A Plethora of problems with Karmic 9.10 upgrade

Dear Friends,
I must confess utter dismay and despondency at the slew of trials and
tribulations visited upon my hapless head brought about by the innocent
action of updating my system. The woes are as follows:

1) My login screen has become erratic - it sometimes appears and at
times I have to use 'startx' at the prompt. This is despite numerous
attempts to install Grub2 and update relevant files according to the
instructions gleaned here as well as on the net.

2) When I use the startx command...I have no sound and no printing
facilities at all.

Login screen disappeared - karmic

Hey guys,
thnaks for your help, I googled super grub for USb and then followed the
instructions. My system has been restored and is working fine.
A million thanks to all of you who bothered to offer assistance.
Cheers

Login screen disappeared - karmic

Hi guys,
I desperately need your help. I've lost my log in screen and cant boot
into my gui. This has happened immediately after I installed Bit
Defender and rebooted.
I dont get any GRUB screen or restore options...all that happens is
the boot sequence seems to proceed with the ubuntu logo onscreen and
then goes blank and shows my terminal command line i.e.

I'd be fascinated by your insights into Borland, Pascal, C++ Linux etc.
and I'm sure many others would be too. Why don't you start a new
'reminisce' thread to regale us with your tales of the days of yore?

me.

Threading is not done by Subject line - it's usually done by a
References: line in the header of the post. GMail gets this totally
wrong and uses the Subject, which is dire, frankly.

For example,
References:
<1265653043.7275.5.camel at aitch-laptop> <4B70B9C8.<...> at bradbury dot edu.hk>
<01693fec70c4c48a0171e184b4424f0c.<...> at amedee dot be>

Each time you start a new mail, even if you copy the Subject line into
that message, you're starting a new thread.

Re: basic - continued

Yet another thread..

Rafiq, please use your Gmail account with thunderbird 3. :-D

I don't understand this...I usually copy the same subject matter so as
not to start new threads - I'm using Evolution and it works fine for me.
Am I missing some esoteric setting here?

I'm still trying to set up file sharing and haven't got anywhere yet.

You might post back and tell what you have done so far and what did not
work.

Re: basic - continued

Not Linus. Gnu/Linux was, if I understand correctly, started by Richard
Stallman in the early 1980's.

Tero Pesonen

Is that really true? I always thought that Linus Torvald was the
originator of Linux, a term which comprised an amalgamation of his name
and Unix (which is still used by the banks as the most secure OS on the
planet).
Am I totally off track?

Useless. No scan on read/write. It is just a scanner.

Hmm...me wonders how it compares to clamav

Dear Patton,
I did not see the printer links in the original thread....would it be a

lack

You have it the wrong way around. Backwards compatibility would mean the
latest MS office can open older word formats, which it can. What you are
calling wrongly backwards compatibility is actually forwards
compatibility, or future proofing - Asking that a 6 year old application
can open a format only released in recent years. Not the same thing.

Yeah, a 6 year old application isn't as good as an up to date one. No
surprise there ...

I concede the point - perhaps I have allowed my anti MS prejudices to
taint my suppositions.

Re: basic - continued

levels

Sorry, I'm no windows fan but this is a silly comparison. Word 2003 was
released *before* docx came out, so it is completely unfair to compare
it to presumably the latest version of the OO Word processor, which has
had time to learn the docx format... Come on.

Chris

Actually it's not so silly because I was attempted to emphasise the lack
of backward compatibility that Microsoft seems to delight in.

my profuse gratitude for your assistance...I will implement your

Re: basic - continued

I have found the following main differences between Windows & Linux.
Please note that this is strictly a layman's point of view:

1) Windows is very unstable compared to Linux (i.e. more periodic
crashes);
2) Windows is much more prone to viruses and constantly needs updated
antivirus protection, whilst LINUX does not;
3) Windows is more resource (memory, RAM etc) greedy and demands higher
specs to run efficiently. Linux, on the other hand, is much faster and
has a far more efficient file hierarchical system;
4) Windows XP costs approx $100 and MS Office Pro costs approx.

