorizing the mouse MAC address, pressing the 'Connect'
button on the mouse, etc.
I've just acquired one of the above beasties. The thing comes with XP,
so I'm interested in installing a dual-boot system with Fedora. AFAIK
the 900 and 901 models are known to work, but the 1000HE is fairly new.
I wondered if people who've already done this can warn me of potential
pitfalls.
All advice gratefully accepted.

Why? What purpose would this serve?
Furthermore, you're not going to get a sympathetic hearing if you reply
to a Digest message without even bothering to change the Subject line.
Quoting the entire digest in your message is merely further evidence of
cluelessness.