Re: basic - continued

The debate concerning Linux vs Windows seems to rear it's head fairly
frequently on this forum and I would like to contribute my newly
acquired perspective - if I may.

Having started with Windows 3.0 right up to Vista - and being of a
curious mind I can vouch for the interminable hassles that windows poses
- we have all confronted the blue screen of death with a sinking
feeling in the pit of the stomach.

The market dominance of the OS has made it a prime target for every
hacker who wishes to stake a claim to fame.

How to set up a VPN on Karmic to XP

Hi everyone,
my offices have a wireless network set up for internet access through a
router. I wonder whether it would be possible to use this as a conduit
for a network linking various PC's (some running XP and other running
Ubuntu)to each other for file sharing and printing.
I have never set up a VPN or anything like it before, so simplicity and
your patience would be dearly appreciated.

Re: Restoring desktop in Karmic

Hi,

Probably. But you've so many separate threads regarding this subject
that folks (certainly me) are reluctant to try and answer.
Spend time answering this thread, only to find out that perhaps it's
been answered/solved in another:

- Lost windows manager on karmic
- Fixes needed for Windows manager crashes on Karmic
- Fixes needed for Windows manager crashes on Karmic (2nd thread same
subject)
- Restoring desktop in Karmic

Sorry about the duplications - it could be taken as a sign of my
desperation.

Restoring desktop in Karmic

Dear Spaceghost
you replied:
As per your window manager, is this a recurring issue?
for a simple one-time fix you can run this
metacity --replace 2>&1
or for compiz
compiz --replace 2>&1
or emerald
emerald --replace 2>&1

Nope, it's just happened once - after upgrdaing to Karmic from Hardy
and I haven't managed to recover yet.
I'll try this and revert in due course. But thanks for the assistance.

Samsung CLX2160 multi function laser printer - scanner not recognised in karmic

Hi, my Samsung CLX 2160 multifunnction colour laser printer works fine
as a printer but is not recognised as a scanner bothn by Hardy as well
as Karmic. I've installed the proper drivers from Samsung but they
seem limited to printing only - insights needed please?

Restoring desktop in Karmic

Hi,
pursuant to my earlier posting, I'vr (unsuccessfully) grappled with my
desktop suddenly becoming non responsive and my inability to
maximise/minimise programs, or to open multiple files in separate
d/tops etc. Can anyone please guide me towards restoring my desktop
and (hopefully) my windows manager without radical surgery?
Thanks

Fixes needed for Windows manager crashes on Karmic

Hi all.
my newly installed karmic was such a joy to use...until it
mysteriously started misbehaving and would not allow me to
maximixe/minimise windows or move them around or show different
desktops, even the show desktop icon became unresponsive aside from
telling me that there's no window manager installed.

Lost windows manager on karmic

I've somehow managed to lose my windows manager after upgrading to
Karmic and have no idea on how to get my desktop working properly again.
I've tried installing complz fusion via apt-get but it hasn't solved the
problem.
Your assistance would be, as always, fervently appreciated.

Re: Weeding out Duplicate files in Hardy Heron 8.04

If your files are in a directory /home/dir/mm, you can try the
following:

find /home/dir/mm -type f -print0 | xargs -0 md5sum > /tmp/files

(all has to be typed on a single line) and then

sort /tmp/files | uniq -w 32 -D > /tmp/dupes

(all has to be typed on a single line). In /tmp/dupes you have
the list of duplicate files preprended with its md5 sum. You
can look at the list using

less /tmp/dupes

(type q to quit). If the duplicate list is not too big, you can
remove all but one of each "duplicate" (that way you can also
visually check if these are names of real duplicate).

Chrome in Karmic facilitates access to irksome sites

My daughter has just installed Chrome in her netbook and finds no
problem in accessing facebook and other such sites. This may be a way
around the java issue. Only glitch is that she's got an amd machine, and
I cannot find Chrome for Karmic on intel processor.

Constant CD Nag during pkg installation in Karmic

Hi,
I'm being pestered for the CD every time I try to install anything. This
didn't happen in Hardy. Is there a work around? Maybe I can mount the
image and dupe the system into thinking that it's a CD (like using
Alcohol in windows)?
Thanks
